Start by identifying the exact Porter-Cable model, then match the symptom to that model’s manual. The C2002 troubleshooting steps below apply only to the C2002; Porter-Cable compressors differ, and their parts and repair procedures are not interchangeable by default. Find the model number on the warning or caution label and search the official manual lookup before servicing or ordering parts.
Before troubleshooting: make the compressor safe
Record the model number and what the compressor is doing: it will not start, builds pressure slowly, leaks, trips its safety valve, or loses outlet pressure during tool use. Then isolate it before inspection or service. The PORTER-CABLE C2002 instruction manual says: “Before servicing unit unplug or disconnect electrical supply to the air compressor, bleed tank of pressure, and allow the air compressor to cool.” The C2002 cycles automatically when powered, and electrical voltage, compressed air, and moving parts can all pose hazards.
Use the manual for your exact model for any repair. The C2002 procedures in this guide are examples, not instructions for every Porter-Cable compressor. In particular, oil-lubricated models have different pump requirements from the oil-free C2002: consult the model’s manual for its oil level, oil type, and pump procedures.
Porter-Cable air compressor won’t start
For the C2002, the manual lists several possible causes of a motor that will not run. Begin with the external electrical supply and the model’s instructions rather than opening the motor or changing electrical protection.

- Check whether a fuse has blown or a circuit breaker has tripped. Never install a larger fuse or breaker to keep the compressor running.
- Check the supply voltage and any extension cord against the C2002 manual’s requirements; low voltage or an unsuitable cord can prevent starting.
- Consider a loose electrical connection, faulty motor, or tripped motor overload protection. Electrical wiring and repairs should be handled by authorized service personnel.
- If overload protection trips frequently, follow the manual’s overload instructions and seek trained service. Do not bypass thermal or overload protection.
These are C2002 manual-listed possibilities, not a diagnosis for another model. Use that model’s manual and service support for its electrical system.
Air compressor keeps tripping the breaker
A tripped breaker can be related to the supply, low voltage, an extension cord, a loose connection, a faulty motor, or overload protection; the C2002 manual includes these among motor-not-running causes. Do not repeatedly reset a breaker without addressing why it tripped, and do not substitute a higher-rated breaker or fuse. Verify the supply and cord only as directed by your model’s manual. If the breaker continues to trip, or inspection points to internal wiring, motor, or overload problems, stop and use authorized or trained service.

Porter-Cable compressor leaking air
For a suspected fitting leak on the C2002, the manual recommends locating the leak with a soapy-water solution and tightening a loose fitting carefully. Do not overtighten. Handle the check with the compressor safely isolated and depressurized as directed by the manual.
If the leak is at the tank or a tank weld
Stop using the compressor. A leaking tank or weld is a replacement condition, not a patching job: never drill, weld, or otherwise modify a receiver tank. PORTER-CABLE’s May 2014 C2002 manual warns that internal corrosion can weaken the tank and reproduces the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission statement, “Air compressor receiver tanks do not have an infinite life.” The manual attributes that statement to CPSC Release #02-108, published February 26, 2002, and notes that tank life depends on operating, ambient, installation, modification, and maintenance conditions.

If the C2002 safety valve leaks
Follow the C2002 manual’s instructions for the safety valve. It says to operate the valve ring and replace the valve if leakage continues. This does not replace safe pressure handling; do not work on a pressurized compressor or treat a leaking tank as a valve problem.
Compressor won’t build pressure
On the C2002, low air delivery can result from high air use, an accessory that demands more air than the compressor can supply, a hole in the hose, a restricted check valve, or an air leak. Check the demand and the simple external causes before assuming an internal failure.

- Compare the accessory’s SCFM and pressure requirements with the compressor’s rated capacity in its manual. An undersized compressor may run without meeting the tool’s demand.
- Inspect the hose for a hole and check accessible fittings for leaks using the C2002 manual’s soapy-water method.
- If the compressor’s check valve may be restricted, have a qualified technician assess it; do not infer a specific internal fault from slow pressure build alone.
A pressure switch controls when the C2002 motor starts and stops: it starts below cut-in pressure and stops at cut-out pressure. If the compressor cannot reach its expected cut-out, or continues running instead of stopping, switch it off and contact trained service. Do not change factory pressure settings.

Turn the compressor off if its safety valve opens or it appears to be building excessive tank pressure. On the C2002, the manual identifies a pressure switch that fails to stop the pump at cut-out, or a cut-out setting that is too high, as possible causes. The pressure switch and the safety valve have different jobs: the switch controls normal starting and stopping; the safety valve is an overpressure safeguard. Have a trained service provider diagnose a cut-out problem. Do not adjust the pressure switch or try to keep operating through repeated valve openings.

Pressure drops when I use an air tool
Some drop on the C2002’s regulated outlet gauge while an accessory is running is normal. Check whether the tool’s SCFM and pressure demand fit the compressor’s capacity, and assess the regulated pressure while air is flowing rather than relying only on a static reading. A drop beyond what the tool can tolerate may reflect excessive demand, a hose hole, or an air leak; check those before treating the gauge change alone as an internal compressor failure.
Choose parts and repair help by exact model
Use the model number from the warning or caution label to locate the correct manual and parts information through PORTER-CABLE’s owner-manual lookup. The C2002 manual calls for identical replacement parts and directs owners to its service site or an authorized service center. Do not assume a C2002 regulator, safety valve, or other component fits a different Porter-Cable compressor. For electrical repairs, recurring overload problems, a suspected restricted check valve, or a pressure-switch fault, use trained or authorized service rather than improvising a repair.
After use, follow the exact manual’s maintenance instructions. The May 2014 C2002 manual calls for draining tank condensation and warns that internal corrosion can weaken the tank; procedures and maintenance intervals may differ across models.
