Which appliances should not use an extension cord?
Major appliances
ESFI says, “All major appliances should be plugged directly into a wall receptacle outlet.” Do not use an extension cord or multi-outlet converter as a workaround. If an appliance cannot reach a suitable receptacle, move it closer to one or ask a qualified electrician whether an additional receptacle is appropriate. Space heaters
Plug a space heater directly into a wall outlet. ESFI advises against using an extension cord or power strip with a heater, and says not to connect another electrical device to the same outlet while the heater is in use. Electric blankets

Does official guidance name seven gadgets?
No exact seven-item list is established by the cited ESFI guidance. ESFI separately names hair dryers, shavers, curling irons, clothes irons and toasters as small appliances to unplug when they are not in use. That advice is not the same as saying those five items may never be connected through an extension cord. When is an extension cord appropriate?
Extension cords are for temporary use, not as permanent wiring. For a device that can appropriately use one, choose a cord intended for the setting—indoor or outdoor—and rated to meet or exceed the device’s power demand. The cord’s gauge and length affect its capacity; check its labeling and the manufacturer’s specifications rather than assuming that any cord will do. Frequent or permanent reliance on extension cords may mean the room needs more receptacles. ESFI recommends having a qualified electrician assess the need and install additional outlets where appropriate; an outlet multiplier or a longer cord is not an equivalent permanent fix. Warning signs that call for an electrician
