How to Use DIY Neem Oil Without Harming Bees

Reduce bee exposure when using neem oil: identify the pest, read the exact product label, avoid blooming flowers and active pollinator visits, and never assume one product’s recipe applies to another.

You cannot guarantee that a neem-oil spray is harmless to bees. To reduce risk, identify the pest first, follow the directions and bee warnings on the exact product you own, and do not spray blooming flowers or plants bees are visiting. Neem formulations have different labels and recipes, so a generic DIY mix is not a safe substitute.

Can you use neem oil without harming bees?

You can take steps to reduce exposure, but you should not call neem oil universally bee-safe. The U.S. EPA-accepted Neem Oil 70% label warns: “This product is toxic to bees exposed to direct treatment. Do not apply this product while bees are actively visiting the treatment area.” Read the warning on your own container; formulations and approved uses differ.

An EPA assessment of cold-pressed neem oil says nectar-feeding honey bees and other pollinators are unlikely to consume enough of that assessed formulation to cause adverse effects when it is used according to EPA-approved label directions. The same assessment notes that insects feeding on treated foliage or roots may be directly exposed at pesticidal levels. That finding is specific to the assessed cold-pressed oil and approved uses; it does not cancel a product label’s warning about direct spray exposure or establish that every neem product is harmless to pollinators. Read EPA’s cold-pressed neem oil assessment.

What to check before mixing or spraying

  1. Identify the problem. Confirm the pest or disease before treating. EPA recommends considering ways to manage the problem without pesticides and, if pesticide use is needed, choosing a product labeled for the identified pest and site. EPA garden guidance on pollinators and pesticides.
  2. Read the label on the actual container. Check that the plant or site and target pest are included, then follow that label’s mixing rate, application interval, timing, bee precautions, and plant-sensitivity warnings. In the United States, the Neem Oil 70% label states that using the product contrary to its labeling violates federal law.
  3. Keep spray off flowers and visiting pollinators. Do not spray blooming flowers or any area where bees or other pollinators are present. EPA also advises avoiding periods when bees are likely to fly and avoiding windy conditions. Its general guidance describes early evening as a good time so pesticide can dry overnight, but that does not override a product-specific label restriction. EPA’s garden pollinator guidance.
  4. Check plant condition and weather. The Neem Oil 70% label cautions against use on wilted or stressed plants and recently transplanted plants whose roots are not established. It recommends testing sensitive plants and small areas first because leaf burn is possible. It also advises applying in calm weather, with no rain forecast for the next 24 hours, and avoiding drift, direct water application, and runoff into drains or surface waters. Follow the label for the product you have.

Why there is no universal DIY neem recipe

Neem Oil 70% and Pure Neem Oil are different labeled products; their directions should not be mixed and matched. The following measurements are examples from the U.S. EPA-accepted Pure Neem Oil label accepted May 30, 2023, not a recipe for other neem oils or brands.

How to choose between neem products

Do not judge bee safety by the words “neem oil” alone. Compare the exact formulation and concentration, labeled plants and pests, ready-to-use or concentrate form, bee-hazard language, mixing directions, application timing and repeat interval, plant precautions, and runoff instructions. Use the label for the product in hand; an EPA assessment of one formulation is not a substitute for that label.
