In April 2022, Insteon abruptly shut down its cloud service, breaking app access, remote control and voice-assistant integrations that depended on the company’s servers. That did not necessarily brick every Insteon device: devices with working local links or manually programmed scenes could continue to operate. Insteon later said a new group had acquired the company and was restoring service.
What happened when Insteon’s servers went offline?
In mid-April 2022, Insteon turned off its cloud service without advance warning to customers. The immediate impact was loss of cloud-dependent features, including app login and control, remote access and voice-assistant integrations. Home Assistant founder Paulus Schoutsen reported on April 19, 2022, that users could no longer control or configure their hubs through those cloud-dependent paths and that automations relying on them would not run.
On June 9, 2022, Insteon CEO Ken Fairbanks said a new group had acquired the company and was prioritizing getting hubs back online. The company’s subsequent path included rebuilding its app and restoring services. No authoritative published figure establishes how many customers, homes or devices were affected.
Were Insteon devices actually bricked?
“Bricked” suggests a device has become unusable. That is too broad a description of the outage. The failure was in the cloud service and the functions that relied on it; it did not automatically erase a device’s ability to communicate locally.

Whether a particular setup continued to work depended on how it had been configured. Local device links and manually programmed scenes could survive. Conversely, cloud-dependent app control, remote access, voice integrations and automations could fail when the servers were unavailable. A working switch or scene therefore did not mean the cloud service was still available, and a broken app did not prove that every device was dead.
What can still work locally?
- Direct operation and local links: Devices linked to one another may continue to communicate without the cloud, depending on their configuration.
- Manually created scenes: Insteon documents manual device linking and scene creation without Hub and Connected Home Access. It also documents configuring virtual three-way circuits, ramp rates and on-levels this way.
- Third-party local control: Home Assistant’s Insteon integration supports Hub models 2242 and 2245, as well as supported USB or serial PowerLinc Modems. Its integration does not require the Insteon app and can communicate locally.
These capabilities are not equivalent to restoring every cloud feature. In particular, local control does not by itself restore vendor-managed remote access or the original voice-assistant route.

How to approach an offline Insteon system
- Check what has failed. Separate local operation from cloud-dependent functions: test whether a device responds directly or through an existing local scene, then note whether the app, remote access or voice assistant is the part that stopped working.
- Do not factory-reset an offline Hub 2 as a first step. Insteon warns that a reset can remove device links, scenes and schedules. If the hub cannot reconnect, erasing that configuration can make recovery harder.
- Choose a control path before changing configuration. If you want Insteon’s app and managed remote features, use the official Hub 2 and Connected Home Access route. If you want local control through Home Assistant, first confirm that your hub or PowerLinc Modem is a supported model.
- For a Home Assistant setup, keep the hub and controller on the local network. Home Assistant documents local Insteon integration, and Insteon documents a Home Assistant bridge to Apple HomeKit when Home Assistant and the Insteon Hub are on the same local network.
Official cloud service or local control?

Insteon’s Director documentation describes a rebuilt app and added support for additional legacy products. Firmware notes dated January 29, 2025 describe improved stability when Hub 2 is used as an Insteon modem with third-party controllers such as Home Assistant.

Insteon’s current service offering is not a guarantee that a vendor-operated cloud will always be available. The 2022 shutdown demonstrated that cloud-dependent functions can stop when the service is unavailable, even when devices themselves remain capable of local communication. Owners deciding how to configure a system should distinguish features that need Insteon’s servers from those that can run through local links or a local controller.

For an existing installation, compatibility and product availability vary by model. Insteon switches, keypads, sensors, plugs and outlets may be relevant when extending a system, but the brand name alone does not establish compatibility with every hub or controller.
