The best-documented plants that truly flower underground are Australia’s underground orchids in the genus Rhizanthella. Their fleshy flower heads carry delicate cream-to-pink bracts, but the plants are rarely seen: depending on the species, the flowers remain beneath the soil or appear close to its surface. That is different from ordinary garden plants whose bulbs, roots, tubers, or rhizomes are underground while their flowers bloom in the open.
What does “plants that grow underground” mean?
The phrase can describe two very different things. Many familiar plants keep storage organs or stems—such as bulbs, tubers, and rhizomes—below ground, then send leaves or flowers above it. A much rarer phenomenon is a plant whose flowers themselves form underground. This article focuses on that second meaning, especially the Australian orchid genus Rhizanthella.
Orchids are diverse, and most are not underground-flowering plants; they can be terrestrial or grow on other plants. Cambridge University Botanic Garden’s overview of orchids offers general context on that diversity, but underground flowering is an exceptional adaptation, not a typical orchid trait.
Why are Rhizanthella orchids considered so beautiful?
The western underground orchid, Rhizanthella gardneri, has a fleshy flower head with many flowers held in a spiral and surrounded by floral bracts. Descriptions characterize the flowers as cream to reddish and the bracts as cream or pinkish cream. The effect is less like a conspicuous garden bloom than a small, intricate floral structure glimpsed at or just below the soil surface. Beauty is subjective; the orchid’s unusual form and hidden setting are part of its appeal.

Because most of the plant is concealed, people rarely get a view of an entire specimen in the wild. The Orchids.org species description details its flower head and spiral arrangement, while the Australian government’s interim recovery plan for 2003–2008 describes the flowers and bracts. Those sources describe form, not a large flower held high above ground.
How can an orchid live without sunlight?
R. gardneri has no green parts and cannot photosynthesize. Instead, it is mycoheterotrophic: it obtains resources through an association with fungi rather than making its own food from sunlight. Its underground life is therefore not simply a matter of keeping a flower sheltered beneath the soil; its nutrition is tied to that fungal relationship.

University of Western Australia research news reported that the orchid has retained chloroplasts despite losing many chloroplast genes. The study-specific finding was that “compared with normal plants, 70 per cent of the genes in the chloroplast have been lost,” said lead researcher Dr Etienne Delannoy. That 70 per cent figure concerns R. gardneri in the reported study, not underground plants generally. The University of Western Australia published the finding on 7 February 2011.
Do all underground orchids stay below the soil?
No. Species differ in habitat and in where their flowers appear. A scholarly review of the genus reports that some Rhizanthella species flower underground, while R. slateri can flower above ground. Flowering position can also vary with conditions, so it is inaccurate to picture every member of the genus as permanently buried. The western underground orchid’s fully subterranean, leafless habit is also described in a University of Western Australia research repository habitat record and in Western Australia’s Wheatbelt Orchid Rescue Project document. These details apply to the species or populations described, not automatically to every underground orchid.
Where do they grow, and are they endangered?
Rhizanthella species occur in Australia, with different species associated with distinct habitats. The western underground orchid, R. gardneri, is a rare wild plant with specialized fungal biology and conservation concerns. A 2011 University of Western Australia news report described it as critically endangered; the Australian government recovery plan is historical and covers 2003–2008. Those sources provide biological and historical conservation context, not a current population count or confirmation of a present-day legal listing.

Its rarity and dependence on fungi make it unsuitable as a casual gardening project. Do not dig up wild plants; the available sources do not establish legitimate consumer availability or a simple way to cultivate the species at home.

Rhizanthella is a striking, well-documented example, but the evidence here does not support a reliable ranking of unrelated underground-flowering plants. Lists that combine it with every plant that has a bulb or tuber underground blur an important distinction: those storage organs may be hidden even when the flowers are plainly above ground. If you encounter a claim about another underground bloom, check whether it means the flower is buried or merely that the plant has underground roots, stems, or storage organs.
