The key is even coverage—especially over the mitt area—and careful shaping as the felt shrinks. A handmade wet-felted mitt has no established heat rating in the sources reviewed here, so do not assume it is safe for handling hot cookware.
Choose the construction method first
Direct wet-felting starts with loose wool arranged around a resist or hand form. A different method is to knit a mitt and then felt the knitting in a washing machine. These are not interchangeable: the wool layout, tools, felting action, and sizing process differ.
| Method | Starting form | How it felts | What shapes the result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct wet-felting | Loose carded wool or roving arranged around a resist or form | Hand rubbing and rolling with water and soap | Fiber layout and hand fulling |
| Knitted, then machine-felted | A knitted mitt made to a pattern | Washing-machine agitation and heat | Pattern gauge, machine behavior, and reshaping after washing |
Novita’s Knitted and Felted Oven Mitts Novita Natura pattern describes the second route, including a 40°C wash program. Those machine-washing directions are not steps for direct wet-felting. Novita also notes that machines felt wool differently, so the result can vary.
Materials and tools for direct wet-felting
- Felting wool: The dedicated double-oven-glove method by felt artist Lamorna Thomas uses carded Bergschaf; a separate glove tutorial uses merino roving. Use wool intended for felting, not an assumed substitute yarn.
- A resist or form: A resist establishes the mitt shape while wool is laid around it. The cited double-glove method uses cut resist shapes; the glove tutorial works over hand forms.
- Soapy water: Sally Bea’s glove tutorial uses hot water mixed with dishwashing liquid or grated olive soap.
- Optional handling and rolling aids: Bubble wrap can be used for rubbing or rolling. Thomas’s method uses a bamboo blind to roll the work; curtain netting or cotton scrim/muslin can help manage or structure the fibers.
- Useful tools: Sharp scissors and a tape measure are included in Thomas’s project tools.
Thomas lists about 125 g of grey carded Bergschaf and about 55 g of contrast Bergschaf for her particular double-glove design. Those amounts belong to that design; they are not a universal materials allowance for every mitt.

How to wet-felt the mitt
The steps below summarize the cited direct wet-felting methods. For a complete double-glove layout and construction sequence, use Lamorna Thomas’s “Tips & Techniques: Bergschaf Oven Gloves” in the International Feltmakers Association’s Felt Matters (2020).
- Prepare the resist and wool. Set out the mitt-shaped resist and separate wool into manageable sections. Lay the fibers in consistent, overlapping layers so there are no uncovered gaps.
- Build even coverage. Thomas adds extra Bergschaf layers over the mitt portions. Check for thin places before wetting; the dedicated oven-glove article particularly emphasizes inspecting the mitt areas.
- Wet the layout. Apply soapy water to the fibers. Begin rubbing gently so the laid-out wool does not shift. Curtain netting can help hold fibers in place during early handling.
- Rub and roll progressively. Continue working the surface, using bubble wrap or a bamboo blind as appropriate to the method. Vary the rolling directions and check that fibers are migrating and bonding rather than remaining loose.
- Check seams and shape. Smooth wrinkles and uneven patches as the felt develops. The double-glove method strengthens the seams after removing the resists; continue checking for weak or thin spots.
- Rinse and finish. Rinse thoroughly, shape the felt, and press out excess water with a towel. Dry it flat with the mitt portions open.
Thomas estimates about six hours for her specific double-glove project. That is a project-specific estimate, not a guaranteed completion time for other shapes, wool amounts, or makers.

Plan for size variation
With direct wet-felting, size depends on the dimensions of the resist and how much the wool is worked during fulling. The reviewed sources do not establish a dependable shrinkage percentage, so avoid sizing a project by applying a fixed percentage to the resist. Check the shape as the fibers bind and full the felt gradually; allow for the possibility that the finished dimensions will differ from the target.
The knitted route offers a pattern gauge before felting, but machine results still vary. Novita advises reshaping after washing, rather than treating the pattern’s pre-felting measurements as a guarantee of final fit.

What the heat-safety evidence does—and does not—show
Thomas describes the thicker Bergschaf layers over the mitt portions as providing heat resistance, but the article does not report a controlled thermal test or certification. The other cited wet-felting tutorial is about fingered gloves, not oven-mitt performance. The reviewed sources therefore do not establish a tested temperature rating for a handmade wet-felted mitt.
Herding Textiles’ 2023 consumer instructions state that its specified oven glove or potholder is designed for contact heat up to 250°C for a maximum of 15 seconds in domestic kitchen use. That figure applies to the manufacturer’s product, not to handmade felted mitts. Do not transfer it to a homemade item or assume that a thicker-looking felt layer makes one safe for prolonged contact with hot cookware.
