How to Lay Out a Perfect Ellipse

Mark perpendicular axes, calculate the foci, and trace with taut nonstretch string for a practical full-size ellipse. A trammel offers a rigid alternative.

For a full-size ellipse, mark its center and perpendicular axes, calculate the two foci, then trace with a nonstretch string held taut between them. The string method follows the ellipse’s defining rule: the sum of the distances from any point on the curve to the two foci remains constant. A trammel is a useful alternative when a rigid guide is easier to control.

Choose a layout method

Method Best use Main control Limitation
String and two pins or stakes Quick layouts from a small drawing to a garden or building site Nonstretch cord, secure anchors and steady tension Slack, stretch, moving anchors or uneven tension can distort the curve.
Trammel or trammel stick Workshop work, architectural curves or situations where a rigid guide is more convenient Correctly positioned guide points and smooth movement The bar must reach the required scale; setup and clearance can be awkward.
Compass-and-straightedge focus construction Locating foci or laying out a smaller ellipse by points Accurate axes and repeated arcs It produces points to join rather than a continuous trace.

The Smithsonian Institution describes the string-and-pin construction and notes that “the curve that results is an ellipse” (Smithsonian Institution, “Ellipsographs”). The constant-distance-sum rule is also explained by Math Open Reference.

Calculate the foci from the finished dimensions

Use the ellipse’s semi-axes: a is half the full length along the long axis, and b is half the full width along the short axis. The distance from the center to either focus is c = √(a² − b²). The foci lie on the major axis, one on each side of the center. In the classic string construction, the tied loop’s working length is 2a, equal to the full major-axis length.

For example, Fine Homebuilding’s worked construction uses a 17-inch run and 12-inch rise as semi-axis dimensions. The focus offset is √(17² − 12²) = √145, or about 12.04 inches; the major-axis length is 34 inches. Its stated string formula is 2 × (focus offset + run), about 58.08 inches. These are calculations for that example, not universal dimensions; recalculate using your project’s semi-axes (Fine Homebuilding, “Three Ways to Lay Out an Elliptical Curve”).

If a and b are equal, c is zero: both foci coincide at the center and the shape is a circle.

Lay out the ellipse with string and anchors

Gather the materials

  • Nonstretch string or cord suited to the scale of the work
  • Two pins for paper or sheet goods, or sturdy stakes for a ground layout
  • A pencil or other marking tool
  • A measuring tape, straightedge and square for setting out the center, axes and dimensions

Mark the center, axes and foci

  1. Mark the center of the intended ellipse. Draw the major and minor axes through it at right angles.
  2. Mark the endpoints of both axes from the required overall dimensions: the major axis is 2a and the minor axis is 2b.
  3. Measure c from the center in both directions along the major axis. Mark the two foci there and secure a pin or stake at each mark.

Set and check the string

  1. Tie or secure nonstretch string between the anchors so its effective working length preserves the 2a sum of the two pencil-to-focus segments. Account for cord taken up around pins or by the way the cord is secured; the physical cord length is not necessarily the same as the working length.
  2. Before drawing, place the marking point at a major-axis endpoint and check that the string can be held taut there without shifting an anchor. Adjust the setup if it cannot.

Trace and verify

  1. Position the pencil inside the string, pull the cord taut and move around the curve while keeping tension and tool angle steady.
  2. Check the traced line against the marked axis endpoints and inspect it for symmetry before cutting or building from it.

For a large ground layout, use anchors and a marking tool that remain stable and visible at the site. For paper or sheet goods, pins and a pencil are generally adequate. The Smithsonian’s description of the pin-and-string approach is available at its Ellipsographs page; Math Open Reference shows a gardener’s ellipse construction at How to construct (draw) an ellipse.

Use a trammel when a rigid guide is preferable

A trammel stick transfers the ellipse’s geometry mechanically. Mark the semi-major and semi-minor dimensions on a strip or stick, then move it so the marks remain on the perpendicular axes while a pencil at the appropriate point traces the curve. It is a practical option for full-scale architectural work when string tension is inconvenient; Fine Homebuilding also describes using a simple trammel jig for a quarter-elliptical arch (Fine Homebuilding, “How to Lay Out an Elliptical Arch With a Simple Trammel Jig”). A quarter-ellipse jig lays out only the needed arc; it does not change the underlying curve. A section on trammel and two-focus constructions also appears in Manual of Engineering Drawing (hosted PDF copy).

What affects layout accuracy

“Perfect” means following the intended mathematical ellipse, not guaranteeing machining accuracy. The layout depends on the axes being square, dimensions being measured from the same center, anchors remaining fixed, cord not stretching and tension staying taut. A misplaced focus, slack string or shifting stake changes the curve. For work that needs tighter tolerances than hand layout can support, use a measured point table or an appropriate CAD/template process; the sources cited here do not quantify hand-layout tolerances.
