Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The best soundproof curtains depend on whether you want to damp room echo or reduce noise coming through a window. Heavy blackout drapes can help with privacy, light control and some perceived noise, but a curtain is not a sealed wall or window. For transmission reduction, compare documented test results and the exact tested construction—not a “soundproof” label or an isolated decibel claim.
First decide what sound problem you need to solve
Less echo inside the room
Sound absorption reduces reflections within a space. It can make a room feel less lively, but it does not establish how much outside noise a curtain blocks. NRC is an absorption measure; it is not interchangeable with a transmission rating.
Less noise passing through a window
Transmission performance concerns sound passing through an assembly. STC and Rw are ratings derived under particular test conditions; neither guarantees the same result at a particular home window. Gaps around the opening, the window construction, curtain coverage, installation and the room all affect what you hear.
What to look for when comparing curtains
- Product class: distinguish ready-made consumer drapes from custom engineered acoustic curtain systems. A test result for one construction does not apply to another.
- Test disclosure: look for the named laboratory, accreditation, test standard, report number, result and finished-product surface mass. Cotton Silence’s industry register recommends these six details and distinguishes transmission testing such as ISO 10140-2 from absorption testing such as ISO 354 or ISO 11654. It is an industry register, not a regulator. Cotton Silence
- Coverage and fit: check finished dimensions against the whole opening and consider how the curtain hangs and closes. An uncovered edge or poor fit can undermine expectations; NOKOMIS notes that environment, fit or sealing, shutter-box configuration and room conditions affect actual performance. NOKOMIS
- Construction and practicalities: compare layers, material and finished mass alongside appearance, current price, dimensions and lead time. Recheck current retail details before buying.
Products and published evidence to compare
The figures below are claims tied to specific products or constructions, not a like-for-like independent test of the market. Read the metric and tested specimen before comparing numbers.

| Consumer ready-made options named by SlowHum: Sun Zero Halton, NICETOWN Sound Barrier Curtains, StangH 300GSM Velvet Curtains, Deconovo blackout curtains and RYB HOME | SlowHum’s roundup, dated September 17, 2026, says specifications are manufacturer claims cross-checked against listings and that it did not test the products in-house. SlowHum roundup | Useful as a shopping lead, not independent comparative evidence that one curtain blocks more noise than another. |
| Memtech Acoustics Quiet Curtains | The manufacturer lists STC 13 and STC 17 lining options on its lab-results page and claims the product line can reach NRC 1.0. Memtech lab results | STC and NRC describe different performance goals. Ask for the report and confirm the lining, assembly and configuration tested before applying the figures to a room. |
| NOKOMIS Performance Plus | The manufacturer cites Daidalos Peutz, BELAC/ISO 17025 accreditation, NBN EN ISO 10140-2:2010, report A-2020LAB-060-I766-44092_E, and Rw(C;Ctr) = 14(-1;-3) dB. A separate product page claims up to -28.2 dB in laboratory measurement. NOKOMIS Performance Plus | The weighted Rw result and the separately stated maximum are different reported values, not directly interchangeable ratings. Request the report to check the precise specimen and configuration. |
| AmCraft specified industrial curtain/panel constructions | A 2025 specification sheet reports STC 21 and NRC 1.05 for specified constructions. AmCraft Manufacturing | These industrial-panel figures do not establish residential curtain performance. The sheet says results vary with room size and configuration, frequency and surrounding surfaces, and recommends a slight accordion hang for more absorption. |
How to choose for a home
For blackout, privacy or modest echo softening
A ready-made heavy or blackout curtain may be a sensible lower-cost option when the goal is light control, privacy or a less reflective feel. Treat noise reduction as limited and product-dependent, not as a promise that outdoor sound will be blocked.
For a documented acoustic curtain system
Consider a custom engineered system when you need substantial coverage or a product-specific laboratory claim. Before ordering, request the full report and verify its test method, specimen, dimensions and mounting details against the installation you plan to use. The published numbers alone do not predict the result at your opening.

When the opening itself is the problem
If sound is entering through gaps or a weak window assembly, curtains cannot be assumed to perform like a sealed window or wall. Addressing the opening and its fit may matter more than choosing a drape based on a large-sounding decibel figure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to read a “soundproof” claim
“Soundproof” is not a reliable performance specification by itself. A dB figure without its method, test assembly and conditions does not show what a curtain will do in a particular home. Use absorption figures to assess echo control and transmission ratings to assess tested sound reduction through a construction; then verify that the product and installation match the claim.

- Sound Absorption & Noise Reduction: Made with a polyester woven surface and recycled cotton filling, this 3-layer physical barrier effectively absorbs indoor echoes, and reduces sound reflections. Note: 1. This product provides limited sound insulation and is mainly used as a protective barrier only. 2. Keep the product in a dry environment. If it gets wet, please air dry it promptly. Prolonged dampness may cause unpleasant odors and material damage
- Effective Light Blocking: The thick, dense material and dark color effectively block light, creating a dim environment and avoiding glare. Ideal for home theaters, conference room projections, tents, or temporary darkrooms
- Thickened Design: Secured with zig-zag quilting and double-stitched binding, the soundproof blanket maintains its shape, resists tearing, and stands up to long-term hanging use. No glue bonding and odor-free materials make it friendly for users and households
- Large Coverage: Each blanket measures 80 x 48 in / 2032 x 1219 mm. It provides wide coverage with fewer seams, ideal for covering standard doors and windows or handling large spaces where soundproofing, light blocking, and insulation are needed
- Easy Installation: Equipped with multiple metal grommets and woven straps, the acoustic blankets can be hung with hooks, screws, or curtain rods. Quick to set up and secure, it works as a flexible soundproof, blackout, or insulation barrier on walls, doors, and windows.
