The safest approach is to load plywood as a stable, supported bundle and tie it directly to suitable truck-bed anchor points with rated cargo straps. Restrain it so it cannot slide forward, backward or sideways, lift, or let individual sheets flutter out. Check your truck’s payload and anchor limits, protect edges where straps touch the sheets, and recheck the load after a short drive. If the bed cannot support and restrain the plywood adequately, use a compatible rated support or a vehicle better suited to the load.
What makes a plywood load secure?
A secure load stays put in the directions that matter: forward under braking, backward, sideways, and upward. Tie-down straps should attach directly to cargo anchor points intended for restraint—not to improvised fixtures—and should hold the sheets as one stable bundle. A tarp or cover may help protect the plywood, but it is not a substitute for restraint.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommends tying large objects directly to the vehicle or trailer and identifies rope, netting, or straps as tie-down options. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) describes the general securement principle as firmly immobilizing or securing cargo with adequate structures, dunnage, shoring bars, tiedowns, or a combination. Load and secure the sheets step by step
- Check capacity and hardware. Compare the combined load weight with the pickup’s payload capacity. Inspect the intended anchor points and use only fixtures approved for cargo restraint, within the limits in the owner’s manual. Do not use damaged hardware.
- Build a stable bundle and support it. Stack the sheets flat and evenly. Support the part extending beyond the bed; depending on the truck and load, that may mean lowering the tailgate or using a compatible, properly rated bed support. Do not rely on unsupported overhang, friction, or a tarp to hold the plywood.
- Attach and snug the straps. Connect rated tie-down straps directly to suitable vehicle anchors. Arrange them to prevent movement in every relevant direction, tightening enough to hold the bundle without damaging the sheets. There is no universal strap count or working-load rating for every pickup and plywood load; the needed setup depends on the cargo, its support, and the truck’s anchors.
- Protect contact points. Put suitable edge protection wherever a strap could abrade or cut the plywood. Follow any strap-routing restrictions in the manual for your specific truck.
- Inspect before and shortly after departure. Check the load from the front, sides, and rear. Ask whether anything could fall or blow away, and consider what would happen during sudden braking or over a bump. Stop and recheck if a strap loosens or the bundle shifts.
Choose a carrying setup the truck can support
A short bed can leave a full sheet projecting beyond the bed. Which setup is appropriate depends on how much of the sheet is supported and whether the bundle can still be restrained in all directions.

Follow your truck’s limits and local rules
Anchor placement and routing are vehicle-specific. For example, a search result for the 2026 Ford F-150 owner’s manual warns not to exceed load-retaining-fixture ratings and says not to run a single strap from a bed anchor to a tailgate anchor. That is model-specific guidance, not a universal pickup rule; consult the actual manual for your truck. Ford owner’s manuals.
FMCSA’s cargo-securement rules apply to cargo-carrying commercial motor vehicles operated in interstate commerce. Its section for dressed lumber and similar building products covers packaged or bundled building products such as plywood; unbundled products are treated as loose cargo under the general rules. NHTSA says unsecured-load laws exist in every state and the District of Columbia, but the rules for overhang, marking, and penalties depend on the jurisdiction. Check the applicable state and local requirements, especially if plywood extends beyond the bed. NHTSA: Drive Safe—Secure Your Load.
