What’s the Difference Between Silicon Solar Panels and Emerging Solar-Cell Technologies?

Silicon remains the practical baseline for most building projects. Emerging perovskite, tandem and thin-film technologies offer potential advantages, but lab records do not yet establish retail-module performance, lifetime or project economics.

Silicon solar panels are the mature, widely available choice for most construction projects. Emerging technologies—including perovskite, tandem, and other thin-film cells—may offer higher research-cell efficiency or lighter form factors, but most do not yet have silicon’s combination of manufacturing scale, field history, certification, and established warranties. A laboratory efficiency record is not the same as a commercial panel rating or a lower-cost building installation.

How the technologies turn sunlight into electricity

Crystalline silicon: the established baseline

A conventional silicon panel uses crystalline semiconductor wafers to convert sunlight into electricity. Silicon is the predominant commercial solar-cell technology, according to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Commercial improvements such as TOPCon, heterojunction, n-type, and back-contact designs refine silicon cells; they are not separate emerging absorber families.

Perovskites: thin, tunable absorbers

Perovskites are a family of materials used as thin-film light absorbers. Their composition can be adjusted to absorb different wavelengths, which makes them promising as standalone cells and as the top layer in a tandem device. DOE says perovskite research has made remarkable progress, while identifying durability as critical to commercial products.

Tandems: stacked absorbers

A tandem cell stacks two light-absorbing layers so they can use different parts of the solar spectrum. The leading high-efficiency research route pairs a perovskite top cell with a silicon bottom cell. The stack keeps silicon in the device but adds new manufacturing, interconnection, yield, and reliability challenges.

Other emerging and thin-film families

Cadmium telluride (CdTe) and copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS, also reported as CIS) are thin-film technologies with commercial deployments. Organic photovoltaics (OPV), III-V cells, quantum-dot concepts, and other designs are being explored for specialized properties such as flexibility or very high efficiency in particular applications. They should not be treated as one interchangeable category: their materials, manufacturing, durability, and commercial maturity differ.

Efficiency records are not retail-panel comparisons

Record cell efficiencies show what a technology may eventually achieve; they do not tell a builder how much power a finished module will produce on a roof. Cell and module results use different boundaries, and actual project energy also depends on system design, site conditions, and operating performance.

Technology or result Reported efficiency What the figure represents
Single-junction perovskite 26.1% DOE-cited research-device record as of April 21, 2024; not a typical retail-module rating.
Perovskite-silicon tandem 33.9% DOE-cited tandem record as of April 21, 2024; a research result, not an ordinary commercial module specification.
Silicon-based tandem 34.6% Experimental result in 2024, reported in the IEA PVPS 2025 trends report; not a typical product rating.
CdTe 19.9% Cell-efficiency figure listed in the IEA PVPS 2025 Trends report; not a universal module value.
CIGS/CIS 19.2% Cell-efficiency figure listed in the IEA PVPS 2025 Trends report; not a universal module value.
Organic photovoltaics 14% Cell-efficiency figure listed in the IEA PVPS 2025 Trends report.

The distinctions matter in construction decisions. A higher cell percentage may reduce the area needed for a given rated output, but it does not by itself establish annual energy yield, installed cost, or lifetime value. Compare commercial module specifications and complete system proposals on the same basis.

What is established about durability—and what is not

Silicon benefits from decades of deployment and a mature ecosystem of manufacturers, installers, certification, and field experience. Emerging cells have more to prove outdoors, especially over large areas and long periods. For perovskites, concerns include moisture, oxygen, ultraviolet exposure, ion migration, encapsulation, lead management, and reproducible large-area manufacturing. These are engineering and commercialization challenges, not proof that every design will fail.

A DOE Perovskite Accelerated Testing and Reliability (PACT) milestone illustrates both promise and the evidence gap: approximately 25 cm² minimodules achieved 15–18% aperture-area efficiency and had not fallen to 80% of their initial performance after five months outdoors. That is encouraging early testing, but five months does not establish decades of field life or support the warranty record expected for a building project.

For any proposed panel, check the manufacturer’s published product and performance warranties, degradation terms, applicable certifications, and the installer’s willingness to support the system. Do not infer long-term reliability from a cell record or a short-duration outdoor test.

How the options differ for a building project

Decision factor Crystalline silicon Perovskite and tandem research pathways Other thin films and niche cells
Availability and manufacturing Predominant commercial platform with established supply and installation channels. Many products remain in research, pilot, or demonstration stages; broad availability and supply scale are not established by research records. CdTe and CIGS have commercial deployments; OPV and other concepts are more specialized, with scale varying by technology.
Form factor Conventional rigid modules are familiar to roof and ground-mount projects. Thin absorber layers may enable new designs, but a tandem’s silicon substrate means it is not automatically a lightweight or flexible panel. Some thin films can support lighter or flexible designs; suitability depends on the specific product.
Temperature and low-light performance Compare the exact module’s temperature coefficient and relevant performance data. Do not assume a research-cell efficiency advantage predicts output in a project’s operating conditions. Performance varies by material and product; request comparable module-level data.
Lifetime, certification, and warranty evidence Established field experience and commercial warranty ecosystem. Long outdoor lifetime, encapsulation performance, large-area stability, and bankable warranty history remain key development needs. Evidence is technology- and product-specific; confirm certification and warranty terms for the actual module.
Materials, recycling, and project economics Use the product’s material, end-of-life, and recycling information when comparing bids. Perovskite compositions raise lead-management questions; installed cost and recycling arrangements must be assessed for the actual product. Material use and supply-chain profiles differ; compare documented product information rather than assuming all thin films share the same impact.

There is no single efficiency percentage that settles levelized cost of electricity (LCOE). A fair project comparison needs installed price, expected energy production, system lifetime, maintenance assumptions, degradation, financing, and any site-specific construction costs. The available evidence here does not establish comparable module-level lifetime costs across these technologies.

  1. Compare module ratings, not cell records. Use the rated power and module efficiency shown on the actual product datasheet.
  2. Check site fit. Confirm dimensions, weight, mounting compatibility, wind and snow requirements where applicable, and the available roof or ground area.
  3. Review operating and warranty terms. Compare the temperature coefficient, degradation rate, product warranty, performance warranty, and the conditions needed to make a claim.
  4. Confirm electrical compatibility. Verify connectors, voltage and current limits, inverter or charge-controller compatibility, and the installer’s system design.
  5. Ask for project-level economics. Compare expected production and installed cost on consistent assumptions rather than using a headline lab percentage as a proxy for savings.
  6. Verify certification and support. Ask which certifications apply to the exact module and who will provide installation, service, and warranty support.

Product listings for a 100 W monocrystalline panel or a monocrystalline panel kit can be relevant to small off-grid use, but wattage, connectors, dimensions, and warranties vary by listing. A research perovskite cell or tandem result should not be mistaken for a standard marketplace panel available for routine construction procurement.

Where emerging technology may fit next

Perovskite-silicon tandems have a compelling efficiency pathway, but commercial adoption depends on more than setting a record: manufacturers must demonstrate repeatable production, reliable interconnection and encapsulation, durable modules, certification, warranty support, and competitive installed economics. Thin films may also be useful where weight or flexibility matters, provided a specific product meets the project’s structural and service-life needs.

NREL’s 2024 tandem-commercialization roadmap cites a projection of 75 terawatts of photovoltaic capacity by 2050. That is a long-range projection, not a forecast of which cell technology will dominate or when a particular product will be available to builders.
