That arrangement saves cutting-table space without losing track of specialized tools.
Start with a simple sorting system
Before choosing containers, sort every ruler and template into three groups:
- Daily-use rulers: keep these within arm’s reach and visible.
- Occasional or specialty rulers: store them together by shape, size, or technique.
- Project and travel sets: keep each template with its instructions and related pieces.
Large, flat acrylic rulers need support so they do not lean, slide, or develop edge damage. Small irregular templates are easier to control when each set has its own labeled compartment.

Pegboard holders
A pegboard preserves table and drawer space while keeping your inventory visible. Create Room’s Organizer Peg Package is described as suitable for spools, bobbins, scissors, rulers, and other hangable items, but it is designed for Create Room pegboards. Check the board system before ordering.
#1 Best Overall
- Covered cardboard insert with mesh pocket for storage of books and patterns; the insert fits neatly in place over quilt blocks to keep them protected and flat
- Elastic compression straps with parachute clip closure keeps contents from shifting; zip-around closure construction keeps bag securely closed
- Sturdy reinforced frame provides stability and long-term use
- Closed case fits onto lap to work while traveling
An angled holder documented by Alex and Abby/LignumAndLight has four individual slots plus a top slot, with 7 mm slot depth, 36 mm slot height, and 45-degree angles. It is offered for IKEA SKÅDIS and 1/4-inch pegboards, so hole spacing and accessory compatibility must match your board.
Photo ledges and shallow shelves
A 3-by-30-inch photo shelf can stand cutting rulers while using little depth. This works particularly well for large, flat rulers used often. Add a front lip or bookend so acrylic pieces cannot slide forward or sideways.

Freestanding racks for the cutting area
A slotted rack is convenient when the same rulers are used at nearly every cutting session. Missouri Star Quilt Co. describes its Ruler Rack as holding up to ten acrylic quilting rulers in ten slots, with a 1-inch-by-5-inch-by-5-inch footprint. Treat those figures as product specifications, not an independent capacity test.
Prym’s OmniRack uses a grid to separate rulers and keep them accessible. One user reports that the grid keeps flexible rulers flat when they are laid inside; that is anecdotal rather than a controlled comparison. A rack is best placed away from the edge of the table and direct sunlight.

Binders and pouches for small templates
Binder pockets
Clip-sealable binder pockets in a large D-ring binder keep small templates and instruction sheets together. Label each pocket with the template name, size, or project. Clear pockets make it possible to check contents without opening every compartment.
Zippered pouches
Zippered pencil pouches provide a portable alternative for classes, retreats, or project boxes. Put the instructions in the same pouch as the templates, and use one pouch per project or technique to prevent pieces from mixing.

Drawers, totes, and file holders
Protected cabinet storage
Drawers and totes shield acrylic from dust and reduce visual clutter, although they make the collection harder to inventory. Group pieces by shape, size, or project, and label the outside of every container.
Hanging folders and file holders
Labeled hanging folders in a scrapbooking tote can accommodate specialty rulers and templates. A metal file holder or wooden slatted board offers another way to separate flat pieces vertically. Keep each instruction sheet with the corresponding ruler rather than in a separate paperwork pile.

Choosing the right method
| Storage method | Space use | Visibility | Protection | Portability | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pegboard | Uses wall space | High | Moderate; exposed to dust and sunlight | Low | Mixed sizes used regularly |
| Photo ledge | Minimal table depth | High | Moderate; use a lip or bookend | Low | Large, flat daily-use rulers |
| Slotted rack | Uses shelf or table space | High | Moderate | Low | Repeated flat rulers; some racks provide ten slots |
| Binder pockets or pouches | Compact | Medium to high | Good | High | Small or irregular templates and instructions |
| Drawers or totes | Uses cabinet or floor space | Low | High | Medium | Specialty and infrequently used pieces |
| File holders or hanging folders | Uses shelf or tote space | Medium | Good | Medium | Many flat rulers grouped by category |
Keep the system usable
- Store the heaviest or largest rulers where their edges are fully supported.
- Leave enough clearance to remove one ruler without pulling out a stack.
- Keep acrylic away from direct sunlight and crowded areas where edges can be chipped.
- Label by the term you will actually search for, such as “half-square triangle,” “curves,” or a project name.
- Review the collection periodically and move rarely used tools out of the prime cutting zone.
When a modular system makes sense
A modular craft-room system is worthwhile when rulers are only one part of a larger organization problem. SmartJars describes a pegboard system with rearrangeable docks and jars for notions, tools, and small parts. It offers flexibility for a whole workroom, but it is broader than a ruler-specific rack and may be unnecessary if you only need to store a few rulers.
Quick Recap
A practical setup for most rooms
- Place the five or ten rulers used most often in a rack, photo ledge, or compatible wall holder.
- Put small templates and their instructions into labeled binder pockets or zippered pouches.
- Group specialty rulers in hanging folders, a file holder, or a labeled tote.
- Create a separate portable binder or pouch for retreat and class projects.
- Check every pegboard accessory against the board’s hole spacing and stated system before purchase.
