Check the bill’s kilowatt-hours (kWh), billing dates, daily usage, utility and rate schedule before judging the total. A matching online discussion included one anonymous reply calling a similar bill “cheap,” but it does not establish what electricians generally think or whether this particular bill is accurate.
Why the dollar amount alone is not enough
An electric bill can rise because a household used more electricity, because the price or other charges changed, or because both happened. A longer billing period can also produce a larger total without indicating a sudden change in daily use. Without the actual bill dates, kWh, provider, rate schedule, season and heating or cooling equipment, there is no reliable way to diagnose this townhouse’s $175 charge.
Start with the utility named on the bill. Dominion Energy’s Virginia rate schedules apply to customers whose service matches those arrangements; Virginia households do not all have the same provider or rate. Dominion’s residential rates page lists its schedules and service arrangements.
Compare the bill with a like-for-like period
Use the bill’s start and end dates, total kWh and average daily use. Compare the same season in the prior year when possible, since weather and seasonal heating or cooling demand can make a month-to-month comparison misleading. Check for usage and rate changes
Look at major electric loads
Once you know whether kWh rose, consider what could explain it. Electric space heating, heat-pump auxiliary or emergency heat, central air conditioning, water heating, clothes drying and EV charging are possible contributors. These are diagnostic possibilities, not established causes for this home; the bill and household details are needed to identify a cause.
Read the charges, not just the total
Review the applicable schedule and itemized charges to see whether the unit price or another component changed. Dominion reports that the average residential bill will see an average increase of $11.24 in 2026 on its Virginia rate information page. That is a utility-reported average impact, not a forecast for this townhouse or proof that its bill should rise by that amount.

A separate historical change should not be casually combined with the 2026 figure: a Virginia General Assembly Division of Legislative Services report dated October 31, 2025, describes an interim Dominion fuel-factor increase with an approximate $8.95 monthly impact for a typical residential customer for usage beginning July 1, 2025. It is a distinct rate event, and the figure does not establish what applies to an individual customer now. See the report (RD716).
What the “cheap” comment does—and does not—show
A Reddit thread posted September 29, 2026 describes a Richmond-area resident in a roughly 1,400-square-foot townhouse reporting bills around $150–$175. One anonymous commenter replied, “That’s cheap.” The thread does not establish that the commenter is an electrician, provide credentials, or represent a professional consensus. It is an anecdote, not a benchmark for Virginia townhouse bills.

When to contact the utility or seek an assessment
- If kWh is sharply different from a comparable period, check the dates and readings shown on the bill and contact the utility with those details.
- If the dates, kWh or meter details appear inconsistent, ask the utility to review the account rather than assuming the dollar total proves a billing error.
- If usage remains high after checking dates, rates and household loads, consider a home energy assessment. Scope, qualifications, price, eligibility and incentives vary; confirm local availability directly before relying on a program or rebate.
A plug-in electricity monitor can help measure compatible plug-in devices, but it cannot measure central HVAC or other hardwired equipment and cannot verify the utility meter. Check the account’s usage history first; a small-device monitor cannot settle whether the whole-home bill is correct.
