You can grow flowers, herbs, or vegetables on a patio, deck, or balcony without a garden bed. The key is to match the plant to the sunlight and container it will have, then check the potting mix regularly: pots hold less water and root space than the ground.
1. Match the plant to your spot
Notice how many hours of direct sunlight the spot gets before choosing what to grow. Most vegetables need about 6–8 hours of sun. Leafy vegetables can tolerate partial shade; some grow with about 3 hours, while fruiting vegetables generally need more sun. Herbs and flowers also vary, so check the plant label or seed packet for its light needs.
For a small patio, deck, or balcony, look for compact “bush” or “dwarf” varieties and choose plants you will enjoy eating or using. Local planting dates and suitable cultivars depend on your climate; check local extension advice and the seed packet or plant label.
2. Choose a container that fits the mature plant
Compare the container’s width and depth with the plant’s mature height, spread, and root needs. A University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources handout gives 10 inches wide by 10 inches deep as a general guideline for a larger container, but the right size varies by crop and variety. Its crop examples also show that the number of plants to grow depends on pot size.

- 300G THICKENED FABRIC, BUILT FOR MULTIPLE SEASONS — 300 g/m² non-woven fabric (vs. 200 g/m² or thinner on entry-level bags), so the walls hold their shape when filled and resist tearing at the seams. Each empty bag weighs 4 oz — 16 oz for the 4-pack. Fold flat and store indoors over winter and they are built to be replanted season after season 3.
- AIR-PRUNED ROOTS, NO ROOT ROT — Water drains through the whole fabric wall instead of pooling at one drainage hole, and air reaches the root ball from every side. Roots stop at the fabric edge and branch out instead of circling the pot, which is why plants in fabric bags build a denser feeder-root system than plants in plastic pots. Indoors, set the bags on a saucer or tray — the fabric drains from the base.
- DOUBLE-STITCHED HANDLES THAT DON'T RIP — Two woven webbing straps are sewn to the bag wall with a double-stitched box-X reinforcement (not cut from the same fabric as the bag body), tested to carry 180 LB. A filled 5-gallon bag of damp soil runs roughly 40–50 lbs, so the handles are the part that decides whether you can chase the sun across a patio — or not.Equipped with strong reinforced handles, easy to move the plants around your garden, patio or balcony, even when the bag is filled with soil.
- SIZED FOR HERBS, GREENS, STRAWBERRIES & FLOWERS — 12.2" across and 10.2" deep is the right root room for basil, mint, cilantro, rosemary, lettuce, spinach, strawberries, marigolds and compact peppers. Growing full-size tomatoes, potatoes or squash? Size up to our 7, 10 or 15 gallon bags instead — those crops need more depth than a 5-gallon bag can give.
- FOLDS FLAT — STORE THE WHOLE SET IN A DRAWER — Empty the soil, fold each bag flat, and all 4 stack down to about 1.96inch — they slide into a cupboard gap or under a shelf instead of taking up a corner of the balcony all winter. Rigid plastic pots can't do this, which is what makes fabric bags practical for apartments and small patios.
Use a pot with drainage holes. If large holes might let potting mix escape, cover them with a porous screen. Skip gravel or rocks at the bottom: they take up root space and do not replace drainage holes. Larger pots hold more moisture but can be heavier to move.
3. Fill it with container potting mix
Use a lightweight growing mix made for containers rather than dense soil dug from the ground. Container mix gives roots a balance of air, water, nutrients, and support. University of Maryland Extension reports that “High-quality potting mixes have a pore space volume of 50% to 80%.” University of Maryland Extension explains container growing media.

4. Sow seeds or plant a transplant
Either seeds or nursery-grown plants can get a container garden started. Seeds are a direct way to begin; follow the packet for planting depth, spacing, and timing. Transplants can be a route to an earlier harvest, but the best choice depends on the crop and local planting window.

Set a transplant at the same depth it was growing in its nursery pot. If roots are tightly circling the root ball, loosen them carefully, then plant with room for mature growth. Water gently afterward so you do not wash seeds aside or disturb young plants.
5. Water thoroughly after planting
Water gently until the mix is moist and excess water runs from the drainage holes. For later watering, check the mix rather than relying on a fixed calendar or waiting for wilting. Iowa State University Extension recommends checking daily, especially in summer, and watering when the mix feels dry 1–2 inches below the surface; keep watering until it drains from the bottom. These are practical checks, not a rule to water every pot every day. See Iowa State’s container-care guidance.

- Preventing Root Circling: Good ventilation and breathability prevent root circling.
- Visualization Design: Visualization window allows you to determine when plants are mature for harvest.
6. Monitor and maintain the garden
Recheck moisture as weather, pot size, container material, and plant growth change. Container plants often need watering more frequently than plants in the ground, but the mix’s condition is a better guide than a preset schedule. Check the growing-medium and fertilizer labels for feeding directions: nutrients in pots can be depleted by plant growth and watering, and fertilizer recommendations vary.
Give crops that need support an appropriate stake, cage, or trellis. Keep care specific to the plant you chose, and follow its label for other growing needs.

What can I grow in a container garden?
Start with the sunlight and space you have. Leafy vegetables and some herbs can suit less-sunny locations better than fruiting vegetables, which generally need more sun. Then check the plant’s mature size against the pot’s dimensions. Compact varieties can help when space is limited; no single container size suits every crop.
