There is no uncontested, universal winner. ForestSource’s chart of 552 species ranks waddywood (Acacia peuce) first at 20,595 N (4,630 lbf), while a USDA Forest Products Laboratory publication identifies lignum vitae as the hardest among trade woods, at 4,500 Janka. Those rankings have different scopes, so the most accurate answer depends on which list and measurement you mean.
Which wood ranks hardest?
ForestSource’s live chart, accessed October 4, 2026, places waddywood first among its 552 listed species. Its figures for the top three are:
| Rank on ForestSource chart | Wood | Reported Janka hardness |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Waddywood (Acacia peuce) | 20,595 N (4,630 lbf) |
| 2 | Boonaree | 20,284 N (4,560 lbf) |
| 3 | Lignum vitae | 20,017 N (4,500 lbf) |
These are rankings in ForestSource’s chart, not a verified census of every wood species worldwide. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory’s 2013 publication gives a different, narrower answer: lignum vitae ranks highest among trade woods, at 4,500 Janka. The two claims are compatible because one chart covers 552 species and the other refers to trade woods; neither establishes an exhaustive world record. See ForestSource’s Janka hardness chart and the USDA Forest Products Laboratory publication.
Is Australian buloke the hardest wood?
Australian buloke (Allocasuarina luehmannii) is often associated with the hardest-wood claim, but the references reviewed do not agree on its Janka value:

| Source | Reported value | What the figure establishes |
|---|---|---|
| ForestSource, accessed October 4, 2026 | 3,760 lbf | Its species database’s listed value for Australian buloke |
| The Wood Database, accessed October 4, 2026 | 3,760 lbf (16,740 N) | Its listed Janka hardness for Australian buloke |
| Bahco Academy table, accessed October 4, 2026 | 5,600 lbf | A conflicting table value; the source does not resolve the discrepancy |
The two 3,760 lbf listings agree, while Bahco’s 5,600 lbf figure is substantially higher. The available sources do not explain why they differ, so it would be misleading to present the higher number as settled or to use these figures as if they were directly comparable measurements. Consult the ForestSource hardwood species database, The Wood Database’s Australian buloke entry, and the Bahco Academy Janka table for each source’s entry.
What does Janka hardness measure?
Janka is a resistance-to-indentation test: it measures the force needed to press a steel ball halfway into a wood sample. It describes hardness under that test, not every aspect of strength, toughness, wear resistance, or durability. A USDA Forest Products Laboratory publication specifies a 1.11 cm (0.444 in.) ball for the method it discusses. Separately, ISO 13061-12:2017 describes a static-hardness method in which a plunger is pressed into wood under a gradually increasing load. A figure is meaningful only in context of its test method and reported units. See the ISO 13061-12:2017 standard.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
Why can hardness figures differ?
Test method and orientation
Wood hardness results depend on how the test is conducted and which direction or surface is tested. A value should not be assumed equivalent to another unless the method and orientation are comparable. The cited tables do not consistently provide enough detail to verify that every listed figure comes from identical testing.
Moisture condition
Moisture also affects comparisons. A USDA Forest Service research summary notes that the relationship between specific gravity and Janka side hardness differs for green wood and wood at 12% moisture content. The chart sources do not consistently state moisture conditions for every species, so their rankings should not be read as perfectly controlled, like-for-like tests. See the USDA Forest Service summary on estimating Janka hardness.

Different lists answer different questions
A broad species chart, a list of commercially traded woods, and an individual species entry are not the same kind of ranking. ForestSource’s first-place result applies to its 552-species chart; the USDA publication’s lignum vitae claim is specifically about trade woods. Neither source establishes that every species worldwide has been tested under one uniform protocol.

How to read a “hardest wood” claim
- Check whether the claim names a test such as Janka and gives units.
- Look for the ranking’s scope: a named chart or trade-wood list is not a complete world survey.
- Compare test method, orientation, and specimen moisture condition when those details are available.
- Treat disputed figures, such as the Australian buloke values, as source-specific unless the discrepancy is resolved.
