Yes, you can usually control an existing garage door from your phone—but only when the controller is compatible with the exact opener and its photoelectric safety sensors. A retrofit controller adds Wi‑Fi to a compatible opener; replacing the opener with a model that has connectivity built in is the other route. Before buying, verify the opener model, sensor behavior, garage Wi‑Fi signal, smart-home platform, number of doors, and any required accessory.
How a smart garage control system works
A retrofit controller connects to your existing opener and communicates with a phone app over Wi‑Fi. The app normally shows whether the door is open or closed and lets an authorized user operate it remotely. Depending on the system, you may also get open/close alerts, “left open” notifications, schedules, guest access, voice-assistant control, or delivery features.
The alternative is a new garage-door opener with smart connectivity built in. That can reduce compatibility questions, but it requires replacing the opener rather than adding a controller to the one you already own.
Remote control depends on a reliable Wi‑Fi signal in the garage. Check coverage at the opener location—not just inside the house—before choosing an internet-connected system.

Compatibility is the first decision
Do not rely on the opener brand or manufacturing year alone. Use the current compatibility checker and manual for the exact controller model, then confirm the exact opener model and safety-sensor arrangement.
Photoelectric sensor requirements
Chamberlain says its MYQ-G0401-ES works with most major brands manufactured after 1993 that use standard photoelectric sensors which do not switch off or enter a low-power mode. “Most” is not “every opener after 1993”: the manufacturer provides supported brand and year ranges and directs buyers to its compatibility tool.
Model-specific limits
Chamberlain support notes model-specific restrictions and, for some Chamberlain, LiftMaster and Craftsman openers, uses learn-button colors as part of identification. Older hubs and legacy products can have different compatibility lists. Check the current page and manual for the product you intend to install rather than applying an old list to a new controller.

When an accessory is required
Meross provides a separate model checker for its product families and warns that some combinations require an accessory. In those cases, use the specified accessory—Meross describes one route involving a paired universal remote and signal cable—not a random remote. If you are unsure which terminals are which, do not perform a terminal test; use the manufacturer’s compatibility process or obtain qualified help.
Current controller options
The following are representative manufacturer-listed options. Prices were displayed on the official pages during research on September 28, 2026; they are volatile listing observations, not guaranteed current offers.
| Controller | What the manufacturer lists | Doors and accessories | Observed listing price | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chamberlain Smart Garage Control MYQ-G0401-ES | Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth, app control and status, alerts, guest access and schedules | One door controller; a second door can be monitored with an additional sensor sold separately; eligible Prime members can link myQ for Amazon Key in-garage delivery | $64.99 on the official listing at research time | Verify the exact opener and photoelectric-sensor compatibility in Chamberlain’s current tool |
| Meross MSG100 | Meross app or Apple Home app; HomeKit, Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant support | Door sensor and power cable/adapter included; an accessory may be needed for some US and Canadian configurations | $49.99 on the official listing at research time | Run Meross’s model checker before ordering |
| Meross MSG150 | Meross app or Apple Home app; HomeKit, Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant support | Check the MSG150-specific compatibility guidance and included parts | $69.99 on the official listing at research time | Do not assume MSG150 has identical compatibility conditions to MSG100 |
Choosing between the options
Choose by exact opener compatibility
This is the non-negotiable filter. A lower price or preferred ecosystem does not compensate for an incompatible opener or sensor system.

- CONTROL & MONITOR FROM ANYWHERE: Open, close, and quickly check your garage door status from anywhere using your smartphone. Compatible with iOS, and Android.

Choose by smart-home platform
Meross names Apple Home, HomeKit, Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant support for MSG100 and MSG150. Chamberlain’s listed functions emphasize the myQ app, alerts, schedules, guest access and Amazon Key for eligible users. Confirm that the platform you use is supported for the specific model and region.
Choose by number of doors
For Chamberlain’s MYQ-G0401-ES, a second door requires an additional sensor sold separately. Check whether a multi-door installation needs extra controllers, sensors, power supplies or accessories before comparing total cost.

Choose by Wi‑Fi and installation requirements
A controller is only useful for remote operation if the garage maintains a dependable connection. Also account for the included sensor and power hardware, the opener’s available connection points, and any model-specific accessory identified by the checker.

Safe installation and setup checklist
- Identify the opener. Record the exact manufacturer and model from the opener housing or its documentation. Do not stop at the brand name or an approximate age.
- Check garage Wi‑Fi. Test the signal where the controller will be installed. Improve coverage before relying on app-based control.
- Run the manufacturer’s compatibility checker. Use the current checker for the exact controller family. Follow any model-specific learn-button, sensor or accessory instructions.
- Inspect the photoelectric safety sensors. Keep the existing sensors installed, aligned and working. Chamberlain’s compatibility statement depends on standard photoelectric sensors that remain active rather than entering a low-power state.
- Use only specified hardware. If Meross or another manufacturer identifies an accessory for your combination, use that accessory and its instructions. Do not substitute an unverified remote or cable.
- Follow the exact manual for wiring and pairing. If terminal locations are uncertain, stop rather than guessing or attempting a terminal test.
- Configure app permissions and alerts. Add only the people who need access, then enable status and left-open notifications or schedules that fit how the household uses the door.
- Verify operation locally. Confirm that the door reverses correctly with the existing safety system and that the app reports the actual door state before depending on remote control.
Chamberlain’s support guidance says a Smart Garage Hub used for remote closing must alert bystanders under UL 325. That manufacturer statement is not a substitute for reading the product instructions or treating remote closing as risk-free; keep people, pets and vehicles clear and follow the opener and controller safety directions.

The checker rejects the opener
Do not force the installation. Recheck the exact model number, sensor type and controller family. Older hubs can have different lists, and a newer controller’s compatibility cannot be inferred from a legacy product.
The app cannot reach the controller
Start with Wi‑Fi at the garage, then confirm the controller is powered and paired according to its manual. A strong signal in the house does not prove that the opener location has adequate coverage.

The door status is wrong or alerts are missing
Inspect the door sensor placement and pairing, then verify that the app has notification permission. Do not rely on remote commands until the displayed state matches the physical door.
A second door is not included
Many systems treat each door as a separate monitored device. For MYQ-G0401-ES, Chamberlain specifically lists an additional sensor for a second door. Include that hardware when calculating the project cost.
Which approach fits your garage?
| Situation | Most practical route | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Existing opener passes the current checker and you want app access | Retrofit controller | Usually avoids replacing a functioning opener while adding status and remote operation |
| Opener fails compatibility or lacks the required sensor arrangement | Compatible replacement opener or a manufacturer-approved accessory path | Prevents an unsafe or unsupported retrofit |
| You use Apple Home, Alexa or Google Assistant | A controller that explicitly lists your platform, such as the named Meross integrations | Platform support is model-specific and should be confirmed before purchase |
| You have two garage doors | Price the extra sensor/controller hardware first | Per-door hardware can change the total cost |
What the published evidence does—and does not—show
Manufacturer pages establish listed features, compatibility procedures and observed prices. They do not establish a market-wide “best” controller, comparative reliability, failure rates or independent performance results. Treat current inventory, integrations, compatibility lists and prices as changeable and recheck them before ordering.
