The Yale Real Living touchscreen deadbolt is best suited to a door that matches its installation dimensions and a household comfortable managing access codes and battery-powered entry. Its keypad and optional Z-Wave integration are useful, but the lock has no mechanical key override: Yale warns that a lockout remains possible even with low-battery alerts and an emergency-power connection. Check the exact model and network module before buying or planning an upgrade.
What the YRD220 and YRD240 offer
Yale’s support site provides a manual for the YRD220 touchscreen deadbolt, while the YRD240 manual describes a key-free touchscreen variant. Both are part of the Real Living family; confirm the model printed inside the battery cover rather than relying on a seller’s generic listing.
The practical appeal is key-free keypad entry with programmable user codes. Yale documentation also describes a 9-volt battery jumper for emergency power and optional Z-Wave integration with the right module. These are documented features, not evidence of measured touchscreen responsiveness, long-term reliability or battery life.

- Auto-Lock for peace of mind: You didn’t forget to lock the door, your lock did it for you. Rest easy knowing that your door is locked every time you leave the house and when you go to bed at night.
- Easy to install on any door: Not so handy, Not a problem. Yale Assure locks are super easy to install and are guaranteed to fit standard doors (doors 1-¾” to 2-¼” thick. Doors under 1-⅜” require thin door kit).
- Stop hiding keys: Sharing codes is the new hide-a-key. Give unique codes to friends, family, and other people you trust, and never put a key under the doormat again.
- Upgrade to Wi-Fi with Yale Access: Use just the keypad for now, and upgrade to a smart lock whenever you’re ready. Our Yale Access Upgrade Kit (sold separately) lets you use your phone as your key.
| Door or bore measurement | Supported dimension in Yale guidance |
|---|---|
| Door thickness | 1 3/4 or 2 1/4 inches |
| Cross bore | 2 1/8 inches |
| Edge bore | 1 inch |
| Backset | 2 3/8 or 2 3/4 inches |
Measure the door and existing preparation before installation; a mismatch in bore size or backset can prevent a proper fit. Follow the model-specific manual, since the YRD240 instructions specifically call for installing with the bolt retracted and testing mechanical operation before inserting batteries. See Yale’s Real Living support materials and Yale’s touchscreen installation guidance.
Battery power and lockout planning
The Real Living guide specifies four AA alkaline batteries. Yale describes low-battery warnings and a 9-volt battery jumper as safeguards, but neither eliminates the risk of being unable to enter. Yale’s installation guide states: “While Yale has included several features to prevent lockout (9-Volt battery jumper, low battery warnings), it is still possible for a lockout situation to arise.”

It also warns: “Because this product does not have a mechanical override, Yale recommends to use this product in an environment where there are additional entry points into the dwelling.” Plan for that limitation before relying on the lock as your only way into the home. Keep fresh alkaline batteries on hand, respond to warnings promptly, and understand the model’s 9-volt emergency-power procedure in advance. The cited documentation does not establish a battery-life figure, so a replacement interval cannot be responsibly promised.
Z-Wave compatibility depends on module generation
Yale states that Z-Wave 300-series modules work with the YRD210, YRD220 and YRD240. Its compatibility FAQ distinguishes these older Real Living products from newer Assure locks: Z-Wave Plus 500 modules are for newer Assure products and are not interchangeable with older Real Living locks. Check the exact lock model and module generation before purchasing a replacement or expecting it to pair with a hub.

Do not assume Yale Access support from the product name alone. Yale’s Access upgrade compatibility list names newer Assure models—including YRD216, YRD226, YRD246 and YRD446—but does not list the YRD220 or YRD240. Verify the exact hardware and firmware with Yale before planning an upgrade. See Yale’s Z-Wave compatibility FAQ and Yale’s Access upgrade compatibility list.

The Real Living touchscreen deadbolt makes sense when the door dimensions match, keypad codes suit the household’s access needs, and you can manage battery replacement and prepare for a lockout without a mechanical key. Its optional Z-Wave capability is a benefit only when the correct 300-series module is installed and compatible with the intended setup.

It is a poor fit if you require a conventional key cylinder as a fallback, cannot provide another way into the dwelling, or are counting on compatibility with a newer Yale Access upgrade without confirming the specific hardware. The available Yale documentation establishes features and fit requirements, but not current retail value, independent reliability results or tested battery duration; those claims should not be inferred from the specifications.
