How to clean up a bark wound
The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) recommends removing loose bark and carefully cutting away jagged edges with a sharp knife. Its construction-damage guidance cautions, “Be sure not to cut living tissues.” ISA, Treatment of Trees Damaged by Construction (2021)
- Remove bark only where it has already come loose.
- Trim ragged edges cautiously; do not enlarge the wound to make it look even or oval.
- Leave attached, healthy bark in place, and stop if cleanup would require cutting into living tissue.
This is limited cleanup, not a repair that restores missing bark. The right response depends on the injury and tree; ISA’s guidance does not establish a universal wound-size threshold, closure timeline, or recovery probability.
Should you paint or seal a tree wound?
No—not as routine treatment. ISA says wound dressings do not reduce decay or speed wound closure and rarely prevent insect or disease infestations; most experts recommend against using them. ISA, Treatment of Trees Damaged by Construction (2021)

The brochure notes a narrow cosmetic exception: if a dressing must be used for appearance, use only a thin coating of a nontoxic material. That does not make paint a healing treatment or a substitute for an assessment when damage is serious.
Which wounds need an arborist?

ISA recommends consulting an ISA Certified Arborist if tree health or structural integrity is a concern. You can find an ISA Certified Arborist through ISA’s tree-owner resources. When choosing a provider, verify the credential and ask what the inspection covers and what treatment is recommended.

Care for the tree after the injury
Water the root zone, not just the trunk
Provide adequate—but not excessive—water, especially during dry summer months. ISA recommends a long, slow soak across the root zone rather than frequent shallow watering, and advises correcting poor drainage because trees can decline rapidly in those conditions. Mulch the root area appropriately
ISA recommends 2–4 inches of organic mulch over the root system, extending it as far from the trunk as practical. Keep mulch from piling against the trunk. ISA, Treatment of Trees Damaged by Construction (2021)

Watch for changes over time
Decline may take years to become readily visible. Look for smaller or fewer leaves, crown dieback, premature fall color, and worsening structural defects. A trunk wound can occur alongside construction-related root severance, soil compaction, or changes to grade and drainage; trimming bark does not address those underlying problems. Do not try to remove large or overhead limbs yourself. ISA warns that pruning large trees can be dangerous and recommends professional help for work above ground or involving power equipment. If pruning timing is uncertain, ask a local arborist: some diseases can spread when susceptible trees are pruned during active transmission periods. ISA, Pruning Mature Trees (2021)
