Pocket-hole joinery connects two pieces of wood with a screw driven through an angled pocket and into the mating piece. A pocket-hole jig guides a stepped bit to create the pocket and pilot hole; accurate setup depends on matching the jig and bit to the stock’s actual thickness, then choosing the right screw for that thickness and material.
How pocket-hole joinery works
The jig holds the workpiece and guides a stepped drill bit at an angle. The bit forms a wider recess for the screw head and a narrower pilot hole that directs the screw into the adjoining piece. When driven, the screw pulls the two workpieces together. The holes can remain visible or be filled with plugs.
Set up the jig and drill bit
- Measure the stock. Use its actual thickness, not just the nominal size printed on a lumber label; actual dimensions can differ.
- Set the drill guide. Adjust the jig for the measured material thickness.
- Set the stop collar. Position the stepped bit’s collar for that same thickness. The guide and collar should match so the bit forms the pocket and pilot hole at the intended depth.
- Clamp the workpiece. Keep it firmly seated and stable while drilling. Follow the jig maker’s instructions for the clamp and drill setup.
Stock thickness drives the jig position and bit depth as well as the screw length. A mismatch can leave the screw too short to engage properly or allow it to break through the workpiece.

| Stock thickness | Kreg guide screw-length example |
|---|---|
| 1/2 or 5/8 inch | 1 inch |
| 3/4 inch | 1 1/4 inches |
| 7/8 or 1 inch | 1 1/2 inches |
| 1 1/4 or 1 3/8 inches | 2 inches |
| 1 1/2 inches | 2 1/2 inches |
Choose thread type for the material: Kreg recommends fine-thread screws for hardwoods and coarse-thread screws for softwoods and sheet goods such as plywood and MDF. The company advises against ordinary woodworking screws and drywall screws for pocket-hole joinery. See Kreg’s pocket-hole screw guidance and step-by-step jig guide.
Drill and assemble the joint
- With the jig and bit set for the measured thickness, drill the pocket holes in the first workpiece.
- Position the pieces in their intended relationship and clamp them so their faces and edges stay aligned.
- Drive the specified pocket-hole screw through the pocket and into the mating piece. Stop when the joint is snug; excessive tightening can strip the screw or split the wood.
Clamping matters because the screw’s pulling action can shift a piece as the joint closes. Use a clamp suited to the assembly and keep both parts aligned until the screw is snug.

Leave the holes visible or conceal them
Pocket holes do not have to be filled for the joint to work. If appearance calls for a clean surface, use purchased plugs or make plugs from matching project wood. Plugging is a finish choice, so consider the visibility of the hole and the look of the finished piece before choosing.
Choose a jig for the work
Jig features matter more than a blanket “best” label. Consider how often the jig will move between jobs, how it adjusts, how it clamps, and whether dust collection or included accessories suit the work. Pocket holes provide an angled access path for screws and a repeatable way to position them. The cited manufacturer instructions explain setup and screw selection, but do not establish that pocket-hole joints are stronger, faster, or otherwise superior to dowels, biscuits, mortise-and-tenon joints, or other methods. Choose a joint based on the project’s design and requirements rather than assuming one method is universally best.
