Pneumatic Sanders for Curved Surfaces: How to Choose the Right Tool

A pneumatic sander’s pad must suit the curve. Compare broad-radius panels, tight contours, tool geometry, air demand, and dust setup before choosing.

For curved work, choose a pneumatic sander by the curve’s radius and the pad’s shape—not just by tool size. A broad, gradual curve can suit a larger dual-action (DA) sander; tight contours or restricted access may call for a smaller angle sander or a hand-fitted pad. No single random-orbit sander is suited to every curve.

Match the sander to the curve

A sander can follow a surface only as well as its pad geometry allows. A large pad may work across a broad-radius panel, but it can bridge a tight hollow or fail to reach an edge. A smaller tool can reach confined areas, though its smaller contact area may make broad surfaces slower to cover.

Broad, gradual curves

For a large-radius curved surface, consider a tool designed for that geometry. RUPES describes its SLP41A as suitable for large-radius curved surfaces. It has a 400 × 70 mm rectangular pad, a 4.8 mm orbit, and maximum air consumption of 400 l/min, according to the RUPES product page. Those specifications describe this model, not a general recommendation for every curved panel.

Tight contours and hard-to-reach spots

A smaller pad or angled head can improve access where a larger pad cannot sit comfortably. Taylor describes its T-7511 2-inch angle DA sander as a tool for hard-to-reach finish work. For a narrow or very tight contour, a hand-fitted sanding pad may offer better control than trying to force a machine pad into the curve.

Compare the pad, orbit, and intended job

“DA” and “random orbit” describe motion, but they do not tell you whether a tool will fit a particular curve or finish task. Compare pad shape and size alongside the tool’s stated application, abrasive attachment, and dust setup.

Example What the source specifies Potential fit
Taylor T-7511 2-inch angle DA sander; described for hard-to-reach finish work Restricted access and small finishing areas; check whether its pad geometry matches the contour
Chicago Pneumatic CP7225-3 3-inch random-orbit palm sander for final sanding and finishing Smaller-area finishing; the model’s manual lists a 3-inch pad
Chicago Pneumatic CP870 6-inch DA series described for filler blending and pre-paint preparation Broader work where its pad can sit flat; not evidence that it fits every curve
RUPES SLP41A 400 × 70 mm rectangular pad; manufacturer specifies large-radius curved surfaces Broad, gradual curves that suit its long pad

Specifications and intended applications above come from the manufacturers’ product pages and the CP7225/CP7255 manual. Confirm the exact tool version and pad compatibility before buying.

Check how the abrasive attaches

These examples span PSA (pressure-sensitive adhesive), adhesive-backed, and hook-and-loop abrasive configurations, as well as foam-pad options in product families. Match the abrasive and backing pad to the exact tool. A disc or sheet that has the right diameter may still have the wrong attachment or shape.

Check air supply and dust arrangements

Air consumption and pressure requirements vary substantially by model. For example, Chicago Pneumatic lists 18 CFM at free speed and a maximum dynamic pressure of 90 psi for the CP870 on its product page. A Powerfist retail listing gives 5 CFM at 90 PSI for its listed sander (product listing). These figures are not interchangeable sizing rules: check the exact tool’s documentation and the air system’s ability to supply its stated requirements.

  • Air Inlet:1/4", hook and loop sanding pad:5", Free speed: 12,000 revolutions per minute
  • Rear exhaust. Built-in regulator for speed control
  • Lighter air-motor assembly, ideal for vertical and overhead sanding applications
  • Average air consumption: 10.5 CFM;Air Pressure: 90 PSI

The Chicago Pneumatic CP7225/CP7255 manual, issued December 15, 2008, specifies 90 psig (6.3 bar) clean, dry air for that tool family. For the CP7225-3, it lists 12,000 rpm free speed and 14.5 CFM air consumption. These are model-specific figures from an older manual, not requirements for all pneumatic sanders. The manual also warns against installing a quick coupler directly into the throttle handle. See the CP7225/CP7255 manual for its documented line connection requirements.

Consider dust control before sanding. Some CP sander variants are offered with vacuum configurations; confirm what is included with the particular model. A manual for the 65084 says that piercing suitable areas of an otherwise unpunched abrasive sheet can aid dust removal and reduce the hazard. That instruction applies to the sheet and tool described there—it is not a replacement for appropriate dust extraction or other controls for the material being sanded. The same manual says to disconnect the air supply before replacing the backing pad. See the 65084 manual.

Use the pad deliberately on a curve

Keep the pad aligned with the surface rather than tipping an edge into the work. Taylor’s operating guidance is: “Keep the pad flat and keep the tool moving.” For curved work, that means letting the pad follow the contour without dwelling in one spot or pressing an edge into the material. Use the abrasive and motion suited to the job, and check the surface often as you approach the desired finish.

Taylor also advises oiling air tools before and after use. Follow the instructions for the specific sander and air system; lubrication and maintenance procedures are not universal across models. Disconnect the air supply before changing a backing pad when the tool’s manual requires it.

A practical selection checklist

  • Curve radius: Is the surface broad and gradual, or tight and confined?
  • Pad geometry: Does the pad shape sit on the intended area without bridging a hollow or catching an edge?
  • Task: Is the tool intended for filler blending, general sanding, or final finishing?
  • Abrasive fit: Does the pad take the abrasive attachment you plan to use—PSA, adhesive-backed, hook-and-loop, or another specified type?
  • Air supply: Can your setup meet the exact model’s pressure and airflow requirements with clean, dry air where specified?
  • Dust management: Does the tool support vacuum extraction, and does the abrasive have the right dust-hole pattern for the setup?
  • Access and control: Would a smaller angle tool or a hand-fitted pad give better access and control than a larger sander?
