Matter is the smart-home interoperability protocol; it is not a radio. A Matter product uses a network technology such as Wi-Fi, Thread, or Ethernet to communicate, while Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) often helps a phone or controller commission the product. Wireless combo chips bring some of the radio and computing capabilities a device needs into one platform, but the chip alone does not make a product Matter-compatible.
What Matter doesโand what the radios do
Matter standardizes how compatible smart-home devices communicate across platforms. It uses IP networking rather than defining one universal wireless connection. Wi-Fi and Thread are separate network paths for Matter devices; Ethernet is another option identified in Nordicโs documentation. Bluetooth LE commonly serves a different role: helping a phone or controller securely set up a device and provide network credentials. See Texas Instrumentsโ Matter overview and Nordicโs Matter overview.
- Wi-Fi: an IP network option used by many connected products.
- Thread: a low-power IP networking option aimed at connected devices.
- Ethernet: a wired IP connection; a device connected to the operational network may already be reachable without wireless commissioning.
- Bluetooth LE: commonly used during commissioning, rather than as the deviceโs normal Matter network path.
That distinction matters when reading a chip specification: a product can include Bluetooth LE for setup and use Wi-Fi or Thread for its ongoing network traffic.
What a wireless combo chip contributes
A combo chip or module may combine radio functions with computing resources for a productโs chosen network transport and setup flow. The precise combination varies by platform. Some designs pair a host processor with a separate Wi-Fi companion IC; others select a system-on-chip with the required radio hardware. A Thread border router, for example, needs a way to bridge Thread devices to another network, and Espressif describes a configuration combining an ESP32-H with a Wi-Fi SoC for that purpose.

The addition of a USB-C port allows for mini-UPS and power bank connections, delivering unparalleled stability. (2A USB power adapter is not included. ) . Note: To ensure a stable connection, place the Hub M3 between 6 to 19 feet from the router.
- [Privacy-Focused with Encrypted Storage, Easy Setup and Versatile Placement] The M3 prioritizes privacy by excluding microphone or camera components. It boasts 8GB end-to-end encrypted local storage, for device lists, configuration parameters, and automation configuration data. Additionally, it includes a mount and screws for flexible placement on flat surfaces, walls, or ceilings. Magic Pair technology ensures effortless detection by the Aqara Home app upon power-up.
Hardware is only one part of a working Matter product. The device also needs a suitable protocol stack, a correct implementation for its device type, integration with the application, and a path through applicable testing and certification. Vendor development platforms bundle or support parts of that work; choosing a chip is not a substitute for verifying the complete product.

How to choose a chip or development board
Start with the productโs intended network path, then work through the rest of the design. Vendor pages show different platform approaches, but they do not establish a neutral ranking for speed, range, power consumption, or overall value.
- Choose the operational transport. Decide whether the product will use Wi-Fi, Thread, or Ethernet. A low-power sensor and a mains-powered device may have different network priorities.
- Plan commissioning. For a Wi-Fi or Thread product, check whether the intended setup flow uses Bluetooth LE and whether the board includes the required radio and software support. A cabled Ethernet device may already be on the network.
- Size compute and memory. Allow for the Matter stack, the application, and other firmware. Check the selected deviceโs resources and documented software requirements rather than assuming that any radio-capable chip has enough capacity.
- Account for integration. Review antenna and radio design, host/companion-chip connections, board layout, and the effort needed to adapt a development kit to production hardware.
- Assess the software path. Compare SDK documentation, examples, supported transports, and maintenance for the exact chip and board revision.
- Map certification and product testing. Confirm current requirements for the device category and planned product, and verify the applicable certification path before committing to a design.
What does โchips that support Matterโ mean?
It means the vendor documents a chip or platform for a Matter implementation over a supported transport, typically alongside a software stack or development environment. It does not mean that every part bearing the same family name supports every Matter transport or that a finished product is automatically certified. Check the specific product documentation and certification status.
