What belongs in the trash, organics bin, or a local collection program depends on the material and your municipality; septic systems need extra care. The guidance below is based on public wastewater and government advice, not attributed to named plumbers.
12 things to keep out of drains
-
Cooking grease
Grease cools, hardens, and sticks to pipe interiors, where it can build up and cause blockages in household plumbing and city sewer pipes. Wipe small residue from pans with a paper towel before washing. For larger quantities, use a local collection or disposal option; Toronto, for example, directs residents to drop-off depots or community environment events, while Miami-Dade recommends cooling grease in a metal can before putting it in the garbage. These are local instructions, not universal rules. Toronto sewer guidance; Miami-Dade guidance.
-
Fats and cooking oils
Do not pour fats or oils into the sink, toilet, or garbage disposal, even if they are liquid when warm. They can cool in pipes and contribute to blockages. Let them cool and follow your local waste authority’s directions for disposal. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency also advises septic-system users not to pour grease or oils down a drain. EPA septic-system FAQ.
-
“Flushable” and “biodegradable” wipes
Put wipes in the garbage, not the toilet or sink. Labels such as “flushable” or “biodegradable” do not mean a product will break down quickly in a sewer or home plumbing. Toronto advises that wipes of any kind—including baby, cleaning, and bathroom wipes—belong in the garbage. Toronto sewer guidance.

-
Condoms
Put condoms in the garbage, not the toilet. They do not dissolve like toilet paper and can catch on other material in plumbing or sewer equipment.

Ask your local waste authority or pharmacy about a medication take-back option or other locally approved disposal method; there is no single disposal route established here for every community. Coffee grounds and food scraps
Keep coffee grounds and food waste out of drains, especially if your home uses a septic system. EPA says coffee grounds should not go down a drain on septic, and food waste from a garbage disposal adds solids to the tank and may increase how often it needs pumping. A disposal does not make all food waste safe for plumbing. EPA septic-system FAQ.
Why septic systems need extra care
Septic systems rely on a tank and soil absorption area rather than a municipal sewer. Material that adds solids or disrupts the system can increase maintenance needs or contribute to problems. EPA recommends putting only human waste and toilet paper down a septic toilet, and advises against draining grease, oils, coffee grounds, drain cleaners, household chemicals, paints, or paint thinners into a septic system. EPA septic-system FAQ.
Choose a disposal route that fits your home and location
- For small grease residue: Wipe cookware with a paper towel before washing. Toronto says the used towel can go in its Green Bin; organics rules differ elsewhere.
- For larger amounts of grease or oil: Follow local waste instructions. Toronto cites depots and community environment events; Miami-Dade recommends a metal can for cooled grease before garbage disposal.
- For medicines, chemicals, paint, and vehicle fluids: Check the local take-back or hazardous-waste program before disposing of them. Do not assume household trash or a drain is acceptable.
- For toilets: A useful septic-safe rule from EPA is to flush only human waste and toilet paper. EPA septic-system FAQ.
Wastewater authorities’ lists are local guidance, so check your municipality’s rules for garbage, organics, hazardous-waste collection, and drop-off locations. Miami-Dade reports that its Water and Sewer Department removes approximately 300 tons of items that should not be flushed from its system monthly; the page does not state a publication year, and the figure describes that local system rather than a national total. Miami-Dade guidance.
