These clues warrant caution, but none proves a battery is fake on its own. If several appear—or the pack seems unsafe—stop using and charging it, then contact Ryobi or an authorized local seller.
How can I tell if my Ryobi battery is counterfeit?
Start with the seller and the battery’s packaging and markings. The FBI and Intellectual Property Rights Center list the following as general warning signs for counterfeit batteries; they are not a definitive authentication test.
1. The price or seller seems wrong
A price far below the usual market price is a reason to investigate, not proof of counterfeiting. Buy from a trusted, authorized retailer, and check that the seller named on an online listing is actually that retailer—not an unrelated third party. The FBI and Intellectual Property Rights Center battery warning identifies unusually low prices as a clue.
2. Packaging is poor or missing
The FBI flags batteries that are not properly packaged. Loose or damaged packaging, or packaging that looks unconvincing for the product, should prompt questions about where the battery came from. Packaging alone cannot establish whether it is genuine.

3. The label has misspellings or printing errors
Check for misspelled words, inconsistent or blurred printing, and other obvious errors. Compare the markings with official product information for the correct model and market; labels can vary by region, so a different layout is not automatically evidence of a fake.
4. The label is peeling or poorly attached
A label that lifts, peels, or appears carelessly applied is another warning sign listed by the FBI. Treat it as a reason to verify the seller and ask the manufacturer—not as a standalone test.

5. Manufacturer batch information is missing
The FBI advises avoiding batteries without official manufacturer batch numbers. If batch or other identification details are absent, unclear, or difficult to verify, ask Ryobi or an authorized retailer to check the pack.
What should Australian and New Zealand buyers check?
Ryobi Australia’s guidance adds market-specific checks: look for a clearly displayed Ryobi logo, buy from its named authorized retailer, Bunnings, and inspect the rating plate. Ryobi says the plate should list the product model, the RCM Australian/New Zealand compliance mark, a serial number, and Techtronic Industries Australia/New Zealand contact information. What Ryobi found in one counterfeit battery sample
In a comparison of a genuine 4Ah 18V battery with one non-genuine sample, Ryobi Australia reported a difference in overall mass. Its examination also found that half the cells in that sample appeared to be fake or dummy cells, along with poorly soldered monitoring and balancing connections. Ryobi said those observations raised performance and safety concerns.
This was a finding about one examined sample, not a prevalence statistic or a rule that all counterfeit packs have the same defects. Ryobi gives no universal weight cutoff, so weighing a battery cannot authenticate it. The internal findings are not a consumer inspection checklist: do not open or dismantle a battery to look at its cells.

Why a suspicious battery is a safety concern
Counterfeit batteries do not go through the same standardized testing as original equipment manufacturer batteries, according to the FBI and Intellectual Property Rights Center. They may perform poorly or cause overheating, fire or explosion, injury, property damage, device damage, or product failure. These are risks, not outcomes that happen with every counterfeit pack.

What to do if you suspect a fake Ryobi battery
- Stop using and charging the pack. Do not keep testing it in a tool or charger while its authenticity or condition is in doubt.
- Keep the purchase details and packaging. Save the receipt, listing or order record, seller information, and packaging so the source can be checked.
- Contact Ryobi or an authorized local retailer. Ask them to assess the battery and explain available remedy options. Authorized retailers and support routes differ by country.
For the United States, Ryobi’s support page directs warranty battery replacement requests to customer service and says batteries not under warranty can be replaced at The Home Depot. Check Ryobi’s US customer-service information for the current route.
Choosing a genuine replacement
If the pack needs replacing, match the battery to the tool’s voltage and platform, then choose capacity based on the tool’s demands and the runtime you need. Ryobi Australia lists 18V ONE+ batteries from 2Ah to 12Ah; available models and features vary by market. Its standard and HP ONE+ lines have different features, so confirm compatibility and model details in Ryobi Australia’s battery and charger range. Buy through a local authorized seller and use that market’s support route for warranty questions.
