Clean a shower head when you can see mineral scale or slimy film: check the fixture maker’s care instructions, then remove and soak the head and hose in an approved solution such as white vinegar if needed. Cleaning can help address visible buildup and spray problems, but it is not a guaranteed way to disinfect the plumbing or eliminate Legionella risk.
How to clean a shower head
- Check the care instructions. Look up the showerhead manufacturer’s directions before using a cleaner or taking the fixture apart. Materials and finishes vary, so use only a method compatible with your model. CDC household outlet guidance and EPA guidance for homes both advise following the maker’s instructions.
- Inspect the head. Look for visible mineral scale or slimy film, and note whether the spray is reduced, uneven, or escaping in unexpected directions. CDC recommends cleaning when buildup is visible; EPA also advises paying attention to scale and film. CDC · EPA
- Remove and soak if needed and permitted. If deposits remain and the maker allows removal, take off the showerhead and hose and soak them in a suitable solution. CDC names white vinegar as an example for removing buildup. The cited household guidance does not give a universal vinegar concentration or soaking time, so do not assume one applies to every fixture. CDC cleaning directions
- Rinse and reinstall according to the maker’s directions. Follow the fixture instructions for rinsing, reassembly, and returning it to use.
Do not drill, bore out spray holes, or scrape deposits in a way that could damage the fixture or alter its performance. EPA’s WaterSense technical guidance cautions against boring holes or manually removing scale. EPA WaterSense at Work
Why cleaning matters
It can help restore spray and flow
Mineral scale can constrict spray openings and affect how the showerhead performs. EPA notes that buildup may restrict flow, cause leaks, and impair performance. EPA WaterSense at Work
Visible buildup is a maintenance and hygiene cue
CDC says to clean showerheads and faucet aerators when buildup is visible, explaining that removal helps prevent germs from growing in these outlets. EPA also identifies scale and slimy film as signs to address. CDC household guidance · EPA home guidance

Household cleaning supports routine fixture maintenance, but the cited guidance does not establish that a vinegar soak disinfects against Legionella or controls risk throughout the plumbing system. For a suspected building-water problem or clinical concern, seek public-health or qualified water-management advice. EPA · CDC
Flush a shower head after a period of disuse
For a showerhead that has not been used for a while—CDC gives a week or more as an example—its household directions are to run cold water fully for two minutes, turn it off, then run hot water fully until it starts to feel hot. This flushing step is separate from cleaning visible buildup; it does not replace removal of scale or film. CDC flushing directions
