A hot glue gun works neatly when the stick, temperature, surface and technique match the job. Check your gun and glue-stick instructions before heating, test the flow and bond on scrap, keep materials at room temperature, and rest the hot tool only in its approved position. The 11 tips below cover setup, control, cleanup prevention and burn safety for crafts and small repairs.

1. Check the gun and glue-stick compatibility first

Before plugging in, read the gun manual and the glue-stick packaging. Confirm the stick diameter, glue type and required temperature all match that specific tool. A stick that fits physically may still be unsuitable for the gun’s heating system or your material.

Dremel also warns against pulling out a partly used glue stick while the gun is hot: molten adhesive can spill. Leave the stick in place unless the manufacturer gives a safe removal method.

For a basic setup, use a hot glue gun with compatible hot glue sticks. A heat-resistant craft mat can protect the work surface, but it is optional rather than a substitute for safe handling.

2. Match temperature to the adhesive and material

Use the temperature setting specified by the manufacturer for the particular stick and project. Do not treat one temperature as universal. Dremel gives 220°F as an example setting for its colored glue sticks; that is Dremel-specific guidance, not a general rule. Check the packaging or product information for your own sticks.

If your gun has low- and high-temperature modes, choose only the mode approved for the stick and material. A low-temperature glue gun may be appropriate for heat-sensitive craft materials, but the product instructions determine suitability.

3. Prepare clean, dry surfaces

Remove dust, loose fibers, grease and moisture before gluing. A dirty or unstable surface can fail even when the adhesive is applied correctly. Make sure parts are positioned and supported before you squeeze the trigger, because hot-melt glue begins cooling quickly.

Hot glue is useful for crafts and some small repairs, but the available guidance does not establish a universal strength, durability or surface rating. For a load-bearing, high-heat, outdoor or safety-critical repair, follow the adhesive and material manufacturers’ instructions instead of assuming hot glue is adequate.

4. Bring cold materials up to room temperature

Work with room-temperature surfaces whenever possible. Bostik explains that a cold material can cool hot-melt adhesive too quickly, reducing the strength of the bond: Bostik’s guidance.

Do not warm an item with an improvised heat source that could damage it. Simply allowing the material to reach room temperature is the safer preparation step.

5. Test the flow and adhesion on scrap

Use a piece of the same or a similar material to check how the glue exits the nozzle, how quickly it skins over and whether it grips. Dremel recommends a scrap test before the real piece: Dremel’s glue-gun guide.

This test lets you adjust your trigger pressure and placement before an irreversible application. If the test bond is weak, stop and recheck the stick, temperature, surface preparation and material compatibility.

6. Squeeze the trigger gradually

Apply only the amount needed for the joint. Start with gentle pressure and increase it slowly; a hard squeeze can release a large blob that spreads beyond the edge. Dremel specifically advises controlled trigger pressure.

Rest your wrist or elbow on a stable, protected surface to reduce shaking. This gives you better control over bead width and placement, especially on small pieces. Keep the project fixed so you do not have to chase it while the glue is hot.

8. Keep the nozzle close, but not touching

Hold the nozzle near the work without pressing it into the material. Dremel warns that the hot nozzle can leave burn marks. Touching it to a finished surface can also drag soft adhesive or damage heat-sensitive materials.

9. Set up a clear, stable work area

Clear scraps, solvents, paper clutter and other unintended targets from the immediate area. Arrange the parts, glue sticks and any supports within reach so you are not stretching across the hot tool.

Use the gun’s built-in stand or another resting position approved by its manufacturer. Never balance the nozzle on the bench or leave the heated gun where it can roll, fall or contact the work surface.

10. Leave the tool hot only as long as necessary

Complete the application, release the trigger and place the gun in its approved resting position. Do not move, store or dismantle it until the manual’s cooling guidance has been met. Remember that residual adhesive and the nozzle remain hot after dispensing stops.

11. Treat burns and hot adhesive as an immediate hazard

Electrical Safety First states: “The tip gets extremely hot so never attempt to touch it during or immediately after use.” Keep children, pets and other people away from the heated gun, nozzle and fresh glue. Their glue-gun safety advice also says to hold a burn under ice-cold water.

If hot glue contacts skin, do not pull it off while it is still molten. Move away from the heat source, cool the area with water as advised by safety guidance, and seek appropriate medical help for a serious or extensive burn. Follow the tool manual and local medical advice for any incident.

A simple workflow that combines the tips

  1. Read the gun and stick instructions and verify compatibility.
  2. Select the specified temperature and place the gun on its approved stand.
  3. Prepare clean, dry, room-temperature surfaces.
  4. Test flow and adhesion on scrap.
  5. Support your wrist or elbow, then apply a controlled bead with the nozzle close but not touching.
  6. Release the trigger, set the gun down safely and keep everyone away while it cools.
