To get started, choose a sunny, well-drained site with water nearby, size the bed so you can reach every square without stepping into it, and use crop-specific spacing rather than putting the same number of plants in every square.
How to start a square foot garden
- Choose the site. Look for well-drained ground with convenient access to water. The Square Foot Gardening Foundation recommends 6–8 hours of direct sun daily. Match the light to your crops: University of Minnesota Extension recommends at least 6–8 hours for tomatoes, peppers and eggplants, while some leafy crops tolerate partial shade. - Plan a reachable bed. Choose a box size that lets you reach its center from the sides without walking on the growing area. There is no single required bed size: let your reach, available space, access and drainage guide the dimensions. Use materials intended for garden use.
- Prepare the growing medium. Decide whether you want to follow the branded method’s mix or use an extension-recommended raised-bed blend; they are different approaches, not one shared recipe.
- Install the grid. Lay out one-foot squares on the planting surface. A purchased grid is optional; a homemade or adapted grid can mark the same planting units.
- Choose crops and assign squares. Consider local season, sunlight, mature size and the spacing guidance for each crop. Plan support and account for shading from tall or climbing plants.
- Water and monitor. Check soil moisture regularly. Raised-bed soil can dry faster than surrounding garden soil, especially in warm weather or in shallow, exposed beds.
What soil should you use?
The Square Foot Gardening method
The Square Foot Gardening Foundation identifies Mel’s Mix as the method’s growing blend and names coarse-grade vermiculite as its preferred medium. Its method pairs that growing medium with the grid and crop-specific planting guidance. For the Foundation’s method details, follow its current instructions rather than assuming another raised-bed mix is identical.
An extension-guided raised-bed alternative
University of Minnesota Extension recommends a raised-bed mix of roughly 1/2 to 2/3 topsoil and 1/3 to 1/2 plant-based compost, depending on the proportions used. It cautions that too much compost can create water-retention problems and says potting soil is unsuitable for raised beds because it dries too quickly. Local soil conditions and guidance may call for adjustments. The Extension notes that bulk topsoil is often less expensive than buying individual bags. How many plants fit in each square?
There is no universal plant count per square foot. The grid defines the planting area; density depends on the crop. Use the Foundation’s planting chart and the seed packet or transplant instructions for each crop instead of applying one count to every vegetable. The Foundation’s method page directs gardeners to its chart for seed and plant spacing.

How big should the bed be?
Make the bed only as wide as you can comfortably reach across from its edges, so you can tend the center without stepping into the growing area and compacting the soil. Let the footprint fit your site and planned crops; the method does not require one universal box dimension. Before filling it, consider whether the location drains well and gives you room to reach, water and tend every square.
How should you water a raised square-foot garden?
Raised beds generally dry more quickly than surrounding garden soil, so check moisture rather than assuming the bed stays wet. Utah State University Extension says raised beds must be irrigated and describes drip irrigation as a simple, efficient option; it is not a requirement. Hand watering is also possible if you can keep up with the bed’s needs. See Utah State University Extension’s raised-bed advice.

Plan crop combinations and supports
Choose plants for your local growing season and the sunlight available, then place them according to their individual spacing needs. Leave room for mature plants, and consider where tall or climbing crops may shade neighboring squares. Which approach should you follow?
- For fidelity to the named method: Use the Foundation’s grid, planting chart and Mel’s Mix instructions.
- For locally available materials: Compare the method-specific growing medium with local raised-bed soil guidance, including the Extension cautions about excess compost and fast-drying potting soil.
- For easier access: Base bed width on your reach and make sure every planting area can be tended without stepping into it.
- For lower watering effort: Consider an optional drip system if regular hand watering is impractical.
- For a productive planting plan: Choose crops for season and light, then follow each crop’s spacing and account for mature size and shade.
