There is no reliable date that suits every home each year. The headline figure—around 14 October—was domestic energy expert Llewellyn Kinch’s recommendation for 2024, not a fixed annual rule. He suggested switching on early enough to check the heating before colder weather arrives, while noting that location, the home and the people living in it all affect when heat is needed.
What date did the expert recommend?
In an article published on 13 October 2024, T3 quoted Kinch, co-founder of MakeMyHouseGreen, suggesting that people turn their heating on around 14 October 2024. His reason was to leave time to make sure the central heating works before winter: “October 14th leaves a bit of time before things get really cold to ensure that your central heating is working properly,” he told T3.
That was a dated expert suggestion, not a scientifically established switch-on day or a recommendation for every October. It does not identify the right date for your home in autumn 2026.
Why the right time varies by home
Kinch said the decision depends on factors such as location, property and weather. People who are vulnerable to cold, and households in colder parts of England and Scotland, may need to use heating earlier than others. If anyone at home is getting uncomfortably cold, a calendar date should not be treated as a reason to wait.

A separate BestHeating article gives 17 October as a suggested date, associating it with an outdoor temperature threshold of 15°C. The company says it based this on its analysis of five years of Met Office data, but also says there is no optimum switch-on date. Use the early heating check for what it is meant to do
If you are following the practical logic behind Kinch’s 2024 suggestion, treat an early switch-on as a chance to find faults before you depend on the system in colder weather—not as a requirement to heat the house continuously from a particular date.

- Turn the heating on and check whether it responds to the controls.
- Check whether the radiators or other heat emitters warm as expected. If the system does not work properly, arrange an appropriate check or repair rather than waiting for colder weather.
- Use the heating when it is needed for comfort at home, adjusting the schedule as conditions and household needs change.
What thermostat setting did Kinch suggest?
Kinch advised setting the thermostat between 18°C and 21°C while people are at home, and reducing it slightly at night or when away. T3 quoted him saying to “set your thermostat between 18-21°C during the hours when you are in the house, and reduce it slightly at night or when you’re away, to stay warm and save on energy bills.” This is his advice as reported by T3, not a universal standard established for every household.
T3 also reports Kinch’s view that keeping heating on low for longer can save money because the home does not become as cold and needs less energy to warm up again. That claim should be understood as his view, not a guaranteed cheaper schedule for every heating system or property. A thermostat or smart thermostat can help monitor and schedule heating, but neither determines the right date to switch it on, and no particular model or compatibility is established here.

Small measures that can help retain warmth
Heart’s practical suggestions include draught excluders and rugs to help keep a home warm. These can complement heating where useful, but they are not a substitute for using heat when occupants need it. Heart’s suggestions are practical measures rather than evidence of a particular saving.

Use the condition of your home and the comfort of the people in it—not an old calendar date—as your guide. If switching on early, check that the system works; then use the controls to heat the home when needed. The 14 October figure belongs to Kinch’s 2024 recommendation, while the separate 17 October figure is BestHeating’s historical-data estimate; neither settles the date for a particular home or for 2026.
