It is not the same as the drive—the slot or recess used to turn the screw. To choose correctly, compare the head profile and drive alongside the screw’s dimensions, material, thread, substrate, hole preparation, installation conditions, and required specification.
Head style and drive style are different
The head style is the exterior profile above the shank: for example, pan, flat, oval, truss, round, fillister, or external hex. The drive style is the feature used to rotate the fastener, such as a slotted, Phillips, six-lobe, or square recess. “Phillips” identifies a drive, not a head shape; a screw can have a Phillips drive with a pan, flat, or other head.
Specifications also treat these as separate attributes. SAE J82_201301, for example, covers slotted and recessed machine screws across several head forms, including flat countersunk, oval countersunk, pan, fillister, hex, and hex-washer heads. Its stated scope is two grades of carbon-steel machine screws in sizes No. 4 through 3/4 inch for automotive and related industries; the listing says dimensions are covered by ASME B18.6.3. It is not a specification for every kind of screw. SAE’s J82_201301 listing identifies the standard as stabilized.
Common screw head profiles
Flat or countersunk
A flat head has a conical underside and a comparatively flat top. In a matching countersunk hole, it is intended to seat flush with the work surface. Flushness depends on the countersink angle and depth matching the fastener, as well as the material and installation; a flat head will not automatically finish flush in an ordinary, unprepared hole. Stanley notes the profile’s use where a finished surface and flush fastening unit are wanted, as well as its centering potential in a countersink. ISO 2009:2011 specifies a product-grade-A family of slotted countersunk flat-head screws with M1.6–M10 threads; ISO reports that edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2026 and remains current. See ISO 2009:2011.

Pan
A pan head is low and broad, with a rounded or gently domed top and a flat bearing underside in common descriptions. It remains raised above the surface rather than seating as a countersunk head does. Stanley describes it as low and large in diameter, with a relatively high perimeter. ISO 1580:2011 specifies product-grade-A slotted pan-head screws with M1.6–M10 threads; ISO reports the edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2026 and remains current. See ISO 1580:2011.
Oval or raised countersunk
An oval head combines an angled underside, which can seat in a countersink, with a rounded top that remains visible above the surface. Stanley describes it as a flat head with an added rounded upper surface for appearance; Packer likewise notes that the rounded portion sits proud after installation.

- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
Truss
A truss head is low, wide, and rounded, with a relatively broad bearing area. Stanley describes it as useful for covering large-diameter clearance holes in sheet metal where some assembly tolerance is needed; Packer describes the wider profile as useful on thin materials. These are application examples, not load ratings. Actual suitability depends on the screw and the joined materials.
Round
A round head has a taller, more distinctly domed visible cap. Packer describes it as decorative and similar to a thicker pan head. Stanley says round heads were historically widely used and that Stanley does not recommend them for new designs; that is the manufacturer’s guidance, not a universal prohibition or standard.

Fillister
A fillister head is relatively narrow in diameter and tall. The height can allow a deeper slot, while the narrower profile can be useful where a screw is assembled close to a flange or raised surface. Check the actual dimensions and surrounding clearance rather than relying on the profile name alone.
External hex and hex-washer
An external hex head has six outside faces for a wrench or suitable socket; this is different from a screw with an internal hex recess. A hex-washer head adds an integral washer-like base. Packer describes the wrenching faces and larger bearing surface, while Stanley says the washer section can help protect the assembly finish from wrench damage. Tool access and the assembly geometry still need to be checked.

Binding, washer, and bugle profiles
These specialty profiles are named for their geometry, but the name alone does not establish that a screw is suitable for a particular job. Stanley describes an undercut binding head for binding stranded wire in electrical or radio work, and washer heads for added bearing area. Packer describes a bugle head’s curved transition under the head as helping it sink into drywall without tearing the paper surface. Treat that drywall use as a product-specific application description, not a guarantee for every panel or substrate.

| Assembly need | Profiles to consider | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Flush finish | Flat/countersunk | Matching countersink angle and depth, and the material’s ability to accept the countersink. |
| Raised, broad bearing surface | Pan, truss, washer-style | Head diameter, bearing area, joined material, and whether a raised head is acceptable. |
| Visible rounded finish with countersinking | Oval/raised countersunk | How far the rounded top should project and whether the countersink matches. |
| Limited clearance near flanges or raised features | Fillister may be relevant | Actual head height, diameter, tool access, and clearance in the assembly. |
| Wrench or socket access from outside the head | External hex or hex-washer | Available swing or socket clearance, bearing surface, and finish protection. |
These profiles are starting points for comparison, not performance rankings. A wider or taller head does not by itself establish strength, holding capacity, or suitability. The screw’s dimensions, material, thread, substrate, hole geometry, drive, and installation conditions matter too.

Specify the complete fastener, not just its head
Before ordering or installing, identify the details needed to match the drawing, application, or governing specification:
- Head style and dimensions: Record the profile and relevant head diameter and height.
- Drive: Name the slot, recess, or external wrenching shape separately, and use a matching tool.
- Thread and size: Confirm the specified diameter, length, and thread form rather than inferring them from the head.
- Material, grade, and finish: Match the project’s mechanical and environmental requirements.
- Substrate and hole preparation: Check whether the material and hole are compatible with the head and intended seating; countersunk heads require suitable countersink geometry.
- Installation and access: Account for tool clearance, nearby flanges, and the conditions under which the fastener will be installed.
- Applicable standard or drawing: Use the governing specification where one applies. A head label alone is incomplete: SAE J82_201301, for instance, has a defined machine-screw scope and points to ASME B18.6.3 for dimensions.
For a specific assembly, use the fastener callout and engineering requirements rather than selecting by appearance alone. Stanley’s head-style reference and Packer’s guide to screw heads and drive types illustrate common profiles and application examples; neither profile names nor general examples replace the relevant specification.
