A gallery wall works best when its frames read as one considered composition. Choose a shape and organizing principle—such as a grid, shared palette, central anchor, or loose salon arrangement—then scale it to the wall and nearby furniture. The 52 ideas below are adaptable starting points, not fixed formulas.
52 gallery wall ideas
Grids, rows, and aligned arrangements
- Precise square grid: Repeat matching frames and even gaps for a crisp, orderly display.
- Wide rectangular grid: Arrange repeated frames in a landscape footprint to suit a broad wall.
- Two-column grid: Use a narrow, vertical grid where a wider composition would crowd the wall.
- Long hallway row: Run a sequence of pictures horizontally along a hallway wall.
- Vertical doorway column: Stack frames beside a doorway to use a slim strip of wall.
- Centered anchor: Place one larger piece in the middle and build a balanced group around it.
- Symmetrical trio: Flank a central picture with a matching pair for a formal arrangement.
- Three-piece line: Display three related works in a simple triptych-like row.
- Staggered row: Vary frame heights while aligning the pieces along a shared centerline.
- Top-aligned row: Line up the tops of frames, letting their lower edges vary.
- Bottom-aligned row: Align the lower edges above a console or other furniture.
- Repeated-size rhythm: Place the same frame size at intervals through a larger composition.
- Portrait-landscape rhythm: Alternate orientations to give a row or cluster a visual beat.
- Formal repeated frames: Use the same frame size and even intervals for a restrained, orderly look.
Shapes that fit the room
- Staircase rise: Step the frames upward to follow the angle of a staircase.
- Tall-wall silhouette: Give the overall arrangement a narrow, vertical outline for a tall, slim wall.
- Sofa-width display: Size a wide arrangement in relation to the sofa beneath it. STAS suggests roughly two-thirds of the furniture width as a starting point, not a universal rule; see its gallery wall layout guide.
- Entry-table cluster: Keep a compact group above a small table so the display suits the furniture scale.
- Headboard-centered gallery: Center the composition over the bed’s headboard.
- Turning stair landing: Arrange pictures to carry the display around the corner of a stair landing.
- Two-wall corner: Let a composition wrap across adjoining walls, considering how it reads from both directions.
- Furniture-shaped outline: Relate the overall shape of the display to the furniture below it for a deliberate, symmetrical effect. Homes & Gardens attributes this advice to Luis Carmona, founder of VERDE Interior Design: “For a gallery wall with more symmetry, try having the shape of all of the art and photographs mimic the shape of the wall that it is on.” See Homes & Gardens’ gallery wall ideas.
- Breathing room around the group: Keep open wall space around the cluster so it reads as a distinct feature rather than filling the whole wall.
- Nearly full-wall salon: Extend a loose collection across most of the available wall for a confident, collected look.
- Doorway sightline: Arrange pieces so the composition makes sense when viewed from the room entrance.
Collections and color stories
- Black-and-white photographs: Let monochrome images unify pictures from different occasions.
- Family-photo timeline: Order family photographs chronologically to make the display tell a story.
- Travel by destination: Group maps, photographs, or prints by place.
- Botanical collection: Bring together botanical illustrations or plant photographs for a nature-led theme.
- Single-color art: Choose works that share one color for a restrained, coordinated collection.
- Warm palette: Combine ochre and rust artwork with wood frames for a warm-toned display.
- Cool palette: Bring blue and green notes together with silver frames for a cooler scheme.
- Neutral with a bright accent: Keep most of the collection understated and use one vivid piece as a focal point.
- Photos and graphic prints: Mix image types, using a shared palette to connect them.
- Personal art: Frame family sketches or children’s artwork for a collection with personal meaning.
- Vintage posters: Combine posters in complementary sizes for an eclectic, collected wall.
- Music collection: Display album art or concert prints around a music theme.
- Reflective accent: Add a small mirror among framed pictures to introduce a reflective surface.
- Dimensional object: Mix framed works with one small dimensional wall object to vary the surface.
- Consistent mats, varied frames: Use similar mats to tie together frames in different finishes.
- Consistent frames, varied mats: Repeat one frame finish while varying the mats around the artwork.
- Monochrome frames, varied subjects: Keep frame colors restrained while letting the artwork subjects differ.
- Mixed metals, consistent spacing: Combine metal frame finishes, using even gaps to give the mix cohesion.
Layouts by density and display method
- Tight, unified cluster: Place frames close enough to read as one large visual unit.
- Open salon arrangement: Use a looser layout with more breathing room between pieces.
- Large works plus small cluster: Balance two larger pieces with a compact group of smaller ones.
- Central landscape, smaller portraits: Surround a broad central work with smaller portrait-oriented pieces.
- Adjustable picture rail: Hang pictures from an adjustable rail when you want to change their position without treating every arrangement as fixed. STAS discusses adjustable picture rails as an option in its layout guide.
- Layered picture ledge: Lean and overlap frames on a ledge for a display that is easy to rearrange. Check the ledge manufacturer’s installation instructions and capacity for the actual wall and objects; those details vary by product.
- Room to grow: Leave an intentional opening in the composition so you can add meaningful pieces over time.
- Mixed sizes, repeated color cues: Use varied frame sizes for a relaxed arrangement, with recurring artwork colors to link the pieces.
How to choose a layout
Start with what the wall needs to do. A formal grid or aligned row gives a collection clear order; a salon arrangement accommodates varied sizes and can feel more eclectic. Matching frames make a composition feel consistent, while mixed sizes or finishes bring variety. A collection can begin with its subject—such as travel or botanicals—or with the room’s colors. A tight arrangement reads as a single large artwork; wider gaps give individual works more space.
Then consider scale. Note the wall’s width and height, nearby furniture, and obstructions such as doors, trim, or switches. Treat the display as one overall shape, not a set of unrelated hanging points. The two-thirds-of-furniture-width suggestion from STAS can help you start sizing a composition above furniture, but the right footprint depends on the room and your collection.
How to plan and hang a gallery wall
- Measure and check the site. Record the usable wall area and note furniture, switches, trim, and doorways that constrain the composition.
- Gather the pieces. Set out the intended artwork and frames. Choose an overall shape and one organizing principle, such as a grid, common color, or central anchor.
- Try the arrangement before making holes. Lay the frames out on the floor or trace their outlines on paper, then use painter’s tape to test the shapes on the wall. Photograph a preferred layout so you can refer to it.
- Set the gaps. Keep spacing consistent within the composition, then adjust it to suit the frame sizes and how dense or open you want the arrangement to feel. Published recommendations differ: Pottery Barn’s artwork guidance gives a 2–5 inch range, while Frameology’s spacing guide varies its suggested ranges by frame size. These are starting points rather than a universal standard.
- Locate each hanging point. Transfer the layout to the wall and check the position of the hardware on each frame before marking where it will hang. Measuring frame edges alone may not locate the hanging point.
- Choose compatible hardware. Match the hanger to the wall surface and the frame’s load, and follow the hardware manufacturer’s instructions. Blick’s gallery wall guide lists planning and installation supplies; consult the actual hardware instructions for suitability rather than assuming one type works for every wall or object.
- Hang and assess the whole composition. After hanging, look at the display from across the room. Judge how the overall shape relates to the wall and furniture, not just whether each frame is individually level.
Picture rail or ledge?
A picture rail is a hanging system: pictures are suspended from the rail, and an adjustable system can make position changes easier. A picture ledge is a shelf-like display where frames rest and may be layered. The two approaches differ in how they hold and arrange frames, so check the product’s installation instructions and capacity before using a ledge; requirements are product-specific.

How far apart should gallery wall frames be?
There is no single required gap. Keep the spacing consistent within the arrangement, then choose a tighter or more open interval based on frame scale and the overall effect you want. Pottery Barn offers 2–5 inches as a range in its artwork guide; Frameology gives recommendations that vary with frame size in its spacing guide. Use those as references, then test the composition on the wall before marking hanging points.
