The manufacturer publishes separate instructions for backup, primary, combination, alarm and accessory products, including older models; a reset or repair step for one controller may not apply to another. Find the model in the Basement Watchdog resource library before changing settings or wiring.
Identify your model and controller first
Check the pump label and controller panel, then match the model name to its manual and revision. For example, the 2025 BWE guide and 2023 BWSP guide cover different systems and should not be treated as interchangeable. The manufacturer’s resource library includes guides for current and retired models.
Before troubleshooting, note the active indicator or alarm, whether the primary AC pump is running, whether the backup pump has activated, and whether water is leaving the pit. Keep the model number and controller details handy if you contact support. The Special CONNECT guide cautions: “Read safety warnings & instructions before attempting any repairs or maintenance.”

Power alarm or no power
On the BWE, the controller has separate Power, Pump, System and Battery indicators. For a power alarm, the manufacturer advises checking household power, the breaker or fuse, the charger connection, whether the outlet works, and the GFCI status. Use the BWE manual for that controller’s exact alarm and reset instructions rather than applying them to another generation.

- System comes preassembled and preplumbed so that installation is simple and quick
- Reliable design with durable ½ HP energy efficient copper-wound Permanent Split Capacitor (PSC) motor for long life and savings on your electric bills
- Includes a WiFi-capable battery backup system that provides 24-hour-a-day monitoring of pump, power and battery conditions; backup controller will sound an alarm, illuminate a warning light and describe what to do for easy maintenance
- Allows for connection to a Basement Watchdog CONNECT Module (BW-WiFi2—a SEPARATE PURCHASE), giving you real-time alerts via text, email, push notification or through the Basement Watchdog free app
- Provides days of intermittent pumping power on a single battery charge and is compatible with both maintenance-free AGM and wet-cell batteries. Connect two batteries in parallel for double the runtime.
A backup pump can operate normally during a utility outage. When power returns, restore the monitoring controls as the matched guide directs. Do not silence or reset an alarm until you have identified its cause. The BWE instructions state that its Battery alarm cannot be silenced and needs attention; do not assume that behavior applies to a different model.
Battery alarm
The 2023 BWSP guide identifies corroded terminals, loose cables, a battery discharged below 25%, and an old or damaged battery as possible causes. Depending on the cause, it recommends cleaning terminals and cables, tightening cable bolts, or replacing a low, old or damaged battery. Follow the BWSP troubleshooting guide for the specific procedure.
Basement Watchdog’s FAQ says a new battery may take about 24 hours to reach full charge and advises contacting service if the battery light remains on after that period. The FAQ also says current maintenance-free batteries work with current backup systems, but some systems made before 2014 may not be compatible; a mismatch can cause a false alarm. Confirm compatibility for your exact model before buying or installing a replacement.

- Emergency battery backup sump pump system includes 24/7 monitoring controller with lights and alarms
For compatible current systems, the manufacturer recommends its BW-27AGM maintenance-free AGM standby battery. The BW-27AGM product page says the BWE is designed to work best with that battery. Treat it as a possible replacement only after checking your system’s compatibility and confirming the existing battery is the problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBackup pump activated or pump alarm
A backup activation is a warning to investigate the system, not proof that the backup pump has failed. The BWSP guide lists these possible causes:
- A power outage or failure of the primary AC pump.
- A stuck or defective primary float switch, or a broken primary pump.
- Water inflow that exceeds the primary pump’s capacity.
- A stuck or improperly installed check valve.
- A clogged or frozen discharge pipe.
- A small chance of false activation if the float-switch cord is wrapped around the AC power cord.
The BWE guidance likewise says to check the main AC pump, its float, the check valve and the discharge pipe. Find out whether the primary pump is working and why water is rising; the backup may be responding as intended. Use the instructions for your model in the official guide library.

My pump won’t stop running
For the dual-float backup system covered by Basement Watchdog’s 2024 continuous-running FAQ, check that the float switch is mounted properly: the round floats should hang below the metal bracket, and the bracket should be straight. When a float activates the pump, a timer runs it for about 25–60 seconds to empty the pit. The FAQ says the pump will not be damaged merely because it continues running after the water has been discharged.
If the pump keeps cycling, look for recurring water inflow and check whether the primary pump is handling it. Consult the continuous-running FAQ and the manual for your model; its float arrangement and timer instructions should not be generalized to every Basement Watchdog system.
Water won’t exit the pit
For the BWSP system, the troubleshooting guide lists a missing, broken or improperly installed check valve; a clogged or frozen discharge pipe; a float switch disconnected from the controller; and an air lock as possible causes. It also directs owners to check that the 3/16-inch weep hole is present and clear for that installation. This is model-specific piping guidance: verify the correct manual before modifying the discharge plumbing.

- Pumps 2,500 GPH at 0 ft. of lift and 1,730 GPH at 10 ft. of lift
- User-friendly control panel lights up with a warning and describes what to do for easy maintenance
- A sensor monitors battery fluid levels for increased piece of mind
- Includes controller, charger, dual float switch, pump and battery box (battery sold separately)
- Compact pump can be installed even in small or narrow sump pits
If the BWSP backup pump is clogged, the guide says to remove the strainer and clear debris. If it identifies a broken pump, it lists replacement. Follow the guide’s disconnect/reconnect and reset procedure only when its specified remedies have not resolved the issue. If the problem persists, stop and contact customer service rather than improvising electrical or battery work.
My pump won’t turn on
First distinguish a primary-pump no-start from a backup-pump no-start, and note any controller alarm or indicator. For a BWE power alarm, check the outlet, breaker or fuse, charger connection and GFCI as described above. For other models, use the matched manual: the manufacturer’s support form treats “My pump won’t turn on” as a separate issue, but the available guidance does not establish one universal reset or repair procedure for every controller.

Contact the manufacturer if the matching guide does not resolve the fault, an alarm persists after its prescribed checks, or the needed repair involves work beyond the manual. Call 800-991-0466; the BWSP guide specifies option 3. The contact form accepts requests for alarm troubleshooting, water not exiting the pit, a pump that will not stop or start, Wi-Fi problems, parts and repair. Have the model number, controller panel details and active indicator ready.

Runtime figures are estimates, not guarantees
Basement Watchdog lists runtime figures for several systems in its FAQ. The manufacturer says these estimates are based on a 10% duty cycle and may vary with water inflow, so they do not predict how long a particular basement will remain protected during an outage.
| System named by Basement Watchdog | Published runtime estimate | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Big Dog CONNECT | 40 hours | Manufacturer estimate; based on a 10% duty cycle and variable with water inflow. |
| Special CONNECT | 48 hours | Manufacturer estimate; based on a 10% duty cycle and variable with water inflow. |
| Emergency | 80 hours | Manufacturer estimate; based on a 10% duty cycle and variable with water inflow. |
The FAQ page does not state a publication year for these runtime figures. Its estimates are not a guarantee for a specific installation or outage.
