Start by identifying whether your blinds are wood, faux wood or vinyl, or fabric, then check the maker’s care instructions. For ordinary dust, gently wipe the slats with microfiber or use a vacuum’s soft brush attachment on low suction. Use moisture or cleaner on grime only if the instructions for that specific blind allow it.
Before you clean: identify the blind material
Blinds that look similar can have different care requirements. Check the label, product manual, or manufacturer’s care page before using water or a cleaning solution. The safe approach depends on both the material and the soil: loose dust can usually be handled dry, while stains or sticky residue call for product-specific guidance.
- Wood: keep cleaning gentle and dry.
- Faux wood or vinyl: gentle dusting or light vacuuming may be appropriate; avoid abrasive cleaners and chemical solvents where the product instructions advise against them.
- Fabric or cellular styles: vacuum loose dust gently, and check the care instructions before applying liquid.
Three ways to clean dusty blinds
1. Dust by hand with microfiber
Use a clean microfiber cloth or a soft duster. Work gently along each slat and clean both faces so dust is not simply shifted from one side to the other. For Hunter Douglas EverWood faux wood blinds, the manufacturer recommends microfiber or a feather duster: Hunter Douglas EverWood care and cleaning.
A cloth wrapped around kitchen tongs can help reach both sides of a slat at once, but it is optional; a microfiber cloth already on hand is enough for routine dusting.

Fit a soft brush attachment, use light pressure, and select low suction if your vacuum offers it. Move along the slats gently rather than pressing the brush into them. For wood blinds, Hunter Douglas advises lowering the blind fully, tilting the slats almost all the way down, then dusting; it also permits vacuuming with a brush attachment. Follow your own product’s instructions if they differ: Hunter Douglas wood-blind care and cleaning.
3. Spot-clean grime only when the instructions allow it
Do not assume that a damp cloth or household cleaner is safe for every blind. Check the manufacturer’s directions for the specific material and product before treating a stain or sticky patch. BISSELL recommends testing a discreet area before treating a stain; this can reveal spotting or an unwanted change in appearance: BISSELL’s spot-cleaning guidance.
Fabric and cellular blinds may be too delicate for liquid cleaning, and real wood should not be treated with a one-size-fits-all wet-cleaning method. If the care instructions do not clearly permit moisture or a cleaning formula, do not apply one.

Choose the method by material and soil

Common mistakes to avoid
- Using water before checking the material: moisture may be unsuitable for real wood or delicate fabric.
- Scrubbing hard: use light contact with a cloth or brush rather than pressing or scraping the slats.
- Using abrasive cleaners or solvents indiscriminately: Hunter Douglas cautions against them for its EverWood alternative wood or vinyl products.
- Assuming a tip applies to every blind: Hunter Douglas mentions dryer sheets to reduce static cling for alternative wood or vinyl products, but that is product-specific guidance, not a universal treatment.
