What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A Ring camera that “stopped working” may have lost power, gone offline, stopped sending alerts, or still be working without saving video. Start with Ring app → menu (☰) → Devices → select the camera → Device Health. That screen reports battery or power information, network status and, for many models, an error code. Use the symptom-specific checks below before resetting or replacing the camera.
First, identify exactly what failed
Do not factory-reset a camera until you know which function is failing. Check whether other Ring devices are online, whether your phone can browse the internet, and whether the problem appears in both the Ring app and Ring.com. Device Health also provides access to Ring System Status, although labels vary by product and app version.
| What you see | Most likely areas to check first |
|---|---|
| No light, sound or app response | Battery, outlet, adapter, breaker, wiring or hardware |
| “Offline” in the app | Power, Wi-Fi credentials, signal strength, router or Ring service status |
| Live View will not load | Offline status, weak Wi-Fi, app problem or temporary service issue |
| Live View works but no recordings appear | Ring Protect coverage, trial status, motion detection or event-history settings |
| Recordings exist but no alerts arrive | Camera notifications, Motion Zones, phone permissions, Focus or Do Not Disturb |
| Pink, black, blurry or distorted video; missing audio | Reboot, Wi-Fi stability, power quality or a device fault |
| Repeated disconnects | Weak or congested Wi-Fi, battery drain, router changes or failing hardware |
Check power before changing settings
Battery-powered cameras
- In the Ring app, open menu (☰) → Devices → your camera → Device Settings → Power Settings and note the battery percentage.
- Remove the battery and charge it with a compatible cable and adapter. Ring says a battery may take up to approximately 10 hours to fully charge: battery-performance guidance and charging instructions.
- Reinsert a removable battery until it clicks. If the percentage does not change, inspect the charging port, cable, adapter and outlet, then try another compatible battery if available.
Cold weather, heavy motion activity, frequent Live View sessions and weak Wi-Fi can increase battery consumption. Motion frequency, sensitivity, zones and linked events affect both alerts and runtime.
Plug-in cameras
- Test the wall outlet with another appliance.
- Reseat the plug and inspect the cable for cuts, bends or heat damage.
- Check smart plugs, power strips and GFCI outlets for a switched-off or tripped state.
- Use only a compatible Ring adapter or cable. A generic replacement may have the wrong voltage, amperage, connector or polarity.
Wired cameras
- Check the relevant switch, breaker, transformer and power supply.
- Confirm that the supply meets your model’s requirements; Ring’s setup guidance emphasizes matching the device’s power specifications: Ring setup troubleshooting.
- Do not open mains-voltage equipment unless you are qualified. If power is confirmed but the camera remains completely unresponsive, treat that as a possible hardware fault.
Fix an offline Ring camera
An offline device cannot provide Live View, motion alerts or event recording: Ring’s offline-device guide.

- Open the camera in the Ring app and go to Device Health.
- Review power, battery and network signal information. Under Network, choose Reconnect or Change Network, then follow the prompts.
- Confirm whether the Wi-Fi name or password, router, security settings or camera location changed.
- Restart the modem and router. Wait until ordinary internet access is restored, then reconnect the camera.
- Temporarily move the camera near the router. If it works there, range or interference is the likely cause.
All Ring devices support 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi; only some models support 5 GHz. Ring also says its products are designed for a home Wi-Fi network and do not work with a mobile-phone hotspot: Ring FAQ. If separate network names are available, test a 2.4 GHz network first. A compatible extender, Ring Chime Pro or an eero mesh system may help a camera that works near the router but not at its installed position; none will fix failed power or a defective camera.
When Live View, video or audio fails
Reboot without erasing configuration
If the camera still appears online, use Ring app → menu (☰) → Devices → camera → Device Health → Reboot This Device, then confirm and wait several minutes. Ring lists rebooting as a remedy for distorted audio, inaccessible recordings and discolored or pink video: reboot instructions.
If it is offline, power-cycle it instead: remove a removable battery for about 10 seconds and reinstall it, unplug a plug-in camera for about 10 seconds, or switch a wired camera’s appropriate power off briefly and restore it. Do not repeatedly interrupt a visible setup or firmware update.

Separate network problems from camera problems
- Test Live View while the camera is temporarily near the router.
- Note whether distortion affects Live View, saved clips or both.
- Try another authorized phone or Ring.com. If every client shows the same failure after stable power and Wi-Fi, support is more appropriate than repeated app reinstalls.
Restore motion alerts
- Open the camera’s motion settings and confirm motion detection is enabled.
- Review Motion Zones; remove zones that exclude the area you need monitored.
- Check motion sensitivity and frequency settings.
- Review Camera Modes and privacy controls for a setting that suppresses detection.
- On the phone, enable Ring notifications and required permissions. Temporarily disable Focus, Do Not Disturb, battery-saver and background-app restrictions.
- Trigger a deliberate motion event and compare the camera’s event history with the phone notification.
If an event is saved but no push message arrives, the camera is detecting motion and the phone notification path is the issue. If no event is saved, continue with the recording and plan checks below.
When recordings are missing but Live View works
Basic Ring use and Live View do not require a Ring Protect subscription. Cloud video and photo storage, plus some advanced recognition features, do require compatible plan coverage: Ring camera information and Ring Protect plans.
- Open the Ring app’s menu and check Control Center or the Protect plan area.
- Confirm that the correct camera is covered and that a trial has not expired.
- Check event history, retention and motion settings.
- Test Live View and then create a deliberate motion event.
For U.S. customers, Ring’s plans page showed Solo at $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year, Multi at $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year, and Pro at $19.99 per month or $199.99 per year before applicable tax, observed August 18, 2026. Prices and features can vary by country, device and date. Buying a plan will not normally bring an offline or unpowered camera back online; it restores eligible cloud features.

Update or repair the Ring app
- Update the Ring app and, where practical, the phone or tablet operating system.
- Force-close and reopen the app, then sign out and back in.
- Confirm you are using the account that owns the camera. Shared users may not have the owner’s billing controls.
- Check permissions for notifications, local network access, location, Bluetooth or nearby devices when requested during setup.
- Try Ring.com and another authorized device to determine whether the failure is app-specific.
- In Device Health, open Device Details → Product Name before following model-specific instructions.
Ring recommends keeping the app and mobile device current and keeping the phone close to the camera during setup: setup guidance.
Reboot versus factory reset
A reboot preserves network settings and is low risk. A factory reset clears the camera’s configuration and normally requires complete setup again, so use it only after power checks, router checks and Reconnect/Change Network have failed, or when Ring Support directs you to reset.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFactory-reset procedure
Ring’s general guidance says to hold a camera’s setup button for 20 seconds, then release it. Button placement varies: Outdoor Cam buttons are inside the battery compartment; many other cameras have the button on top. See Ring reset and power-cycle guidance.

When to stop troubleshooting and contact Ring
Contact Ring Support when a known-good battery, cable, outlet and compatible network do not help; setup fails repeatedly after a reset; the reset button does not respond; or the camera overheats, smells burnt, has water intrusion or physical damage. Gather:
- Product name and model
- Device Health status, network signal and any error code
- Battery percentage or confirmed power source
- Wi-Fi band and router changes
- Date the problem began
- Whether other Ring devices work
- Every step already attempted
Replacement is sensible only after power, Wi-Fi, app, account, reset and re-setup checks point to hardware failure. If the camera otherwise works but charging downtime is the problem, an exact-model spare battery or compatible solar or plug-in accessory may be more appropriate than a new camera. Verify compatibility before buying any accessory.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Ring camera offline while my Wi-Fi works?
The camera may have weak signal, stale Wi-Fi credentials, inadequate power or a model-specific compatibility issue. Check Device Health, reconnect the network, restart the router and test the camera near the router before resetting it.

Can a Ring camera work without a subscription?
Yes. Ring says basic use and Live View do not require Ring Protect. Eligible cloud recordings, photos and some advanced features do require a compatible plan.
Can I use a phone hotspot for Ring setup?
Ring’s FAQ says its products do not work with a mobile-phone hotspot. Use a home Wi-Fi network instead.
How long can a Ring battery take to charge?
Ring says a battery may take up to approximately 10 hours to fully charge. A cable, adapter, outlet, battery age or cold conditions can affect the result.
Should I factory-reset the camera first?
No. Reboot, power, router, Device Health and Wi-Fi reconnection checks are less disruptive. Reset only when those steps fail or Ring Support recommends it.
