A carved pumpkin usually lasts only a day to a week, depending on weather and its starting condition. To keep yours presentable through Halloween, begin with a sound pumpkin, carve as late as practical, clean it thoroughly, treat exposed surfaces carefully, slow moisture loss, and protect it from heat, sun and freezing temperatures.
1. Choose a mature, undamaged pumpkin
Start with the best material. Reject pumpkins with soft spots, bruises, cuts, punctures or leaking areas. Choose one with a hard rind, solid color and, where practical, some stem still attached. Kansas State University Research and Extension notes that pumpkins harvested before full ripeness rot more quickly.
Check the base and the area around the stem before buying; hidden damage can become the first place mold develops.
2. Carve as close to display time as possible
Carving exposes moist interior tissue to air, insects and microorganisms. Kansas State estimates that noticeable rot can begin after only a few days up to a week, while University of Arkansas Extension gives a weather-dependent range of a day to a week. Warm, humid conditions can shorten that window substantially.

If you live in a warm climate, Oklahoma State University Extension recommends postponing carving until a few days before Halloween. Plan the carving date backward from the evening you need the pumpkin to look its best.
3. Clean the pumpkin, tools and cavity thoroughly
Wash soil from the outside before cutting. Use clean carving tools, and clean or sterilize them between pumpkins if you are preparing more than one. Remove all seeds, stringy pulp and loose fibers from the cavity; leftover organic material provides additional surfaces where decay organisms can grow.

For safer cutting, use a purpose-made pumpkin carving kit or sturdy tools designed for the job, keep the pumpkin on a stable surface, and cut away from your hands and body.
4. Consider a dilute disinfecting rinse
South Dakota State University, Utah State University and Kansas State Extension describe treating exposed surfaces with a dilute bleach-water solution; Oklahoma State also mentions a mild bleach-water or vinegar-water rinse. These are extension recommendations, not proof that one household recipe reliably outperforms another, and no cited controlled comparison establishes a guaranteed increase in display life.

Use only the concentration and directions specified by the product label or the relevant Extension guidance. Never mix bleach with vinegar or any other cleaner. Keep solutions away from children and animals, and allow treated surfaces to dry before display.
5. Slow moisture loss at the cut edges
Petroleum jelly can help retain moisture at cut surfaces, according to South Dakota State and Utah State Extension. Arkansas and Oklahoma Extension mention olive or other vegetable oil as practical alternatives. Apply a thin coating to the exposed cuts rather than flooding the cavity.

These coatings may slow dehydration, but they cannot stop rot caused by warm conditions, contamination or freezing. Recheck the pumpkin daily and discard it if it develops extensive mold, leaking or a collapsed structure.

Keep it cool and shaded
South Dakota State University Extension identifies 50–60°F as an optimal display range. Choose a shaded, ventilated location away from direct sun, heaters and hot outdoor surfaces. Do not seal a damp pumpkin in a container where condensation can accumulate.

Protect it from freezing
Temperatures below 32°F can damage pumpkin tissue. Bring the jack-o’-lantern indoors during a freeze; tissue may decay rapidly after it thaws.
Use a cool electric light
Real candles add heat inside the pumpkin, which can accelerate deterioration and create a fire hazard. Use a battery-operated LED tea light, another electric pumpkin light or a glow stick instead. Oklahoma State Extension specifically notes the lower heat and reduced fire risk of electric lighting.

Use those figures as planning ranges, not promises. Pumpkin variety, maturity, humidity, sun exposure, handling and temperature all affect the result.
Food-safety note
A pumpkin carved and left outdoors should not be treated as food. Arkansas Extension says that once a face has been cut and the pumpkin has sat outside, it is no longer ready to eat. Roast seeds only before carving and outdoor display, using clean seeds from a sound pumpkin.
