What was CHiP?
Interesting Engineering described CHiP as a compact smart oven focused on making cookies from purpose-designed dough pods. The concept aimed to simplify the process: load a pod, select preferences and let the appliance bake the cookies.
Kevin Yu, identified in the 2016 article as SideChef’s founder and CEO, said, “We really wanted to bring the fun of baking cookies to everybody,” adding that making cookies from scratch could be tedious and that the team had brought the experience into under ten minutes. That timing was a product claim quoted by Interesting Engineering, not an independently measured result.
How was the CHiP cookie oven supposed to work?
Pod-based baking
The proposed workflow centered on branded cookie-dough pods. The article presented CHiP as a dedicated cookie appliance rather than a general-purpose oven, although the campaign FAQ also said owners could use their own dough in manual mode.

Convection and heating hardware
Interesting Engineering reported a four-inch convection fan, purpose-designed air channels and a 1300-watt heating element. A removable 10-inch nonstick tray was described as dishwasher-safe. These are reported specifications for the proposed product; the sources do not provide independent measurements of airflow, temperature accuracy, energy use or baking consistency.
Controls and automatic features
The advertised feature set included temperature monitoring, manual time and temperature controls, delay start and a keep-warm function. The article also described app notifications, cookie preferences, ordering dough and a “CookieGram” feature for sharing cookies or updates.

Could you use your own cookie dough?
Yes—according to the campaign FAQ, the intended answer was yes in manual mode. The FAQ also said users could save custom settings. That describes the promised operating modes, not confirmation that a working retail unit or compatible software remains available.
What did the campaign promise about shipping?
The CHiP campaign FAQ, last updated November 8, 2016, listed October 2017 as the planned shipping date. A planned date is not proof that shipments occurred. The reviewed sources contain no independent confirmation of delivery, production, support or retail release.

Was CHiP proven to save energy or bake better?
No independently verified CHiP performance statistics or named study appear in the reviewed sources. The article’s energy-saving discussion used a hypothetical scenario involving five percent of an estimated two billion cookies consumed by Americans; it was not a measured energy saving and should not be treated as one.
Likewise, the feature list does not demonstrate uniform browning, accurate temperature control, faster real-world baking or lower operating cost. Those questions would require testing of a production appliance under defined conditions.

What should a buyer compare instead?
If you are looking for the same general activity today, evaluate currently documented countertop ovens rather than assuming CHiP compatibility. Compare:
- usable interior and tray capacity;
- temperature range, adjustment steps and control method;
- convection capability and whether the fan can be switched off;
- preheat and bake-time controls;
- cleanup requirements and removable parts;
- countertop footprint, electrical load and ventilation needs;
- app support, warranty and replacement-part availability.
Ready-to-bake cookie dough can fit the general workflow, but generic dough is not a CHiP pod, and no current machine should be described as CHiP-compatible without manufacturer documentation.
