6 Ways to Get Rid of Scratches on Your Wood Floors

Choose a wood-floor scratch repair by checking its depth, the affected area, and the floor’s finish. Minor marks may need a touch-up; deep damage may need professional repair.

The right fix depends on how deep the scratch is, how much floor is affected, and what finish is on the wood. Clean the area first, then choose a spot touch-up for a minor mark, a compatible maintenance coat for broader wear, or professional repair for a gouge, exposed wood, or damaged board. Products and refinishing methods are not interchangeable across all wood floors.

1. Clean the floor and assess the scratch

Remove grit with a soft broom or a vacuum suitable for wood floors, then clean the spot with a product approved for your floor. This makes the mark easier to see; cleaning will not repair a gouge. Follow the flooring maker’s care instructions rather than reaching for a general household cleaner. Bruce cautions against ammonia-based, wax-based, bleach, detergent, abrasive, oil-soap, and acidic or vinegar cleaners on its floors; that warning should not be assumed to cover every brand, so check your own floor’s guidance. Bruce floor-care guidance and its hardwood floor FAQ explain its recommendations.

Once the floor is clean and dry, inspect the mark in good light. Is it a light line in the finish, a wider area of dull or worn finish, a gouge you can feel, or a place where bare wood is visible? The National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) notes, “Most scratches in wood flooring will occur in the finish, not the wood itself.” Its maintenance guidance makes the distinction useful: a surface mark may need only a small touch-up, while damage through the finish calls for a more substantial repair.

2. Touch up a minor surface scratch

For a small scratch that has not cut through to bare wood, a color-matched hardwood touch-up marker, stain pen, or floor-maker’s repair kit may help blend the mark. NWFA lists markers, stain pens, and furniture repair kits among options for minor surface scratches, and Bruce describes markers or filler sticks in its touch-up kit for small scratches. NWFA repair guidance and Bruce touch-up and care recommendations support these limited uses.

  • Tips for mixing colors: You can mix the desired wood filler color according to the color chart. When mixing colors, first add the lighter repair filler, then gradually add the darker wood repair filler, observing the color changes until you achieve the desired shade
  1. Confirm that the product is intended for your floor and finish; test it in an inconspicuous spot if the instructions permit.
  2. Apply sparingly and follow the product and floor-maker directions. A close color match matters: too dark or too light can make the mark more noticeable.
  3. Let the repair dry or cure for the period stated on the product label before walking on it or placing furniture back.

A marker colors a small surface mark; it does not rebuild missing wood or repair a damaged board. If the scratch is deep or the wood is exposed, use an appropriate filler or arrange a professional assessment instead.

3. Fill a scratch or gouge when the product is designed for it

A filler stick may suit a small scratch, while a deeper gouge may call for a filler formulated for that kind of damage. Bruce describes touch-up filler sticks for small scratches and acrylic fillers for deep scratches and gouges. Bona Pacific Filler is intended for cracks, holes, chips, gouges, and broken edges before finishing. Bruce’s touch-up guidance and Bona’s product information describe these separate applications.

Filling is not the same as coloring a superficial line. A filled area may need leveling and a finish that matches the surrounding floor. Use only a product whose instructions cover the damage and flooring, and do not assume a filler will make a repair invisible. For a large gouge, exposed wood, or uncertain finish compatibility, ask a wood-flooring professional before applying anything.

4. Use a compatible refresher for broader superficial wear

If the problem is a wider dull, worn, or lightly scratched area rather than one isolated gouge, a floor-finish refresher may be an option. Bruce recommends Fresh Finish to recondition larger worn hardwood areas; Bona describes its refresher for dull, worn, or scratched polyurethane-finished floors. These uses are product- and finish-specific, not a blanket recommendation for every wood floor. See Bruce’s floor-care instructions and Bona’s refresher and recoating guidance.

Before applying a refresher, verify the exact finish, check the product label and floor warranty, and confirm that there is no incompatible wax, polish, or coating on the surface. Applying a product over an unknown finish can leave an unsatisfactory result or complicate later recoating.

5. Ask whether a maintenance coat is suitable

When superficial scratches or scuffs cover a larger area, a flooring professional can assess whether the existing finish can accept a maintenance coat. NWFA describes this work as cleaning the current finish, lightly sanding it, and applying a fresh coat. Bona’s 2023 lacquer-recoating instructions describe deep cleaning, superficial abrasion, and applying a new lacquer layer to address scuff marks and superficial scratches. NWFA maintenance guidance and Bona’s recoating instructions explain the process.

6. Get deep damage assessed for refinishing or board replacement

For deep scratches, dents, finish worn through to bare wood, or other substantial floor damage, NWFA recommends complete sanding and refinishing. Bruce notes that heavily damaged boards may require replacement. NWFA refinishing guidance and Bruce’s repair guidance describe these more extensive options.

Not every wood floor can be sanded. The floor’s construction and remaining wear layer affect whether sanding is possible, and damage may be limited to one board or involve a larger area. A qualified wood-flooring professional can inspect the floor, identify its construction and finish, and explain whether repair, refinishing, or board replacement is appropriate. NWFA offers a professional finder.

How to choose the repair

What you see Likely path Key check
Small, shallow line in the finish Color-matched marker or touch-up kit Product and color must suit the floor and finish.
Small scratch or gouge with missing material Suitable filler, possibly followed by a matching finish Confirm the product is meant for that depth and damage.
Broad dullness or superficial wear Compatible refresher or professional maintenance coat Identify the finish and check for wax, polish, and warranty restrictions.
Deep scratches, exposed wood, dents, or damaged boards Professional assessment for refinishing or board replacement Construction and remaining wear layer determine whether sanding is possible.

If you do not know the finish or floor construction, avoid escalating from a cleaner or small touch-up to a coating or sanding based on appearance alone. Manufacturer instructions and a professional inspection can prevent a mismatched repair.

Prevent new scratches after the repair

  • Fit furniture legs with protector pads and replace them when worn or dirty.
  • Use suitable door mats and traffic-area rugs, and remove tracked-in grit regularly. Bruce warns that jute-backed rugs can be abrasive and advises breathable rug materials compatible with its floors; check your floor maker’s guidance.
  • Avoid walking on wood floors in high heels or sports cleats, as NWFA advises in its prevention guidance.

NWFA’s Homeowner’s Handbook to Real Wood Floors gives 60–80°F and 30–50% relative humidity year-round as environmental guidance intended to minimize seasonal shrinking and swelling. Those ranges are not a scratch-removal measure; follow the handbook and your floor maker’s advice for your home.
