Too Many Flies Indoors? How to Find the Source and Fix the House

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If there are suddenly dozens of flies in your house, the cause is usually one of four things: something inside is breeding them, moisture is feeding them, the building envelope is letting them in, or seasonal insects entered the walls and attic to overwinter. Spraying the adults may make the room feel better for a day, but it rarely solves the problem.

On construction and remodeling jobs, we see this most often at transition points: loose door sweeps, torn screens, gaps at utility penetrations, damp crawl spaces, clogged gutters, floor drains, laundry drains, and attic or soffit openings. A clean house can still have a fly problem if the drain line, threshold, vent, or wall cavity is giving insects what they need.

The fastest way to fix it is to identify the fly first, then inspect the right part of the house. Tiny fuzzy flies at a bathroom sink point to a different repair than slow, large flies at upstairs windows in March. This guide walks through the practical diagnosis, the building-related fixes, realistic 2026 costs, and when to call a pest professional, plumber, or contractor.

Start by Identifying the Fly

Do not start with traps. Start with identification. Flies are not all using the same food source, entry point, or breeding area.

Common house flies and filth flies

House flies are usually medium-sized, active, and fast. They gather around food residue, garbage, pet waste, decaying organic matter, and warm kitchens. If you are seeing them during the day near trash cans, doors, counters, or food prep areas, the first suspects are sanitation and exterior attractants.

#1 Best Overall

The key detail is that house flies need breeding material. Killing adult flies without removing the garbage, waste, spoiled food, or residue is like mopping around a leaking pipe. You may reduce the symptom, but the source is still working.

Fruit flies

Fruit flies are small, tan to brown, and often hover around produce, compost pails, recycling bins, beverage cans, sink areas, and sticky spills. They can build up fast because fermenting material gives them both food and breeding conditions.

Look beyond the fruit bowl. We have found fly sources in the bottom of pull-out trash cabinets, under refrigerator edges, behind toe kicks, in recycling bins, and in mop buckets that looked clean from above.

Drain flies

Drain flies, also called moth flies or filter flies, are tiny, fuzzy, and slow. They often rest on bathroom walls, shower surrounds, laundry room walls, basement walls, or near floor drains. They breed in wet organic buildup, commonly called biofilm, inside drains and other damp areas.

Bleach poured down the drain is not a reliable fix because larvae and eggs may be living in buildup above the waterline. The repair is usually mechanical cleaning: brushing the drain walls, cleaning overflow ports, flushing loosened material, and correcting any slow drainage or chronic moisture.

Fungus gnats

Fungus gnats are tiny, dark, delicate-looking flies often found around houseplants. Their source is usually wet potting soil. If the flies rise when you disturb a plant, the fix is irrigation control, soil drying, and sometimes replacing heavily contaminated soil.

Cluster flies

Cluster flies are larger, sluggish flies that often appear at windows, especially on upper floors, in late winter, spring, or on warm winter days. They are not usually breeding in your kitchen. They commonly enter homes in late summer or fall through gaps at rooflines, trim, siding, soffits, attic vents, and window or door frames, then overwinter in wall and attic spaces.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For cluster flies, the fix is exclusion before they enter. Interior spraying after they are already in the walls is usually disappointing. Late summer and early fall sealing work matters most.

Why Flies Suddenly Show Up Indoors

A sudden fly problem usually means a condition changed. The trash sat longer than usual. A screen tore. A door sweep pulled away. A drain slowed down. A plumbing trap dried out. A gutter clogged and left organic sludge near the house. A hidden leak made a damp wall or floor cavity. Or, in the case of cluster flies, outdoor insects found a seasonal entry route into the structure.

Good fly control follows the same logic as integrated pest management: identify the pest, monitor where it appears, remove the conditions supporting it, block entry, and use pesticides only when appropriate. That sequence matters. If you spray first and inspect last, you can spend money without fixing the reason flies are there.

Walk the house by zones. Kitchens and trash areas point to food residue. Bathrooms, laundry rooms, basements, slab floors, and utility rooms point to drains or moisture. Upper-story windows and attic-adjacent rooms point to exterior gaps. Garage entries and patio doors point to screens, thresholds, and door closers.

Room-by-Room Source Checklist

Kitchen

Check the trash can, recycling bin, compost pail, fruit bowl, pantry floor, under appliances, sink strainer, garbage disposal, dishwasher air gap, and cabinet base under the sink. Even a small amount of juice, meat packaging residue, or fermenting produce can support a large number of flies.

Clean the trash can itself, not just the bag. Wash the lid, rim, foot pedal area, and bottom. If the can sits inside a cabinet, clean the cabinet floor and sidewalls. For recycling, rinse cans and bottles or move recycling outdoors in a lidded container.

Bathrooms

If flies are near a sink, tub, shower, or toilet, inspect the drain and the surrounding floor. Drain flies can breed in sink overflows, shower drains, tub drains, floor drains, and plumbing areas with constant dampness. A loose toilet wax ring can create odor and moisture at the floor even before you see staining.

Run water in rarely used fixtures. An unused trap can dry out, allowing sewer gas and insects to move through the opening. If a fixture repeatedly dries out, that is a maintenance issue; if water disappears quickly, have a plumber evaluate the trap or drain configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Laundry rooms and basements

Laundry rooms combine moisture, lint, floor drains, utility sinks, and wall penetrations. Basements add sump pits, condensate drains, exposed plumbing, and sometimes crawl-space access. Check for slow floor drains, lint buildup, wet cardboard, damp storage, and standing water around mechanical equipment.

If a fly problem is strongest in the basement or near a slab, pay attention. A cracked drain line, open cleanout, failed trap, or damp subfloor assembly can keep producing insects even when the visible surfaces are clean.

Attics, upper floors, and sunny windows

Large sluggish flies at upper windows often mean overwintering insects are emerging from wall or attic spaces. Inspect exterior trim, siding joints, soffit returns, fascia intersections, attic vents, roof returns, window casing, and utility penetrations. Gaps as small as 1/8 inch can be enough for many insects to enter.

Do this inspection before fall if the problem repeats every year. Once insects are inside wall cavities, you are mostly managing symptoms until the season passes.

The Drain Fly Test That Actually Helps

For suspected drain flies, use the tape-over-drain test. Before bed, dry the drain rim and place clear tape sticky-side down over part of the drain opening. Leave small gaps so air can still move. In the morning, check whether small fuzzy flies are stuck to the tape.

Test more than one drain. Bathroom sinks, showers, tubs, laundry drains, utility sinks, and basement floor drains are all candidates. If the tape catches adults, clean that drain mechanically. Remove the drain cover when possible, scrub the upper pipe walls and overflow passage with a drain brush, clean the stopper assembly, flush with hot water, and repeat for several days if activity continues.

If the drain smells strongly of sewer gas, backs up, gurgles, or remains slow after cleaning, stop treating it as a simple pest problem. That is when plumbing diagnosis matters. Drain cleaning commonly costs about $100 to $300 in 2026. Minor drain-pipe repairs may run about $100 to $800 or $200 to $1,200 depending on the scope and source. Leaking pipe repairs can range from about $150 to $4,700, with an average around $500. Major sewer or under-slab work can reach $3,000 to $15,000 or more.

Building-Envelope Fixes That Stop Flies From Getting In

For a contractor, flies are often an air-sealing and moisture-management clue. The same defects that let insects in can also let drafts, water, and humid air into the building.

Doors and thresholds

Stand inside during daylight and look under exterior doors. If you can see light, insects can enter. Check the main entry, patio door, garage-to-house door, basement walkout, and mudroom doors. A door sweep should make consistent contact with the threshold without dragging so hard that the door fails to latch.

A basic door sweep can be a small DIY repair, but professional 2026 pricing varies. Some contractor guides place installation around $45 to $120 per door, while Homewyse-style estimates can run about $142 to $337 per door depending on alignment, threshold condition, material, and labor minimums.

If the door slab is warped, the jamb is racked, or the threshold is damaged, replacing the sweep alone may not fix the gap. That is a carpentry repair, not a pest-control repair.

Window and door screens

Inspect screens from the outside. Torn corners, loose spline, bent frames, missing screens, and gaps around storm windows are common entry points. For windows used regularly in warm weather, specify durable mesh and tight frames rather than the cheapest replacement screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DIY screen replacement often costs about $25 to $50 per screen. Professional replacement commonly ranges from about $75 to $200 or more per screen, and premium or custom work can run higher, with some 2026 cost guides showing $147 to $516 per screen. Whole-house screen work may run about $500 to $800 DIY or $1,200 to $2,500 professionally, depending on window count, mesh, frame condition, access, and local labor.

Screen doors vary even more. A basic screen door installation may be a few hundred dollars, while broader 2026 consumer ranges run about $100 to $1,500 depending on whether the door is sliding, retractable, security-rated, or requires frame repair. Homewyse lists roughly $522 to $656 per door for a basic install in May 2026.

Caulking and penetrations

Walk the exterior and look for gaps at hose bibs, electrical penetrations, cable lines, HVAC linesets, dryer vents, siding joints, trim returns, light fixtures, and foundation-to-wall transitions. Use the right sealant for the substrate: exterior-grade polyurethane, high-quality acrylic latex with silicone, or specialty sealant where movement and weather exposure require it.

Exterior perimeter caulking is commonly estimated around $250 to $400 per 100 linear feet, with an average near $325. Cost depends on access, prep, removal of failed sealant, height, finish requirements, and whether trim or siding repairs are needed first.

Attic, soffit, and vent details

For recurring cluster flies, focus high on the house: eaves, soffits, fascia, attic vents, dormers, roof returns, rake boards, and upper window trim. These are the routes overwintering insects use before they show up at interior windows months later.

Do not block required ventilation while sealing. Attics, crawl spaces, and enclosed patio covers often rely on code-compliant venting and screened openings. Use proper insect screen, vent covers, baffles, and air-sealing methods that preserve ventilation and drainage. When work affects attic ventilation, roof assemblies, additions, or enclosed patio structures, follow the local residential code and permit requirements.

Moisture Problems That Keep Flies Coming Back

Persistent flies near bathrooms, laundry rooms, basements, slab floors, or crawl spaces deserve a moisture inspection. Construction defects and plumbing failures can create fly habitat where homeowners cannot see it.

Look for these red flags: soft flooring around toilets, musty odor, staining at baseboards, recurring drain flies after cleaning, gurgling drains, slow drains, wet insulation, standing water in crawl spaces, condensation on pipes, damp drywall near plumbing walls, and flies returning to the same room after multiple treatments.

Common sources include leaking sink traps, failed toilet wax rings, cracked drain fittings, open cleanouts, broken underground drain lines, dry traps, clogged condensate lines, wet crawl-space soil, clogged gutters, and negative grading that pushes water toward the foundation.

From a building standpoint, the fix may be simple or serious. Cleaning a clogged drain may cost $100 to $300. Replacing weatherstripping may run about $132 to $436 per project, with some whole-home estimates around $500 to $550. Correcting a damaged drain line or leak can be much more expensive. If the issue is under a slab, behind finished walls, or connected to sewer piping, get a plumber involved before you keep paying for pest treatments.

What Fly Fixes Cost in 2026

The cheapest fix is the one that matches the actual source. A $12 drain brush can solve the right problem. A $300 pest visit can fail if the source is a broken drain line. Use the numbers below as planning ranges, not quotes.

When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro

Good DIY situations

DIY is reasonable when the source is obvious and accessible. Examples include fruit flies around produce, a dirty trash can, a torn first-floor screen, a small door sweep gap, fungus gnats in overwatered plants, or drain flies confirmed in a sink drain that can be cleaned mechanically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical DIY kit is simple: nitrile gloves, trash-bin cleaner, a stiff drain brush, clear tape, basic sticky traps, exterior-rated caulk, replacement screen spline, screen mesh, and a properly sized door sweep. Most homeowners can handle these repairs for under $10 to $50 in materials if no carpentry or plumbing defect is involved.

Call a pest professional

Hire a pest professional when you cannot identify the fly, the infestation is spreading across multiple rooms, adult flies keep returning after sanitation and drain cleaning, or you suspect cluster flies in attic and wall spaces. A good pest professional should identify the species, point to likely sources, and recommend exclusion or sanitation steps rather than only applying pesticide.

Expect a one-time general pest-control visit to commonly run about $50 to $500 in 2026, with typical averages around $171 to $180. Prevention plans often land around $44 to $70 per month depending on the home, region, pest pressure, frequency, and severity.

Call a plumber

Bring in a plumber when flies are tied to sewer odor, repeated drain activity, slow drains, floor drains, slab areas, gurgling, backups, wet flooring, or suspected hidden leaks. If drain flies keep appearing after proper mechanical cleaning, the drain may not be the only problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Call a contractor

Call a contractor when the problem is structural or envelope-related: rotted trim, damaged thresholds, misaligned exterior doors, failed siding joints, soffit gaps, damaged fascia, crawl-space moisture, poor grading, or repairs that require opening and restoring finished assemblies. Pest control can reduce the insects, but it cannot rebuild a failed threshold or seal a poorly detailed soffit return.

Safety, Code, and Pesticide Notes

Use pesticides carefully and only for the pest and location listed on the label. More product does not mean better control, especially indoors. Keep sprays away from food prep surfaces, children, pets, HVAC returns, and open flames. If you are using fly lights, place them away from exterior doors and windows so they do not draw insects deeper into the house.

Do not seal vents blindly. Attics, crawl spaces, dryer vents, combustion appliances, and enclosed exterior structures may require specific clearances, drainage, air movement, or screened openings. Insect exclusion should preserve the ventilation and safety function of the assembly.

For remodeling, additions, and patio enclosures, plan insect control into the build. Specify tight-fitting screens, self-closing screen doors, durable thresholds, sealed utility penetrations, cleanable drain layouts, accessible plumbing cleanouts, and exterior trash or compost locations away from frequently used doors. These details cost less during construction than after finishes are installed.

After 48 hours: If activity drops sharply, keep cleaning and exclusion work going for a week. If activity continues at the same level, bring in the right professional based on the evidence: pest pro for identification and treatment, plumber for drains and moisture, contractor for envelope defects.

The Bottom Line

Flies in the house are rarely just a housekeeping problem. They are a source problem. Sometimes the source is a trash can or fruit bowl. Sometimes it is drain biofilm, wet potting soil, a torn screen, a door gap, a clogged gutter, a hidden leak, or an attic entry point that opened months before the flies appeared.

The right repair starts with the right diagnosis. Identify the fly, inspect the room where it appears, remove breeding material, clean drains mechanically, seal the building envelope, and bring in a professional when the evidence points to plumbing, moisture, or structural gaps. That approach costs less than repeated spraying and leaves the house better built against the next season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are there suddenly so many flies in my house?

A sudden fly problem usually means a breeding source or entry point changed. Common causes include garbage, overripe produce, dirty recycling, drain buildup, wet plant soil, a torn screen, a door gap, or seasonal cluster flies entering through attic and soffit gaps.

How do I know if I have drain flies?

Drain flies are tiny, fuzzy, slow-moving flies often found near sinks, showers, laundry rooms, or floor drains. To confirm them, place clear tape sticky-side down over part of the drain overnight, leaving small air gaps. If flies are stuck to the tape in the morning, that drain is a likely source.

Will bleach kill drain flies?

Bleach may kill some adults or surface organisms, but it often misses eggs and larvae in biofilm above the waterline. The more reliable fix is mechanical cleaning with a drain brush, cleaning the stopper and overflow, flushing the drain, and correcting slow drainage or leaks.

Why do flies keep appearing at my windows in winter or spring?

Large sluggish flies at sunny windows in winter or spring are often cluster flies. They commonly enter in late summer or fall through gaps at siding, trim, soffits, attic vents, and roofline details, then emerge indoors when temperatures change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I call a professional for flies?

Call a pest professional if you cannot identify the fly or the problem spreads across rooms. Call a plumber if flies are near drains, sewer odor, slow drains, wet floors, or slab areas. Call a contractor for damaged thresholds, failed screens, soffit gaps, siding penetrations, or moisture-damaged assemblies.
