Five useful shop builds can reclaim floor or bench space, improve access to tools, control dust, or make repeat work easier: a revolving work station, a slide-out table saw, a Moxon vise, a shop-vac cyclone, and a machine flip-table. For cutting and routing, shop-made jigs such as sleds and featherboards can also improve control—but only when they are accurately built, securely clamped, and used with appropriate machine guards.
What makes a shop-made tool worth building?
A good shop tool solves a recurring problem: it makes a difficult task easier, a repeated task more consistent, or work safer by controlling the tool or workpiece. Popular Woodworking describes those as core benefits of jigs in its June 30, 2026 article on how jigs make difficult tasks easier. Before building, identify the space, accuracy, dust, or workholding problem you want to fix, then choose a design that fits your tools and shop.
- Space: A revolving station, drawer-mounted saw, and flip-table reclaim floor or bench area.
- Control: Sleds and routing guides constrain the workpiece or tool for more repeatable results.
- Dust: A cyclone separator catches debris before it reaches the shop vacuum; hose and vacuum fit matter.
- Safety: Push sticks and featherboards help keep hands away from cutters, but do not replace proper guarding or careful setup.
Five practical shop tools you can make yourself
1. A 5-in-1 revolving work station
Jeremy Fielding’s design, profiled by Make: on February 12, 2017, adapts a Lazy Susan-style base into a mobile circular worktable that holds up to five tools. A central PVC pipe routes power cables to a power strip inside the base, while drawers below the tools provide storage. It is especially useful when several tools need to remain accessible in a compact shop without each taking up its own permanent bench or floor footprint. See the Make: overview of Fielding’s five shop builds.
2. A drawer-mounted table saw
A shelf mechanism lets a small table saw slide beneath a workbench for storage, then pull out, rise, and lock into working position. Retracting casters let the bench move when floor space is needed. The essential design challenge is a stable, secure working position: the saw must be locked in place before use, and the installation must not interfere with the saw’s guarding or safe operation.

3. A plywood Moxon vise
A Moxon vise raises work above the bench for hand-tool tasks such as sawing or joinery. Fielding’s featured version is shop-built from plywood and has a 6-inch jaw. The body and jaws can be made in the shop; the screw hardware is a separate component. Size the vise and its attachment to suit the work you expect to hold, and ensure the workpiece is gripped securely before cutting or shaping.
4. A shop-vac cyclone separator
Fielding’s low-cost cyclone uses a shop vacuum, an old vacuum cleaner, a Spackle bucket, hose, and scrap wood for a caster stand. The separator diverts debris before it reaches the shop-vac filter, reducing the load on the vacuum. If adapting the concept with a purchased separator or hose, check that its connections match your vacuum and hose; a poor fit can undermine collection and create leaks.

5. A machine flip-table
A mobile table suspends a machine—such as a router table—upside down, leaving the opposite side available as a work surface. Side linkages rotate the machine into operating position when needed. This arrangement can make a single footprint serve as both machine storage and work surface, but the machine must be held securely in both positions and its controls and safety features must remain accessible during operation.
Build jigs for safer, more repeatable machine work
Storage builds solve space problems, while jigs guide cuts and repeated operations. Fine Woodworking’s May 21, 2020 guide to six shop-made table-saw accessories covers a push stick, zero-clearance insert, crosscut sled, outfeed table, featherboard, and tapering jig. Each addresses a different part of the work: keeping hands away from the blade, supporting stock, or guiding it consistently.

- HIGH-QUALITY MATERIAL: The body of the triangle metal file is made of T12 high-carbon steel, which provides excellent scraping ability. The fine teeth is tough and durable after tempering and hardening. This keeps the file a long service life with high durability.
- ERGONOMIC HANDLE: The comfortable ergonomic rubber handle of the steel file offers excellent control and secure grip while filing, and helps you get the job done faster.
- WIDE APPLICATIONS: The triangle file tool is suitable for shaping, sharpening, smoothing, and deburring crafts, soft metal, aluminum, tin, copper, hardwood, and hard use. Ideal for wood carving, stone carving, remodeling, boat repairs, sample workshops, foundries, etc.
- PRODUCT SIZE: The metal file tool has a total length of 32.7cm/12.8 inch; a file length of 20cm/ 8inch; a file width of 1.5cm/0.5 inch; triangle shape.
- AFTER-SALES SERVICE: Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions, our professional after-sale team will reply to you within 24 hours.
- Crosscut sled: Supports stock for square ends, repeated cuts, precise angles, and joinery.
- Featherboard: Presses stock against a fence or tabletop to maintain control while helping keep hands clear of the cutter.
- Push stick: Helps move stock through a cut while keeping hands farther from the blade.
- Zero-clearance insert: Supports material close to the blade; it must be made for the specific saw and cutting setup.
- Outfeed table: Supports longer stock as it exits the saw.
- Tapering jig: Guides angled cuts in a controlled, repeatable way.
Other useful projects include router guides, dado jigs, drill-press vises, sharpening aids, and edge-routing jigs. Wood Magazine’s workshop project-plan index lists options across dust collection, hand tools, jigs and fixtures, tool bases, workbenches, sleds, and storage. Popular Woodworking’s example of a sharpening stick helps make plane and spokeshave sharpening repeatable; its edge-routing jig can guide trimming for boards, dados, tenons, rabbets, and repeated curves.
Choose a build by the problem you need to solve
| Shop problem | Build to consider | What it helps with |
|---|---|---|
| Several tools crowd a small shop | Revolving work station | Combines tool access, storage, and a mobile footprint. |
| A saw takes up floor or bench space between uses | Drawer-mounted table saw | Stores beneath a workbench and pulls out for use. |
| Hand-tool work is awkward at bench height | Moxon vise | Raises and secures work for hand-tool operations. |
| Dust quickly loads a shop-vac filter | Cyclone separator | Separates debris upstream of the vacuum; compatibility depends on the hose and vacuum connections. |
| A machine and a work surface compete for the same area | Machine flip-table | Uses opposite sides of a mobile table for machine storage and work. |
| Machine cuts need more support or repeatability | Sled, featherboard, push stick, or guide | Supports stock, constrains movement, or keeps hands farther from cutters. |
Build and use homemade tools with care
A homemade jig is not automatically safe because it is simple or inexpensive. Build it accurately for the machine and operation, clamp or lock it securely, and keep the manufacturer’s guards and safety features in use. Check that work cannot shift or bind, that supports are stable, and that hands remain clear of cutters. If a device compromises guarding, control, or access to shutoff controls, do not use it in that configuration.
