How to Make Your Own Inlay Banding: Build, Slice and Install Veneer Patterns

Build crisp inlay banding from veneer and wood strips: choose a forgiving stripe pattern, glue and slice a flat packet, then route, fit and trim the finished strips.

Make inlay banding by gluing a precisely dimensioned packet—or “loaf”—of contrasting veneer and wood strips, slicing that packet into thin pieces, and fitting the pieces into a shallow routed groove. Start with parallel stripes: they tolerate small layout errors better than checkerboard or sawtooth patterns and teach every essential operation.

What inlay banding is (and is not)

Banding is a repeated geometric inlay assembled as a flat strip and embedded into a surface. A pattern may create a three-dimensional illusion, but the finished material is still flat. Stringing is different: it is a simple, usually narrow linear line. As Mario Rodriguez explains in Popular Woodworking, “Banding and stringing serve different purposes.”

Every element should present long grain on the face, not end grain. Long-grain faces produce cleaner visual lines and are less likely to crumble during fitting.

Choose a pattern, stock and dimensions

Best first pattern: parallel stripes

Parallel stripes use straight, repeated layers and are the most forgiving design for a first packet. They can also be mitered around a corner more readily than patterns whose geometry must continue across the joint.

More demanding patterns

Pattern What it requires Relative difficulty
Parallel stripes Uniform veneer layers and straight slicing Lowest; recommended first project
Checkerboard Precisely sized, alternating solid-wood chips and veneer Moderate to high
Sawtooth or diagonal Accurate angled cuts; a 45-degree bandsaw setup and sled Highest; very sensitive to angle and alignment

Select contrasting, stable stock

  • Use straight-grained, knot-free, tight-grained wood with strong color contrast.
  • Dyed harewood or black veneer paired with maple provides a practical alternative to ebony and holly.
  • Common veneer thicknesses are 1/32 inch and 1/16 inch. Buy or mill all components to a known, repeatable thickness.

Uniform thickness and clean cuts determine whether the pattern reads crisply. Reject warped, split or irregular stock before assembly.

Example layouts to copy

Imperial parallel-stripe packet

One WOOD Magazine example uses one 3/16-inch maple strip, two 1/32-inch maple strips and four pieces of black veneer. Dry-stack the layers in order before applying glue so you can catch a reversed or missing component.

Fine metric banding

An Australian Wood Review example produces a 3.2 mm-wide band from two 0.6 mm black-veneer borders and two alternating 1.0 mm dark and light strips. Its narrow scale is delicate; a 6.35 mm (1/4-inch) version is easier to handle for a first attempt.

Build the veneer packet

1. Rip and prepare every strip

Cut strips cleanly with a sharp blade and a stable fence. Use a zero-clearance throat plate and a push stick when ripping thin veneer or small chips. For checkerboard work, a standoff block and a tight-fitting miter gauge help make identical chips; discard any chip that is short, tapered or damaged.

2. Dry-assemble the pattern

Arrange the layers on a flat surface and verify the sequence, orientation and total width. The faces that will show in the finished banding must be long grain. Mark one reference edge across the packet so the order remains clear while clamping.

3. Glue between release cauls

Use a melamine caul or a caul covered with tape so squeeze-out does not permanently bond the packet to the fixture. Brush on a thin, even glue film, assemble the layers without sliding them out of register, and clamp the packet flat. Popular Woodworking suggests clamp spacing of about 3 inches for even pressure. Tighten enough to close joints without bowing the packet or squeezing out all adhesive.

4. Let the packet cure flat

Keep the assembly between the cauls until the adhesive has cured according to its label. A packet that twists or springs apart will produce wedges and gaps when sliced.

Flatten and slice the loaf

Square a reference face and edge

After removing the cauls, joint or plane one face flat and one edge square to it. These two references let the bandsaw fence hold the packet consistently and keep every slice parallel.

Set up the bandsaw

Use a sharp, fine blade, a stable fence and a zero-clearance support where practical. In the WOOD Magazine example, the fence is set about 1/8 inch from the blade. Feed the packet steadily; do not force it sideways or twist it through the cut.

Re-plane as needed

Each slice includes a saw kerf and may carry a slight irregularity. Re-plane the reference face after several cuts so the next strips remain uniform. The cited maple-and-black-veneer packet yielded approximately 13–15 inlay strips, a result tied to that packet’s dimensions and saw setup rather than a universal production count. Popular Woodworking’s example cuts finished strips about 1/16 inch thick.

Route a groove and fit the banding

1. Make a test cut

On scrap from the same material, install a 1/4-inch downcut spiral bit in a trim router with an edge guide. Set the groove slightly shallower than the banding is thick, then make a test pass. A shallow groove leaves material proud for final trimming; it is safer to deepen the groove than to recover from one cut too deep.

2. Tune width and depth

Widen the groove incrementally until a sample strip enters with firm, even contact along its length. Do not rely on a loose fit to accommodate glue; excessive clearance creates visible glue lines and allows the strip to shift.

3. Square inside corners

A round router bit leaves radiused ends in a routed channel. Use a sharp chisel to square the corners before applying adhesive. For a run that turns a corner, lay out the joint on the actual workpiece first. Linear stripes can be mitered around corners; square and sawtooth patterns require careful continuation of the geometry and more exact layout.

4. Glue and clamp

Brush a controlled amount of glue into the groove and onto the strip, press the banding home, and wipe squeeze-out promptly. Use a taped caul over the strip to distribute pressure without sticking to the inlay. Keep the caul aligned so it does not push the banding sideways or below the surface.

5. Trim flush

Once cured, remove the remaining proud material with a low-angle block plane or sand it flush. Take light cuts across end grain at corners to avoid lifting the strip. Finish the surrounding surface only after the banding is level.

Quality checks before committing to the workpiece

  • Pattern: Dry-stack and photograph the sequence so alternating colors cannot be reversed.
  • Dimensions: Measure several points on each strip; variation will telegraph as uneven lines after slicing.
  • Cut quality: Replace dull blades and discard chipped veneer rather than hiding defects in glue.
  • Fit: Test both width and depth on scrap made from the same stock and with the same router setup.
  • Safety: Keep hands clear of blades, use push sticks, stable fences and sleds, and support small work securely.

Choosing a method for your project

Decision factor Parallel stripes Checkerboard Sawtooth/diagonal
Dimensional tolerance Most forgiving Requires equal chip size Requires equal chip size and angle
Material contrast Moderate to strong High visual contrast High; alignment makes the pattern
Equipment demand Bandsaw, router and basic cutting setup Accurate chip-cutting setup plus bandsaw and router 45-degree bandsaw setup, sled, router and careful layout
Corners Can be mitered comparatively simply Needs pattern-matched layout Most exacting to continue across a joint
Waste risk Lowest during learning Higher if chips vary Highest if angle or registration is wrong

Troubleshooting common failures

Uneven stripes

Check strip thickness, packet squareness and bandsaw-fence alignment. Re-plane the reference face and edge before continuing.

Skelang Maple 2" x 50' Roll Wood Veneer Edge Banding Preglued Iron-On with Hot Melt Adhesive Edgebanding Flexible Wood Tape
  • Material: Real maple wood veneer edge banding
  • Size: 2 inches×50 feet(W*L)
  • Adhesive attach: The pre-glue backing was a nice touch and easy to work well by the iron or the edgebander machine. The strip attached quickly and firmly
  • Perfect appearance: Create durable and aesthetically pleasing trim edges during finish carpentry
  • Application:Used to cover the exposed sides of materials such as plywood, particle board ,hardboard or medium density fiber board

Gaps in the groove

The channel is too wide, the strip is undersized or the route wandered. Recut a test groove with a tighter edge-guide setup; do not depend on a thick glue layer to fill a visible gap.

Banding sits below the surface

The groove was too deep or clamping pressure forced the strip down. Set depth shallower on the next pass and use a caul that bears evenly.

Pattern breaks at a corner

Dry-fit and mark the miter or continuation before routing. Stripes are easiest to align; checkerboard and sawtooth designs need the pattern indexed on both adjoining faces.
