The right choice depends on what you are containing or deterring, fence length and condition, vegetation, soil, grounding, and available sunlight. Compare models by output joules where listed—not just advertised fence miles—and size the whole system, including its battery, panel, and grounding, for the site.
How to choose a solar fence energizer
A solar energizer uses a panel to recharge a battery, which powers the energizer. Compact integrated units are useful where utility power is unavailable and for portable or temporary fences. Remote permanent installations can use larger solar systems with a deep-cycle battery, provided the components are matched. Neither type should be assumed to work year-round in every location, especially where sunlight is limited or shaded.
Virginia Cooperative Extension’s 2025 guide says output joules are probably the best way to compare energizers. Stored joules measure energy held in the capacitor before discharge; output joules measure energy delivered by the transformer and are lower. As the guide explains, “The best way to compare energizers is probably by looking at output joules.” Its rule of thumb is about one output joule per mile of fence, but this is an estimate of anticipated losses—not a guarantee. Soil, climate, vegetation, fence construction, and resistance all affect performance. Virginia Cooperative Extension’s energizer selection and installation guide.
Manufacturer distance and acreage figures are not directly comparable across brands. They are claims tied to each maker’s assumptions; actual results depend on fence layout, vegetation, soil, grounding, and the condition of the fence.

| Model | Output / stored energy | Solar and battery | Manufacturer distance or area claim | Useful distinction |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gallagher S20 Lithium Solar Fence Energizer (G350404) | 0.15 / 0.2 joules | 3 W panel; internal lithium battery | 2-mile multiwire distance under Gallagher’s recommendation; 12 miles under ideal conditions; 40 acres listed | Maximum output voltage listed as 9.3 kV; three-year warranty. Gallagher displayed $289.99 when its page was accessed October 4, 2026; price and stock may change. Gallagher S20 specifications. |
| Patriot SolarGuard 500 | 0.5 / 0.65 joules | 9.6 W panel; internal rechargeable 12 V battery | Up to 30 miles / 100 acres | Consider it as a lower-output integrated example; distance and acreage are Patriot claims, not a guaranteed fit. Patriot SolarGuard 500 specifications. |
| Patriot SolarGuard 3500 | 3.5 / 4.6 joules | 39 W panel; internal rechargeable 12 V battery | Up to 65 miles / 200 acres | A higher-output example for larger remote applications, subject to site conditions and the maker’s requirements. Patriot SolarGuard 3500 specifications. |
For a small, portable fence
The Gallagher S20 is the most compact-output example here, with an integrated lithium battery and 3 W panel. Gallagher distinguishes its 2-mile multiwire recommendation from its 12-mile ideal-condition claim, so use the former as the more cautious point of comparison and evaluate your own fence conditions rather than treating either number as a promise.
Rank #2
- Powerful 0.7J Output Keeps Livestock Secure: Keep goats, pigs, horses and cattle safely contained with 0.7J output . LED headlamp conversion kit helps reduce escapes, Headlight upgrade / Headlight replacement bulb
For a moderate remote fence
The Patriot SolarGuard 500 provides 0.5 output joules and a 9.6 W panel. Its “up to 30 miles” and 100-acre figures are manufacturer claims; they do not establish how it will perform on a particular fence.
For a larger remote installation
The Patriot SolarGuard 3500 lists 3.5 output joules, a 39 W panel, and an internal 12 V rechargeable battery. Its larger output may suit a larger application, but the site, fence condition, and grounding still determine whether the system is appropriate.
Rank #3
- Powerful Output for Small to Medium Fences: Up to 8100V pulses, create reliable pulse power for fences up to 10 miles. Perfect for pastures, rotational/strip grazing, small farms, and gardens.
- Efficient Solar Power, Long Runtime: 5W solar panel + 12V 5Ah sealed GEL battery ensures stable operation day night. Fully charges in about 6 days and run up to 30 days without sunlight when fully charged.
- Durable & Weather-Resistant Design: IPX4 waterproof housing with high-strength ABS casing and enhanced tempered glass solar panel. Designed to withstand rain, snow, cloudy and storms for outdoor.
- Portable & Easy to Install: Compact all-in-one design (8.66 x 11.02 x 6.69 in, 5.94 lb). No tools required - simply mount on a T-post and connect to your fence. Easy to move and reposition for flexible use.
- Widely Used & Safe Use: Suitable for cattle, horses, sheep, pigs, pets, and small animals. Protects from escaping, deter predators. Battery ships disconnected for safety - easy setup with included accessories.
Match output to the animal and fence
Start with the animal and the job: containment and deterrence can have different requirements. Virginia Cooperative Extension gives ideal minimum fence voltages of 5,000 V for cattle and 7,000 V for sheep. Those are species-specific recommendations from that guide, not legal standards. Alaska Fish and Game’s separate bear-fence advice calls for at least 5,000 V and preferably 6,000–7,000 V, and recommends at least 0.5 output joules—or 0.7 stored joules if output is not listed—where possible. That is bear-deterrent guidance, not a universal minimum for livestock or other fences. Alaska Fish and Game’s bear-fence guidance.
- Estimate the actual energized fence length and wire arrangement, rather than relying on property acreage alone.
- Account for vegetation touching wires, fence breaks, soil conductivity, and the quality of connections; these add losses or reduce voltage.
- Compare output joules between products when the specification is available. Do not treat a stored-joule figure as if it were output.
- Check the product’s panel, battery, mounting, and sun requirements against the installation location and periods of poor sunlight.
Grounding, installation, and fence testing
Grounding is part of the electrical circuit and affects the system’s performance. Virginia Cooperative Extension says grounding-system size depends substantially on energizer output. Connect the energizer ground terminal to the grounding system with suitable fence or insulated lead-out wire. The guide recommends sheltered placement and, ideally, keeping the energizer more than 33 feet from utility or residential grounding systems. Do not use residential electrical wire as fence lead-out wire: ordinary Romex is rated far below energizer voltage. Virginia Cooperative Extension installation guidance.
Rank #4
- SOLAR POWER: Use this solar electric fence charger to energize up to 5 miles of electric fencing in ideal conditions, providing reliable livestock containment without requiring AC power access for remote locations
- VERSATILE MOUNTING: Featuring a built-in mounting bracket that’s compatible with T-posts, Y-posts, and round-wood posts, this cattle perimeter fence charger installs 360-degree rotation capability for optimal sun exposure
- EXTENDED OPERATION: Operate continuously for up to 2 weeks without sunlight, as the solar cattle fence energizer stores sufficient energy to provide consistent livestock protection during cloudy weather periods
- LOW IMPEDANCE: Each portable fence for cattle pasture delivers 0.15 output joules with reduced battery drain, effectively containing cattle, horses, pigs, and goats while resisting power loss from fence line weeds
- MADE IN THE USA: Fence charger undergoes full-load testing in the USA after manufacturing, with it being designed to offer protection against lightning damage for reliable performance
Soil that conducts poorly may require multiple grounding rods. Alaska Fish and Game notes that suppliers commonly recommend one or more rods at least 6 feet long for permanent fences; the appropriate system depends on the installation. Use suitable rods, clamps, and insulated lead-out wire, and follow the energizer maker’s directions.
Test voltage on the fence with a tester designed for electric fences, checking each wire. An energizer’s indicator light does not prove that every wire is working: Alaska Fish and Game notes that an indicator can blink even when a wire has a short. Find and correct shorts or poor connections, then retest the fence.
