These 16 free summer table topper and table runner patterns cover patriotic stars, beach scenes, watermelon, citrus, sunflowers, butterflies and flexible geometric designs. Choose a motif first, then match the construction method and fabric you already have—scraps, batiks, tone-on-tones, panels or fat quarters.
How to choose a summer table topper pattern
Table toppers and runners are practical small quilts: a decorative pieced or appliquéd top, batting and backing are joined with quilting, then the edges are finished with binding. They can protect a table while adding a seasonal accent.
- For a patriotic gathering: choose Star-Spangled Summer, Summer Stars Table Topper or Salute to Summer.
- For a beach or coastal room: choose Beach Umbrella Table Runner, Ride the Wave Table Runner or Summer Sea Glass Table Runner.
- For a picnic or produce theme: choose Summertime Table Runner, Pineapple Chunks or Summer Refreshers.
- For scraps and stash fabrics: choose Sunflower Table Runner, Mix-It-Up Table Runner or Summer Days Table Topper.
The 16-pattern selection below follows the AllPeopleQuilt summer roundup credited to American Patchwork & Quilting Editors and updated July 20, 2026. Individual download pages may change their access requirements.
Patriotic and star table toppers
1. Splash of Sparkle
White-background stars are framed by gray dotted triangle corners, giving this topper a crisp, fireworks-like appearance without an overwhelming color scheme. Use a white solid or small-scale white print for the background and reserve a few bright scraps for the stars.

2. Star-Spangled Summer
This seasonal red-white-and-blue design is an uncomplicated choice for summer holidays. Combine quilting cottons in the three patriotic colors, or soften the palette with navy, cream and faded reds for a vintage look.
3. Summer Stars Table Topper
Fussy-cut large prints or use a fabric panel to create a bright, graphic centerpiece. This is especially useful when one large-scale summer print deserves to remain visible rather than being cut into small pieces.
4. Salute to Summer
Green and gray modernize a red-white-and-blue runner. Triangle-squares form banner-like shapes, so directional prints and alternating light-dark values can emphasize the movement across the table.
Beach and ocean table runners
5. Beach Umbrella Table Runner
Striped fabric creates the visual effect of looking up at a beach umbrella. Use coordinated stripe widths or mix stripes with a quiet solid so the umbrella pattern remains legible.

6. Ride the Wave Table Runner
Ocean-blue batiks provide subtle shifts in color that suggest moving water. Batiks in several blue values are a natural starting point; add a pale aqua or sandy neutral for separation if your fabrics read too dark.
7. Summer Sea Glass Table Runner
Tone-on-tone sea-glass hues create a sparkling, translucent effect. Select several related aquas, greens and blue-greens, keeping the prints low contrast so the color progression does the work.
Fruit and cool-drink designs
8. Pineapple Chunks
This quilt-as-you-go project combines piecing with batting and backing as the rows are assembled. Ragged-edge leaves complete the pineapple motif, giving the finished runner a deliberately relaxed texture. It suits yellow, gold and green scraps particularly well.

A watermelon design is made with the flip-and-sew method. Pink or red, green and a dark seed color establish the motif, while a neutral border can keep the runner from feeling too busy.
Flowers and garden motifs
11. Sunflower Table Runner
Vibrant scraps form a cheerful sunflower-inspired runner. Mix yellows and golds for the blooms and use varied greens for leaves or surrounding pieces so the design does not look flat.

12. Butterfly Garden Table Runner
Three appliqué-like butterflies cross the runner, creating a clear sense of motion. Contrasting butterfly fabrics will make the shapes stand out; a calm background helps preserve the airy garden effect.
13. Star Garden
Eight-pointed stars create a garden-like arrangement, and the description specifies that no y-seams are needed. That construction detail makes it a practical option when you want star points without the extra precision of set-in seams.

Supplies and finishing checklist
- Quilting cotton or another stable quilting fabric
- Coordinated sewing and quilting thread
- Batting sized for the completed top
- Backing fabric
- Binding fabric and a rotary cutter, ruler and mat for accurate cutting
- Appliqué adhesive or a suitable fusible product when the pattern calls for appliqué
Check the individual pattern for its cutting list, seam allowance, finished dimensions and quilting suggestions; those details are not stated consistently across the roundup. For a related example, Maywood Studio’s instructions show a 16 × 47-inch runner and direct the maker: “Turn the binding to the back side and stitch down by hand with matching thread.”
