To choose one, compare its undertone and light reflectance with the room’s orientation and fixed finishes, then test a physical sample in that room before committing. For US interior painting, Angi’s 2026 guide estimates $2–$6 per square foot, but the total depends on scope and preparation.
What Makes a Paint Color Neutral?
Neutral does not mean undertone-free. Sherwin-Williams describes cool neutrals as having blue, violet, or silver undertones, and warm neutrals as having warmer undertones. Its examples include cool shades On the Rocks SW 7671, Pewter Cast SW 7673, Proper Gray SW 6003, and Snowfall SW 6000; warm examples include Divine White SW 6105, Whole Wheat SW 6121, Ivoire SW 6127, Basket Beige SW 6143, and Double Latte SW 9108. These are examples from one manufacturer’s guide, not a ranking or a guarantee of how a color will look in your home.
When comparing neutral paint, consider two separate questions: does the undertone lean warm or cool, and how much light does the color reflect in the room? Also check how the candidate looks beside flooring, counters, tile, cabinetry, and other finishes that will remain. Treat those pairings as design considerations, not as tested combinations.
How Room Light Affects Neutral Paint
Room orientation and the amount of daylight can affect how a neutral appears. Sherwin-Williams explains that Light Reflectance Value (LRV) indicates how much light a paint reflects and can help with selection, but LRV does not guarantee how a color will look in an individual room. A paint chip or screen image is not a substitute for observing a physical sample in the intended space.

For bright, airy spaces, Sherwin-Williams’ neutral guide identifies an LRV range of roughly 50–60 as useful and names Grayish SW 6001, Front Porch SW 7651, and Worldly Gray SW 7043 as examples. Its guide cautions that an overly bright white can feel sterile. These are the manufacturer’s general suggestions, not universal rules.
Choosing a neutral for a north-facing room
Sherwin-Williams says north-facing rooms tend to receive less natural light and suggests considering warm undertones and colors with LRV 60 or higher. The guide gives Rivers Edge SW 7517, Drift of Mist SW 9166, and Olympus White SW 6253 as examples. Test any candidate in the actual room: the guidance is a starting point, not a promise of a particular result.
Using darker neutrals
Darker neutrals can add drama, but Sherwin-Williams notes they may be less suitable in rooms with little natural light. Consider the room’s daylight and the finishes around the paint before choosing a darker shade.

Compare Neutral Paint Options
| Comparison | What it means | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Warm undertone | A neutral with a warmer cast | Compare it with the room’s fixed finishes and view a sample in the room. |
| Cool undertone | A neutral with a blue, violet, or silver cast, as described in Sherwin-Williams’ guide | Check whether the cast works beside existing surfaces and in the room’s daylight. |
| Higher LRV | A paint that reflects more light | Use LRV as one selection clue, not a guarantee of brightness or appearance. |
| Lower LRV | A paint that reflects less light | Consider the room’s available natural light and test the shade in place. |
How to Sample a Neutral Paint Color
- Shortlist neutral colors based on warm or cool undertone and the room’s light.
- Obtain physical samples or color chips from the paint manufacturer; do not rely only on a screen or printed reproduction.
- View each candidate in the intended room beside the fixed finishes it needs to work with.
- Observe the sample under the room’s changing daylight before deciding.
- Choose only after checking the sample in the space where the paint will be used.
What Does It Cost to Paint a Home Interior?
Angi’s 2026 guide estimates US interior painting at $2–$6 per square foot. The same guide reports an average total of $2,022, with a stated range of $350–$5,800. These are Angi estimates, not guaranteed rates or contractor bids; definitions and scope can vary. Confirm whether a quote is based on floor area or wall area and which surfaces are included before comparing prices.

| Interior painting | $2–$6 per square foot | Broad US estimate; confirm the area and surfaces covered. |
| Average total | $2,022 | Angi’s guide also states a range of $350–$5,800. |
| Sanding and patching | $0.50–$0.75 per square foot | Preparation may add to the project cost. |
| Drywall repairs | About $600 average | Figure reported in Angi’s cost insights; repairs vary by project. |
Angi identifies area, paint type, and square footage as cost factors. Sanding, patching, and drywall repairs can add expense, and primer may be needed, especially when covering a dark color with a light one. Ask each painter to specify the same surfaces, coats, preparation, repairs, and materials so you can compare written bids on a consistent basis.
Ask What Preparation Is Included
Preparation can affect both scope and price. Angi’s guide lists sanding and patching, drywall repair, and possible primer as considerations. When requesting estimates, ask the painter to describe what preparation is included and whether repairs or priming are priced separately. Do not assume that a per-square-foot estimate covers the same work as another company’s estimate.

FAQ
Are neutral paint colors warm or cool?
They can be either. Sherwin-Williams describes cool neutrals with blue, violet, or silver undertones and also lists warm-neutral examples. Check the undertone rather than assuming a color called “neutral” has no cast.
What neutral paint colors work in a north-facing room?
Sherwin-Williams suggests considering warm undertones and LRV 60 or higher for north-facing rooms, which tend to receive less natural light. Its examples are Rivers Edge SW 7517, Drift of Mist SW 9166, and Olympus White SW 6253. Sample the candidate in the room, since the guidance is not a guarantee.

What does LRV mean when choosing paint?
Light Reflectance Value indicates how much light a paint reflects. Sherwin-Williams presents it as a useful selection clue, while noting that received light affects how color looks. LRV alone cannot guarantee a particular appearance in your room.
