Start by sorting items into categories and planning zones, then measure the space before choosing bins, canisters, turntables, or shelf risers. The Home Edit’s own advice is to put function before appearance—and there is no single setup that suits every pantry.
Plan the pantry before choosing products
Begin with the contents, not the containers. The Home Edit’s pantry-planning advice, contributed by Li McGinnis, founder of The Organizing Genius, is to draw a diagram, record measurements, empty and sort the pantry, and establish zones. Suggested zones include breakfast, dinner, dry goods, snacks, beverages, and paper goods. Photograph the sorted contents and keep the images and measurements handy while shopping. Joanna Teplin of The Home Edit has said, “We get asked that a lot, and there’s no one-size-fits-all answer.” She recommends giving priority to categories over color, naming dinner, lunch, breakfast, baking, sweets, and snacks as examples. Clea Shearer describes the approach this way: “We always like to say that we start from a place of function and then make it as beautiful as possible—but you have to start with smart systems.” Both co-founders were speaking in an ELLE Decor interview about kitchen organization.
Measure the shelves and corners
Record shelf width, depth, and usable height, accounting for any lips, brackets, or other obstructions that affect fit. Check a container’s footprint and capacity against the goods you want to store; a tall canister that blocks the shelf above or a bin that cannot slide out easily may frustrate the system. For a turntable in a hard-to-reach corner, The Home Edit recommends measuring the corner diagonally to establish the maximum size that can fit.

Which type of organizer fits each job?

For refrigerator storage, choose by food type and the drawer or shelf dimensions; divided and produce-specific bins are among the categories listed. A pantry container is not automatically the right shape or fit for a refrigerator, so measure that space separately.

- Sort: Empty the pantry and group items by how they are used, such as breakfast, baking, snacks, or dinner.
- Zone: Decide where each category belongs, taking frequency of use and household routines into account.
- Measure and document: Record shelf dimensions, draw a simple diagram, and photograph the sorted contents. Measure corners diagonally if considering a turntable.
- Choose the organizer for the job: Select bins for grouped items, canisters for dry goods you want to decant, turntables for suitable hard-to-reach corners, and risers when added visibility is useful.
- Check fit and current listing details: Compare product dimensions and capacity with your measurements, then confirm current price and availability on the retailer’s page.
