HueForge turns a 2D image into a shallow, layered 3D relief by modeling how light passes through stacked filament colors. It is neither a slicer nor a painting program: you arrange the colors, prepare the model and swap instructions, then slice and print them with a compatible FDM printer. A multicolor printer is optional, but the printer must pause and resume reliably for manual filament changes or support an automated material system.
What HueForge makes—and how it works
HueForge describes its process as “Filament Painting”: creating detailed multicolor prints through swaps by layer. The result is a few-millimetre-thick, mostly flat relief—not a paper-thin ink print. Its image is formed by stacking colored filament layers so their combined appearance evokes the source image.
The software models this blending using Transmission Distance (TD), a measure of the thickness of solid filament through which light penetrates. HueForge uses TD values to estimate how layers of different colors will look together. You can use values from its library where available, or measure filament samples and save their values. A TD value is not a guarantee of an exact screen-to-print color match: filament brand, pigment, layer height and viewing light all affect the result.
HueForge does not automatically choose or paint the filament colors for you. You select colors you own, arrange them in the software and adjust the image and model settings while checking the preview.

Do you need a multicolor printer or AMS?
No. HueForge says it can work with any FDM printer, provided the machine can pause and resume for manual filament swaps or has a supported automated material-change setup. A single-extrusion printer can make a HueForge print; you change the filament at the specified layer pauses. An AMS, MMU, CFS or tool changer can automate material handling, but is not a prerequisite.
Manual swaps require attention at every change and create more opportunities to miss a pause or resume incorrectly. An automated system reduces hands-on handling, but the relevant question is whether your printer and material system can execute the required changes reliably. Do not assume every printer interprets the same exported G-code or pause command in the same way.

- Check that your printer can pause at a layer, remain paused while you change filament, and resume the print without losing position.
- Confirm how your slicer and printer handle pause commands or automated material changes before committing to a large print.
- Compare machines on pause-and-resume reliability, filament-change workflow, nozzle and layer-height consistency, and whether automation is worth the added cost.
Choose filament for layered color, not just its label
For a first project, use ordinary, consistent PLA in several contrasting colors. Filament marketed as “translucent PLA filament for HueForge” may help when shopping, but a color name alone cannot predict the printed result. Pigments and brands transmit light differently, and results vary with layer height and lighting. Use measured TD values when possible and expect to tune the palette against a physical test.
When comparing filament, consider diameter consistency, available colors, whether useful TD data exists, and how consistently spools from the same product reproduce the result. If you buy translucent PLA filament for HueForge, treat the software preview as a prediction rather than a promise of an identical printed color.

HueForge workflow: from image to printed relief
- Choose and import an image. Start with a high-contrast JPG, PNG, WEBP or SVG image, then import it into HueForge.
- Build a palette from your actual spools. Add the filament colors you own. Use HueForge library TD values where available, or measure samples and save the results.
- Adjust and preview. Arrange the colors, tune the color sliders and image and mesh settings, and review HueForge’s predicted appearance.
- Export the model and swap guidance. Export the model along with the text or project instructions that identify the color-change layers.
- Slice at the intended layer height. Use the same layer height assumed by the HueForge project. If the layer height changes, the layer positions for swaps may no longer match the intended design.
- Set up the filament changes. Configure manual pause commands in the slicer or set the printer’s automated material system to change colors at each specified height. Check that your particular printer understands the commands it receives.
- Print a small test. Check how the chosen spools, TD values, layer height and lighting come together. Tune the palette or values before printing a larger piece.
What to expect from the first print
The preview is HueForge’s estimate of layered colors, not a controlled guarantee of print accuracy. If a test looks different than expected, review whether the TD values reflect the actual filament, whether swaps occurred at the intended layers, and whether the lighting changes the way the relief appears. Make one adjustment at a time where practical, so you can tell which change improved the result.
No authoritative benchmark establishes a universal print time, failure rate, color accuracy or total cost for HueForge projects. Those outcomes depend on the image, settings, printer, swap workflow and materials, so plan a test print rather than relying on a general performance figure.
