One World Trade Center combines a high-strength concrete core with a perimeter steel frame, then uses a tapering, faceted shape to reduce wind exposure. The 104-story tower was completed in 2014. Its symbolic height is 1,776 feet, but its roof is 1,368 feet high—the same height as the original North Tower.
How tall is One World Trade Center?
The answer depends on which part of the building is being measured. The Port Authority and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) describe the completed tower as 1,776 feet tall and the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. That figure includes its mast; the main roof or parapet is lower.

SOM’s current project facts list 104 stories and a 2014 completion. Height rankings depend on the measurement convention used: the overall figure includes the mast, while the parapet figure describes the roof.
What makes the tower’s structure strong?
The tower uses a hybrid structural system: a high-strength reinforced-concrete core surrounded by a perimeter ductile steel moment frame. Rather than relying on either material alone, the two systems work together to carry loads, limit movement and provide alternate paths for forces.

Concrete core
The core’s concrete reached 14,000 pounds per square inch (psi), which ASCE described in 2021 as the strongest concrete used in New York City at that time. The core contains elevators and stairs and provides the primary support for gravity loads. It also resists wind, seismic forces and impact, working with the outer frame. Its substantial concrete shear walls contribute stiffness.
Perimeter steel frame and floors
The steel moment frame around the core adds stiffness and redundancy. Steel beams set into the core support the floors, helping create large column-free areas. The perimeter system also participates in resisting lateral forces, so the core is not the tower’s only line of structural defense. Special nodal elements transfer loads where the tower’s perimeter components taper and change geometry, according to ASCE.
The combination addresses a central high-rise design problem: a building needs to support its own weight and occupants while also controlling sway and retaining structural capacity under unusual forces. The core and perimeter frame distribute those jobs across connected systems.

Why does One World Trade Center taper and change shape?
The plan begins as a 200-foot square, the same dimensions as the original World Trade Center towers. At about 190 feet above the base, the corners begin to taper into elongated isosceles triangles. The plan becomes a regular octagon around the midpoint, then transitions near the top to a smaller square rotated 45 degrees from the base.

SOM says the taper reduces wind exposure and the amount of structural steel required. A narrower upper profile presents less area to wind than a simple vertical-sided tower of the same overall height.
The shape also carries a design idea. SOM managing partner TJ Gottesdiener described the project as being about “simplicity and geometry.” The tower’s form makes its structural transition legible: a broad square base gradually becomes an octagon and then a rotated square.

How did 9/11 change the safety design?
The tower was designed while building codes were being reassessed after the September 11 attacks. ASCE reports that the project team worked with the International Building Code and other standards, reviewed international practices and incorporated lessons from emergency planning. WSP structural-design leader Ahmad Rahimian said, “We knew that current building codes would not be sufficient, so we had to design a building for a future code that had not been written yet.”
Emergency access and evacuation
WSP describes two interlinked access stairs and a separate stair dedicated to first responders. Separating responder access from occupant evacuation helps preserve a route for emergency crews while people leave the building. The design also involved an extensive review of emergency systems. Some solutions were later reflected in New York building codes, according to ASCE and WSP.

How did the site affect the foundations?
One World Trade Center extends 70 feet below grade across five underground levels. WSP reports about 500,000 square feet below grade. The foundation layout had to work around operating rail infrastructure, constraining where loads could be carried into the ground.
ASCE and WSP describe spread and strip footings with bearing capacities of up to 60 tons per square foot. The footings were positioned around the active train lines rather than laid out as if the site were clear. This made coordination with existing transit routes a fundamental part of the structural design, not simply a construction detail.

SOM describes insulated curtain-wall glass panels measuring 5 feet by 13 feet 4 inches. The panels span the full floor-to-floor height without intermediate structure, which SOM identifies as a first in skyscraper construction. The project sources report several distinct material and operating measures. SOM says more than 40 percent of construction materials used post-industrial recycled content, and that the structural steel was produced from 95 percent recycled materials. ASCE and WSP report that more than half of the cement content was replaced with industrial by-products, and also report more than 95 percent recycled structural steel. These are different material measures, not percentages that should be added together.
The building is LEED Gold certified, according to ASCE, WSP and the Port Authority. SOM also identifies a sensor-based building-management system and elevators with regenerative braking, which recovers energy during elevator operation. The Port Authority describes One World Trade Center as a 3.1-million-square-foot office building.
What the engineering choices add up to
One World Trade Center’s design ties together structural performance, a symbolic height and the practical limits of its site. Its concrete core and steel perimeter frame share structural work; its narrowing, faceted profile helps manage wind; and its below-grade foundations were arranged around operating rail lines. The height convention, safety features and sustainability measures each answer a different design constraint rather than serving as a single explanation for the tower.
