There is no single best weed killer for lawns, driveways, planted beds, and gravel. Choose by the site, the weed, and the plants you want to keep: a lawn product must be labeled for the specific turf and target weeds, while a nonselective product for hardscape can damage desirable plants.
Check the exact product label before use. Preemergent products are intended to prevent listed weeds before they emerge; postemergent products target weeds that are already growing. Neither category is a universal fix, and formulations and site restrictions differ.
Choose by the area you are treating
| Area | What to look for | Main caution |
|---|---|---|
| Lawn | A selective lawn herbicide labeled for the grass species and target weed | Selective does not mean safe for every turf. Do not apply a general weed-and-grass killer over a lawn unless its label specifically permits that use. |
| Driveway or pavement cracks | A product labeled for the specific hardscape site; choose postemergent control for visible weeds or labeled residual prevention if that is the goal | Keep spray off desirable plants and follow label directions for application and runoff precautions. |
| Gravel | A product labeled for gravel and the intended control period | Residual products may prevent desirable grasses or other plants from growing. Check restrictions near roots and areas to be planted or seeded. |
| Landscape beds | Hand removal, mulch, or a herbicide labeled for the bed and the established ornamentals | Preemergents address some small-seeded annual weeds; they generally do not control established perennial weeds. |
How to choose a lawn weed killer
First identify the turf and the weed. A selective broadleaf herbicide can control listed weeds while sparing listed turf when used as directed, but the label determines which grass species and weeds are covered. Maryland Extension recommends checking the target weed list, turf species, timing, and reseeding restrictions when selecting a product. [c02]
Do not assume that a product is lawn-safe because it is sold as a weed killer. University of Nevada, Reno Extension warns that nonselective products such as Roundup can kill grasses along with weeds. [c06]

Driveways and gravel: control visible weeds or prevent new growth
For cracks, pavement edges, and gravel where vegetation is unwanted, choose a product labeled for that site. Postemergent products target weeds already growing. Some residual products also prevent regrowth for a label-specific period, but residual control is not appropriate everywhere.

Two EPA-accepted residual labels cited in the research describe durations of up to four months and up to one year for their particular formulations. These are label claims, not a universal duration or a head-to-head product comparison. Check the exact product label for its claimed duration, sites, and restrictions. [c01]
The cited residual labels warn against lawn use and include cautions about desirable trees’ and shrubs’ root zones and areas that will be seeded or planted within the stated interval. Do not generalize those restrictions or durations to other products; read the label for the product you have. [c01]

Landscape beds: protect the plants you want to keep
In a planted bed, begin with hand removal and mulch, or select a herbicide specifically labeled for the bed and its established plants. A preemergent may help prevent some small-seeded annual weeds, but it is not a general solution for established perennial weeds. Clemson Extension explains that preemergents generally do not control larger-seeded annuals or established perennial weeds. [c03]
Do not assume that a lawn herbicide is suitable for flower or vegetable beds. UF/IFAS discusses options for Florida landscape beds, but its advice has regional context; check the product label and local conditions before applying. [c07]

Preemergent or postemergent?
Choose based on whether weeds are already growing or you are trying to prevent a known seasonal flush. Preemergent treatment is intended to stop listed weeds before emergence; postemergent treatment targets weeds after they are growing. A preemergent is not a substitute for controlling established perennial weeds. [c02][c03][c06]
- Identify the site, the weed, and the desirable grass or plants.
- Decide whether the job is to control visible weeds or prevent listed weeds before emergence.
- Compare products by labeled site, target weeds, selective or nonselective action, and compatibility with desirable plants.
- Check the label for application, watering or rain, reapplication, reseeding, planting, and root-zone directions.
- Apply only as directed, taking care to avoid drift onto desirable vegetation.
Safety and label checks
The label for the exact product is the controlling source for its permitted uses and application directions. Check the site, target weeds, compatible turf or plants, application rate, weather restrictions, and any watering, re-entry, reseeding, reapplication, or root-zone directions that apply.

FAQ
What weed killer kills weeds but not grass?
Use a selective lawn herbicide whose label lists both your grass species and the target weed. Selective products are not universally safe for all turf, so check the specific label before use. [c02][c04]
What is the best weed killer for gravel?
Choose a product labeled for gravel and for your goal: postemergent control of weeds already growing, or residual prevention of regrowth. Residual products can prevent desirable plants from growing too, so check label restrictions and duration for the exact formulation. [c01]
Does preemergent kill weeds that are already growing?
Preemergents are intended to prevent listed weeds before emergence, not to control established perennial weeds. For visible weeds, consider an appropriate labeled postemergent option or nonchemical removal. [c02][c03][c06]

Can I use a lawn herbicide in a flower bed?
Not unless the product label specifically permits that bed use and is compatible with the plants there. A lawn label does not automatically authorize use in ornamental or vegetable beds. [c07]
