Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Two water pitchers in this guide make manufacturer claims covering specific PFAS compounds and chlorine-related taste or odor: the Philips PFAS Pro dispenser with its ADD569 cartridge, and the LifeStraw Home Essential 10-Cup pitcher. Those claims are not proof that a pitcher removes every PFAS compound or every possible source of odor. Before choosing, verify the exact model and cartridge in a certification directory, check your water utility’s PFAS results, and plan to replace the filter on schedule.
What to check before buying a pitcher for PFAS
PFAS is a broad group of chemicals. A claim for PFOA and PFOS applies to those named compounds; it does not establish reduction of all PFAS. Some certification listings distinguish between PFOA reduction and a broader Total PFAS claim, so check the actual scope rather than relying on a general phrase such as “PFAS filter.”
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency advises consumers to look for NSF/ANSI 53 or NSF/ANSI 58 certification for PFAS reduction, then check the certifier’s directory if they are unsure what a claim covers. NSF’s guidance includes pitcher-filter categories for PFOA/PFOS and chlorine reduction. Certification is tied to the listed product and claim, not automatically to every product from a brand or every cartridge that fits a pitcher.
There is an important qualification: EPA guidance published in April 2024 said then-current PFAS filter certifications did not indicate that a filter would reduce PFAS to the levels in EPA’s newly set drinking-water standard. A certification claim is not a guarantee that filtered water meets every EPA standard or that all PFAS are removed.

Pitchers with documented PFAS and odor-related claims
| Product and cartridge | PFAS claim | Chlorine, taste, or odor claim | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Philips PFAS Pro water dispenser ADD5913WH/37, using ADD569 cartridge | Philips says the ADD569 cartridge is certified for PFOA/PFOS reduction under NSF/ANSI 53. | Philips says the cartridge is certified for chlorine reduction under NSF/ANSI 42. | Confirm the exact dispenser and ADD569 cartridge listing and claims in the certification directory. The cited claims cover PFOA/PFOS, not all PFAS. Philips describes the dispenser as 4.8 L. |
| LifeStraw Home Essential 10-Cup pitcher | LifeStraw says the pitcher reduces PFAS, including PFOA and PFOS, and states that it meets NSF 53 for PFOA/PFOS. | LifeStraw says its carbon-and-ion-exchange filter reduces chlorine and odors and meets NSF 42 for chlorine. | Check the exact model and claim in a certifier directory. The listed standard claims should not be broadened to all PFAS or every odor source. |
These are manufacturer descriptions, not a head-to-head independent performance ranking. The available product information does not establish which pitcher removes more PFAS in real-world use, nor does it support ranking their lifetime costs.
What chlorine and odor claims mean
Chlorine reduction is a relevant, specific claim for water with chlorine-related taste or smell. It does not promise to remove every odor: odors can have different causes, and the cited product claims do not establish reduction of all of them. Philips identifies NSF/ANSI 42 chlorine reduction for the PFAS Pro cartridge. LifeStraw says its carbon-and-ion-exchange filter reduces chlorine and odors, with an NSF 42 claim for chlorine.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
Read a claim at its stated scope. “Chlorine reduction” is not the same as a general guarantee of better taste under every water condition, and an odor statement from a manufacturer should not be treated as certification for every odor compound.
How to verify a claim and match it to your water
- Identify the exact product and cartridge. Note the pitcher or dispenser model and the replacement cartridge model. For the Philips example, that means ADD5913WH/37 and ADD569; for LifeStraw, check the specific Home Essential pitcher and compatible replacement filter.
- Look for the named standard and contaminant. EPA recommends checking packaging for NSF/ANSI 53 or NSF/ANSI 58 for PFAS reduction. Find out whether the stated claim is for PFOA/PFOS or a broader claim such as Total PFAS.
- Check the certifier’s current directory entry. EPA advises checking the certification body’s directory if uncertain. NSF’s product listings include NSF/ANSI 53 claims for PFOA and Total PFAS reduction; its contaminant-claims guide also points to pitcher categories for PFOA/PFOS and chlorine. Match the directory entry to the exact model and claim rather than assuming a marketing statement establishes certification.
- Check local water information. Ask your water provider which PFAS, if any, are present, and review its consumer water information. EPA also directs consumers to public water-system data tools. A product claim is most useful when you know which contaminants you are trying to reduce.
- Choose a filter you can maintain. Compare the cartridge’s stated capacity and replacement schedule with your household’s use, and follow the maker’s instructions for the exact cartridge.
Replacement schedules affect performance
EPA warns that filters are effective only when maintained according to the manufacturer’s instructions and says overdue replacement can increase PFAS exposure risk. A cartridge’s service-life figure is a product specification, not a promise that every household will reach the same calendar interval: water quality and usage matter, so follow the instructions for your specific filter.
