How to Stop a Toilet From Running: Diagnose the Flapper, Fill Valve, and Float

Find out whether a running toilet is caused by a leaking flapper or canister seal, a high or sticking float, or a fill valve that will not shut off—and what to check before replacing parts.

A running toilet usually has one of two problems: water is escaping from the tank past the flapper or canister seal, or the tank is filling high enough to send water down the overflow tube. Remove the tank lid and watch a complete refill before buying parts. That observation—and a couple of simple tests—can help distinguish a seal problem from a float or fill-valve problem.

Start with a safe inspection

  1. Find the shutoff. Locate the valve on the water supply line near the toilet, and make sure you know where the home’s main shutoff is. You can inspect the tank with the local supply on, but turn it off before taking components apart. If the valve is wet, corroded, or will not close, do not force it; use the main shutoff if appropriate or get plumbing help. Moen cautions against over-tightening a multi-turn angle stop.
  2. Remove the tank lid carefully. Set it somewhere stable where it will not be knocked or chipped. Watch the water level and listen after a flush; note whether water is flowing into the overflow tube or leaking into the bowl.
  3. Flush once and observe the refill. Wait for the tank to stop filling. If it starts again on its own, look for water escaping into the bowl between refill cycles.

A little water remains in the tank after shutting off the supply and flushing. Keep a towel or bucket nearby, and sponge out remaining water if a repair requires a mostly empty tank.

Is water leaking past the flapper or canister seal?

If the toilet refills intermittently even though no one has flushed, water may be seeping from the tank into the bowl. As the tank level drops, the fill valve turns on to replace it. Inspect the flapper or canister seal for misalignment, visible wear, deposits, or anything caught between the seal and its seat.

Try a reseating test

With the tank open, press the flapper gently onto its seat or reseat the canister, as appropriate for your toilet. Watch whether the running stops. If it does, the seal may not have been closing properly; the test helps identify the likely area but is not proof that a replacement is always needed. Kohler describes this approach in its running-toilet repair guide, and Moen explains that a poor seal can let water pass and trigger refilling in its flapper replacement guide.

Check the handle and chain before replacing the seal

A chain that is tangled, too taut, or caught can hold a flapper partly open. A trip lever that binds can have the same effect. Make sure the handle returns freely and the chain has enough slack for the flapper to close, without so much slack that it catches underneath. Also inspect the flapper’s alignment and the sealing surface for deposits. Kohler’s repair guidance and support information cover these possible causes.

Is the tank overfilling through the overflow tube?

If water reaches the top of the overflow tube or runs into it while the tank fills, the water level may be set too high, the float may be sticking, or the fill valve may not be shutting off correctly. The overflow carries excess tank water into the bowl, so water entering it can keep the toilet running even when the flapper seals.

Check float movement and water level

Watch the float as the tank fills. It should move freely and stop the incoming water before the tank overflows. Look for contact with the tank wall or another component. If the float is set too high and your valve allows adjustment, lower it using that valve’s adjustment mechanism and follow the toilet or valve maker’s directions.

Delta’s running-toilet tips give a target water level of one-half to one inch below the top of the overflow tube. Treat that as Delta’s guidance, not a universal setting: the instructions for your toilet or fill valve take precedence if they specify a different level.

Lift the float to test the fill valve

While water is entering the tank, gently lift the float by hand. If the fill valve stops admitting water, the float setting or movement may be the issue. If water continues to flow despite the float being raised, the valve may need cleaning or replacement. This hand-lift check is a diagnostic test, not a guarantee; follow the instructions for the installed valve. Kohler describes the test in its repair guide, while Fluidmaster’s installation instructions provide valve-specific troubleshooting.

Check the refill tube and other simple causes

The small refill tube should be positioned according to the fill-valve maker’s instructions. Incorrect placement can interfere with proper operation. Sediment may also affect a valve’s movement or sealing. Check the tube’s routing and look for visible debris before assuming the valve itself has failed; use model-specific guidance for any cleaning or adjustment. Fluidmaster’s instructions address refill-tube placement and chain slack, and Kohler’s support page covers common running-toilet causes.

Choose a repair based on what the tests show

What you observe Likely area to inspect Next step
The toilet refills intermittently; water appears to escape into the bowl Flapper or canister seal, chain, or trip lever Check alignment, wear, deposits, chain slack, and handle movement; try reseating the seal.
Water rises into or spills into the overflow tube Float setting or movement; fill valve shutoff Check for binding, adjust the water level according to the valve maker’s instructions, and try the float-lift test.
Water continues entering when the float is lifted Fill valve Follow the valve maker’s troubleshooting steps; cleaning or replacement may be needed.

Replace only the component implicated by the checks. If the seal test points to the flapper or canister, identify the toilet model and match the replacement to its flush-valve design. Flappers attach in different ways, and a part described as universal may not fit every toilet. Moen’s replacement guidance and Kohler’s model-support information explain why matching the existing design matters.

Replace a flapper or fill valve safely

For a flapper replacement

  1. Turn off the toilet’s supply valve and flush to lower the tank water. Sponge out what remains if needed.
  2. Unhook the chain and remove the old flapper according to its attachment style; designs vary.
  3. Fit a replacement compatible with the toilet model and flush-valve design. Reconnect the chain with enough slack for the seal to close fully.
  4. Turn the supply back on and observe a complete refill and shutoff. Confirm that the flapper seals and that water does not spill into the overflow.

For a fill-valve replacement

  1. Turn off the supply and flush to lower the tank water. Keep towels or a bucket ready for remaining water.
  2. Install the replacement according to its package instructions. Reconnect the supply carefully and position the refill tube as directed by the valve maker.
  3. Set the water level using the valve’s adjustment mechanism and its model-specific instructions.
  4. Restore the water supply and watch the whole refill cycle. Confirm that the valve shuts off, the flapper seals, and water stays below the overflow opening.

If the shutoff valve will not close safely, or you are unsure how to identify or install a compatible part, stop and get appropriate plumbing help. Kohler notes that repairing or replacing individual parts is usually the quickest and most cost-effective way to address a running toilet; that is manufacturer guidance, not a guarantee for every toilet or repair.
