What’s the Recommended Humidity Level for a House?

The recommended indoor humidity range for most homes is 30%–50% RH. Learn how to measure it and address excess moisture or dry-air discomfort.

Aim for 30%–50% relative humidity (RH) in most homes. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends that range; it also says to keep indoor humidity below 60% if possible. For mold prevention, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) sets a stricter ceiling: no higher than 50% all day.

What does relative humidity mean?

Relative humidity compares the water vapor in the air with the amount the air can hold at its current temperature. It is expressed as a percentage, so it is a relative measure rather than a fixed quantity of water. Temperature changes can affect the reading even if the amount of moisture in the air has not changed.

How to check your home’s humidity

Use a humidity gauge, also called a hygrometer, rather than estimating by feel. EPA recommends using a humidity meter to check indoor levels. Its mold and moisture guide describes a small meter as “$10-$50”; that is a figure in the guidance, not a current retail price.

Take readings in the rooms you want to assess and pay attention to recurring high readings as well as visible condensation. A meter reports the humidity where it is placed; it cannot identify a leak or establish that mold is absent.

What to do when humidity is high

If readings are above the recommended range, look for and address moisture rather than relying on a thermostat adjustment or appliance alone. EPA advises drying damp areas promptly, repairing leaks, and reducing sources of moisture. Use bathroom or kitchen exhaust ventilation when outdoor conditions permit. Air conditioning or a dehumidifier may also help lower indoor humidity.

Condensation on windows, walls, or pipes is a sign to act: dry the area and reduce the moisture source. Persistent dampness or water intrusion needs attention at its source; changing the indoor humidity reading by itself does not repair building damage.

What to do when humidity is low

If low readings coincide with dry-air discomfort, such as a dry nose, throat, lips, or skin, a humidifier is one option. EPA cautions not to humidify above 50% RH. Standing water can support microbial growth, and some cool-mist humidifiers can disperse minerals and microorganisms. Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions and clean the unit regularly.

Why moisture control matters

Humidity guidance is practical moisture- and mold-prevention advice, not a clinical rule for diagnosing or preventing illness. CDC summarizes the Institute of Medicine’s 2004 findings that indoor mold exposure was linked with upper respiratory symptoms, cough, and wheeze in otherwise healthy people; asthma symptoms in people with asthma; and hypersensitivity pneumonitis in susceptible people. A household humidity reading alone does not establish an individual health risk or outcome.
