A ceremonial groundbreaking for Lahaina Residential, the 60-home community at 1034 Front Street destroyed in the August 2023 wildfire, was held on October 2, 2026. In a report published October 3, Maui Now said the general contractor expected physical construction to begin October 19. That date was still in the future as of October 4, 2026, so the groundbreaking was confirmed but the construction start was not.

What happened at 1034 Front Street

Homeowners and project partners gathered on October 2 for a blessing and ceremonial groundbreaking at Lahaina Residential. The planned rebuild will restore the 60 homes lost in the August 2023 wildfire. Maui Now reported the event and project details on October 3, 2026.

The distinction matters: a groundbreaking marks a project milestone, but it does not by itself confirm that building work has begun. Arita Poulson General Contracting, the project’s general contractor, expected construction to start October 19, 2026. Because that date had not yet arrived when Maui Now’s report was assessed on October 4, it should be treated as a plan, not a verified start.

What the rebuild is planned to include

Six buildings in the original layout

The project is planned to restore six two-story buildings to their original size and layout. The reported scope retains the community’s established configuration while incorporating specified fire-resilience and water-saving features.

Fire-resilient and water-saving features

  • Fire-resistant siding and roofing.
  • Defensible space and fire-safe landscaping.
  • Native plants intended to reduce water use.
  • Low-flow plumbing fixtures.
  • Infrastructure for future electric-vehicle chargers.

These are reported design intentions. The October 3 account does not identify product brands or certifications, or provide measured evidence of how the features perform.

Building beside a historic landmark

The site is in the Lāhainā Historic District, next to the historic U.S. Marine Hospital, also known as Seaman’s Hospital. The project team worked with County historic representatives on exterior materials and design details intended to complement the hospital and the Front Street view corridor. The available account describes that collaboration but does not establish a final design approval or report completed construction.

Who is involved and what the schedule means

Arita Poulson General Contracting is the general contractor. Maui Now also names Michael Wright & Associates Inc., Kasprzycki Designs, Martin & Martin, Island Geotechnical, and Scientific Consultant Services Inc. as project-team participants. The report says Arita Poulson is part of the Goodfellow Brothers family of companies, which had also worked on recovery efforts including banyan-tree rehabilitation, debris removal, temporary housing support, and the temporary King Kamehameha III Elementary School campus.

The contractor’s reported estimate was approximately 18 months of construction. It is a projected duration, not a confirmed completion date; the report does not provide a calendar completion date or later verification of the start. Thomas Ravey, president of the Association of Apartment Owners of Lahaina Residential and a homeowner, said: “Our homeowners have been through a lot over the past three years, and today they can finally see their homes starting to come back.”

Shannon Robinson, controller at Arita Poulson General Contracting, said the work would be guided by “a deep respect for this place and the people who have been waiting to come home.” Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen said: “Every home that is rebuilt in Lāhainā brings a family back to West Maui.”
