Table Saw vs. Miter Saw: Which Cuts Each Tool Handles Best

A miter saw excels at board-to-length and angled cuts; a table saw is built for ripping and repeatable widths. Learn where they overlap and how to set them up safely.

Choose a miter saw for cutting boards to length and making angled ends; choose a table saw for ripping boards lengthwise and producing repeatable widths. They overlap—table saws can crosscut and make angled cuts with the right setup—but the right tool depends on the cut, stock size and safe working setup.

What is the difference between a rip cut and a crosscut?

A rip cut runs predominantly parallel to the wood grain; a crosscut runs predominantly across it. That direction is the quickest way to identify which saw naturally suits a job.

A table saw’s rip fence guides stock parallel to the blade, making it the practical choice for changing a board’s width or cutting multiple pieces to the same width. A miter saw holds stock against a fence while the blade head comes down through it, making it well suited to crosscuts and angled board ends.

Which saw should you use for each job?

Task Best starting point Why
Cut boards to length Miter saw It is designed to crosscut stock held against its fence.
Cut trim or molding to an angle Miter saw It makes angled end cuts; compound models can also bevel the blade.
Rip boards narrower Table saw The rip fence guides the stock along the blade for a lengthwise cut.
Make several parts the same width Table saw The fence can be set for repeatable width cuts.
Crosscut on a table saw Table saw with a miter gauge or suitable crosscut setup Use the proper setup for the operation; do not use the rip fence as a crosscut guide or length stop.

What cuts can a miter saw handle?

Crosscuts and angled ends

A miter saw’s main role is cutting a board to length. It can also cut an angled end, useful for trim and other work where pieces meet at an angle. Compound models add a beveling head, allowing a cut that is both angled across the board and beveled through its thickness. The available angles and adjustment range depend on the specific saw.

  • 2-IN-1 CONVERTIBLE MITER/TABLE SAW – The Evolution R8MTS combines a compound miter saw and table saw in one compact design, ideal for tight workspaces, home workshops, and DIY projects. Easily switch between modes with simple locking pins for versatile cutting.
  • MULTI-MATERIAL CUTTING – Cuts wood, plastic, mild steel, aluminum, and composites with a single TCT blade. Delivers fine-finish cuts in hardwood, burr-free cuts in steel, and safe cuts through reclaimed wood with embedded nails—no blade changes needed.
  • PRECISE & ACCURATE – Features a 0-45º bevel and 45º left to 45º right miter range with pre-set stops for quick, accurate adjustments. The cast aluminum table top ensures a flat cutting surface, while the dual-locking rip fence and thin-kerf blade provide clean, precise cuts.
  • ADVANCED SAFETY FEATURES – An innovative blade guard stays covered until contact, keeping the blade concealed in miter and table saw modes. A riving knife and table saw blade guard reduce kickback, while dust extraction ports maintain a clean workspace.
  • POWERFUL & COMPACT – A high-torque 12A motor powers through tough materials. The 4-3/4” x 2-3/16” crosscut capacity in miter mode and 1-1/2” rip capacity in table mode make it ideal for job sites, workshops, and DIY projects. Its lightweight, space-saving design ensures easy transport and storage.

Wider stock and sliding models

A sliding miter saw moves its head along rails, allowing it to crosscut wider stock than a comparable non-sliding design. Capacity depends on the blade size, saw design and cut angle, so check the exact model’s manual rather than relying on the label “sliding.” The saw’s capacity must accommodate the material and the intended cut.

Common work

Miter saws are often used for trim, molding, flooring, siding and framing crosscuts. They are not the tool for ripping a board lengthwise: as WorkSafe New Zealand explains, a miter saw cannot turn its blade parallel to the back fence for a rip cut (WorkSafe New Zealand’s miter-saw guidance).

What cuts can a table saw handle?

Ripping and repeatable widths

For ripping, set the fence parallel to the blade, set the intended width and feed the stock against the fence according to the saw’s instructions. This makes the table saw the natural choice when sizing boards for furniture or cabinetry or when several parts need a consistent width.

Crosscuts, miters and bevels

A table saw is not limited to ripping. With an appropriate miter gauge or other suitable crosscut setup, it can crosscut stock. It can also make miter, bevel and compound miter cuts with the right setup. The operation, stock and saw model determine what setup is appropriate; follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Large panels and stock support

Large panels can be awkward to control on a table saw. Before making a cut, check that the material fits the saw’s capacity and that it can be supported and controlled throughout the operation. Do not proceed if the panel is unstable or the setup does not match the saw’s instructions.

How should you choose between them?

  • Choose a miter-saw workflow if your list is mostly board-to-length cuts, trim or angled ends. Check the cut capacity against your widest material.
  • Choose a table-saw workflow if you need to rip stock, size boards to a consistent width or make repeated-width parts.
  • Consider both tools if the work regularly involves both kinds of cuts. Compare the actual cut list, material dimensions, available space and the support each setup requires.

Neither tool is a universal substitute for the other: a miter saw does not rip, while a table saw can do more than rip only when configured for the specific operation. A suitable choice is one you can set up and operate safely for the work at hand.

Safety and setup essentials

Miter saw

OSHA advises: “Always wear eye and face protection.” Its miter-saw safety guidance also identifies hands slipping or coming too close to the blade as hazards, and describes guarding that adjusts to the material’s thickness. Keep hands clear, secure and support the stock as directed by the saw’s manual, and use the guard correctly.

Table saw

Use the rip fence for ripping, not as a guide or length stop for crosscutting. The 2020 RIDGID 36-5000T2 Contractor Table Saw Operator’s Manual warns, “NEVER use the fence as a guide or length stop when crosscutting,” and directs users to remove the rip fence for its described miter-gauge crosscut setup. A trapped offcut can bind and be thrown.
