A 2001 focus group helped change the first Roomba from a carpet-sweeping robot into a product customers recognized as a vacuum. In original designer Joe Jones’s retrospective account, participants sharply lowered their price estimates when they learned the prototype did not use a vacuum. The engineering team responded by adding a small, low-power vacuum without abandoning the compact design.
What the first Roomba prototype did—and what it lacked
Joe Jones, the original Roomba designer, says the early prototype cleaned hard floors and carpet with a carpet-sweeping mechanism. It did not initially include a vacuum. The machine could clean, but the missing feature mattered because people expected a floor-cleaning product to vacuum.
Jones dates the earliest prototype, called Scamp, to 1999. By midsummer 2001, the team had a working machine to show prospective customers. In his account for IEEE Spectrum, adapted from his book Dancing with Roomba: Cracking the Robot Riddle and Building an Icon, Jones recalls that iRobot paid “maybe” about US $10,000 to arrange the focus groups.
What happened in the 2001 focus groups?
Jones says three groups met, with around two dozen people in total and eight to 10 participants in a group. At first, the facilitator described the machine as an “automatic floor cleaner.” According to Jones, only two participants independently called it a robot.

The pivotal moment came when participants learned how it cleaned: with a carpet sweeper rather than a vacuum. Jones recalls that their average price estimates then fell by about half. He described the response as “The focus group’s brutal revaluation exploded our world.” Those are figures and reactions from Jones’s later account, not results independently verified by published transcripts or a formal study report.
The drop posed a direct product problem. Jones wrote, “If we were forced to cut the robot’s price in half, we would lose money on every unit sold, and there would be no Roomba.” The lesson, as the engineering team understood it, was that customers did not merely want a device that cleaned floors: they expected it to vacuum.

Why adding a vacuum was an engineering challenge
A conventional vacuum could demand more power and space than the small robot could spare. Jones says the overall power budget was about 30 watts and the team targeted roughly 3 watts for the added vacuum. The machine also had to stay compact enough to pass between chair legs and clean beneath furniture.
Rather than replace the sweeper with a larger, more power-hungry vacuum, the team designed a narrow-inlet, low-power vacuum to work alongside it. In Jones’s description, the small vacuum improved pickup on hard floors while the sweeper continued to do much of the work on carpet. This is his account of the design trade-off, not a comparison of modern robot-vacuum performance.

How Winston Tao used the focus groups
Jones later learned that iRobot vice president Winston Tao had partly arranged the exercise to make a point to the engineers: the prototype was missing something customers needed to recognize it as a vacuuming product. Jones recalled Tao’s conclusion at the end of the session: “Roomba has to have a vacuum.”
That detail makes the episode more than a story about an unexpected customer preference. In Jones’s telling, Tao used the groups to make the product’s omission visible to a team that had focused on the cleaning mechanism it had built. The available account does not include independent confirmation of Tao’s intent, so this should be understood as Jones’s retrospective recollection.

- CLEAN FLOORS EVERY DAY—WITHOUT THINKING ABOUT IT. The Roomba Plus 415X vacuums and mops in one run, stopping crumbs, dust, and spills before they turn into stuck‑on messes. With 20,000 Pa and DualClean mop pads, your floors stay visibly clean from morning and night.
- NO MORE SCRUBBING DRIED‑ON MESSES. SmartScrub applies extra pressure exactly where messes are stubborn—breaking down dried food, muddy paw prints, and kitchen splatter, so you never have to scrub by hand again.
- REACHES THE PLACES DIRT USUALLY HIDES. A 46% slimmer design* fits under more furniture, while extending brushes pull debris from edges and corners—so dust doesn’t collect where traditional robots miss. *Compared to Roomba 105
- GREAT FOR HOMES WITH PETS. Tangle‑free rubber brushes capture pet fur without clogging, eliminating constant stops to cut hair off the brush.
- EVERY CLEAN STARTS WITH A FRESH MOP—NOT YESTERDAY’S DIRT. The AutoWash Dock washes and heat‑dries mop pads at 113°F after every run, preventing odors and buildup so floors aren’t cleaned with yesterday’s dirt.
From prototype to Roomba’s 2002 launch
Jones says iRobot released the first production Roomba in September 2002. The company’s 2010 anniversary release also identifies 2002 as the launch year. That release says iRobot was founded in 1990 by MIT roboticists Colin Angle and Helen Greiner with their professor Rodney Brooks, and reports that the company had sold more than five million home robots worldwide by March 2010. That sales figure is a company-reported total as of that date, not a current figure.
The focus-group story is documented in Jones’s retrospective account; iRobot’s company history supports the broader product timeline but does not verify the focus-group details.
